LFG Alabama

Soo... I am sick of not having anyone to play board games with and the local Meet-up group meets too far away and at bad times for me. Sooo....

I want to find a few like-minded gamers to have semi-regular tabletop sessions with. My schedule changes a lot which makes it difficult, and I moved to this area and have yet to find where my kind (nerds) congregate.

I live and can host in Muscle Shoals (NW Alabama) and I work in Decatur (N Central AL). Either location is doable, and I might even go to Madison or Huntsville if I find good people interested who can fit my random schedule.

I have almost no experience at this kind of thing unless you count poker nights in college so advice is welcome. I was hoping to find people who would play games from D&D to Settlers of Catan. Preferably relaxed easy going types as I consider myself to be.

I did not use meet-up for this as it is a little too public from my past experience and I would prefer the "sane" people from this community to be the core of the group.

Manta173's Games:
Settlers of Catan, Last Night on Earth, Dixit, Lords of Waterdeep, Poker set

You should post on boardgamegeek.

Well crap, I didn't think about that.

I never spend time on that site so I don't know what the community it like. Is it similar to GWJ? I like the mentality here.

It has about the same arsehole-to-angel ratio. Of course it's not quite the same thing, but I've never been sworn at or attacked there, as I have on other fora. Check out the state/county specific sections and see if there are groups near you.

Ok started basically the same thread over at BGG.

I'll still keep checking this one if any of you are interested though.

We might be able to arrange something in the Huntsville area between Stilgar Black and myself. I've also entertained the idea of driving up to the Nashville area if we could put together a S&T event up there with trichy & co.

My tiny apartment probably couldn't host more than 5 or 6 at the absolute most, but that number is adequate for most games. I only have a few games myself (7 Wonders, Carcassone +exps, and Dominion) but I have access to lots more through a few friends.

I am not opposed to going to Nashville, but it would definitely be at a lower frequency. As for Huntsville, due to the drive home required (>1 hour) we will have to have good planning and end at a reasonable time.

I have Catan, Last Night on Earth, Dixit, Lords of Waterdeep and a decent set of poker chips. Also planning on getting some for Christmas from the family.

My house can hold a fair number, but we don't have much table space.. so 6 is probably the limit for 1 game. Also we have 4 dogs of decent size in case anyone has an issue with that... They are VERY friendly.

Man, the one time I see other guys on here from Alabama and you're about 3 hours away. I live about 40 minutes south of Birmingham.

I'm not opposed to a meeting in that direction if we can find a central location. Even if it's only possible a few times a year. Still better than where I'm at now forcing family to play games that they aren't interested in.

If it weren't for our 2 year old, I'd definitely be interested... Don't think it would work logistically for us now though.

I've got extended family in Huntsville, I'll totally post a thread next time we go down there.

See I'm child free for at least the next year or two before the wife and I want kids. So I'm running out of time lol.

Thanks!!

Ah, yes. I'm all for helping get a session or two going. Being on the western side of Huntsville, I may be a bit closer to you and I've got access to a clubhouse that could host a good lot of us. Trips to Nashville or B'ham are generally fine by me if the family obligations allow. I've got like 30 games as well. However, I'm pretty busy until the new year, so any real help in plans. If there is still interest then, let's do it.

I can wait until the new year if its easier...a little busy during this month except for the weekend of Dec 8th anyways. So it seems like I am the odd one out being in Muscle Shoals so I will drive to whatever location.

Do we want to keep the conversation here or is it better for me to set up a google group or something similar?

Here works best for me, as I've got enough locations to check already. I will bow to the will of the group however.

Yeah, unless someone has a good argument for elsewhere, this thread seems just fine. January sounds like a good time frame, too.

Eh, keep it here. It's what this place was made for after all.

Ok, here it stays.

Everything I'm about to say is 100% negotiable.

I figure we need to designate someone to be the guy pushing for us to play on a regular basis. In the past it seems if someone is in charge of coordinating then meet-ups are more regular. I don't mean tell someone screw the familly renuinion and come play, more like Skyrim will be there tomorrow come over tonight. I can be that guy or someone else can if they want.

I think we need a couple more people to round out the group since I assume not all of us will make it to all game nights and 4 or 5 people make for a more interesting game than 2 most of the time. I know 1 or 2 people who might be interested, but scheduling may be difficult and no one I know has done anything like DM so if we go the D&D route I can't help much. Basically if you know someone not on the forums who would be interested... great, sign them up.

For our first meeting I assume we would want to get something simple and quick or a few simple and quick games to get the ball rolling and we can get to more complicated time consuming games after we get all the other details with scheduling and introductions and what not out of the way.

I put the games I can bring in the OP, and I will gladly add to the list if anyone else wants me to volunteer their games let me know. Or if you have a list of games you want to play I could add that too.

I don't know if my post comes off as undesirable in some way, but I have no responses on board game geek.

I have this constant fear that everyone on forums dislikes me... lol.. insecurities on the internet... how novel.

So anyone have a specific time in Januaray they want to meet or is it too soon to plan dates?

I wouldn't jump to conclusions, as tone is very hard to set and read on forums. At least for me.

I'm still up for this, but don't have a specific date to throw out yet, with holiday turmoil and everything, but I'm guessing the 2nd or 3rd weekend in January. Here's a list of games I can bring.

Wow quite a list. Is there anything on there you have been wanting to try? I have more than a few I would be interested in, but will gladly let someone else pick first if anyone has a preference or suggestion.

I think my wife is working the third weekend so that would be better for me as she is not a gamer in any sense of the word... unless dominoes counts...

Back from Christmas and will be free this weekend and New Years Eve if anyone is up for anything.

Otherwise third weekend of January is still the best for me.

So I could host on Saturday, Jan 19th in Madison, AL (just west of Huntsville). I usually start these things around 6 or so, but if people are coming in from far away, we could adjust that. Speak up if you're interested.

That works for me. Of course, I'm probably the closest to Madison and the most flexible.

I'd rather start earlier than later as my wife gets off work at 9 on weekends, but if I leave by 10ish I should be good. So 6 is good for me.

The date is also good. I volunteer to bring snacks and drinks. If anyone wants something specific let me know as I'll probably just swing by the store on my way there. Could also probably use a recommendation for snacks that don't get your hands dirty.

Sounds good. I'll PM you the details next week. Anyone other Goodjers are welcome to come, and I'll probably invite some local game folk to fill in the ranks. If anyone is coming further out than casa de Manta, speak up so we can accommodate you.

I'm also willing to pick up people on the way... although I think I'm the only one out in my direction.

It's probably worth mentioning that I have the kickstarter alpha of JS Joust with 6 PS move controllers. I can bring it along if there's enough space for it.

I would love to give JS Joust a try.

That does bring up the question of what our agenda might be. I can gladly bring all the games that I have as it is only a few.

Does anyone have something specific they want to try/do? I'm quite happy to just wing it if not.

Definitely bring JS Joust. I love that game! And thanks for offering to bring snacks, manta.

Do you guys mind PM your email? I'll shoot an email out tonight with details of place, time, etc. If it's cool with you, I'm going to invite some regulars from my gaming group so we'll have good gaming quorum.

Sent. I'm all for adding others as long as someone vouches for them not being nuts.
