Far Cry 3

Perfect - thanks!

I'm not expecting the looks to match what I'm seeing from RPS video previews or what have you. While I would appreciate that dazzle, I just can't get up the gumption to maintain a PC gaming rig.

Ugh... I need to stop torturing myself by coming to this thread. I swear I've had all my questions answered already but I still keep coming back and going "Hmm should I pick up this game?" And sadly while a little voice says yes in the back of my head the voice I listen to shouts no. Or well "wait a few weeks and pick it up on sale."

Even more of a no now that there are snakes in it. I can deal with violence, I can deal with gore, I can deal with uncomfortably bad sexual content, but snakes? There is a reason I recently decided it isn't a fear but a phobia. Heck I saw the image above and started moving my feet to where they might be safe from any snakes on the ground even though there aren't any.

Here's an odd question but, can I play the game and have snakes removed? Just wondering if there is an option, if not I'll wait a few weeks and see if there is a mod like the spider replacement mod for Skyrim.

If it makes you feel any better, I totally shot that snake in the head with the sniper rifle about 2 seconds after that screenshot. And yes, that's probably the third snake I've seen too. About 50 tigers, a bazillion sharks and 1 crocodile. Yet, I'm happier to walk through the jungle with the 50 tigers than risk going through the water where the crocodiles might get me. Don't care about sharks. I punch those for breakfast.

Don't think I'm appreciating those recommendations for starting on hard.

Hard isn't that hard. Then again, I didn't have FPS issues like console players appear doomed to have.

A no hud mod is already in the wild, apparently it's a DLL hack though, so might wait a little bit to see if a better solution presents itself (patch it ubi?)

Some no-hud non-spoilery gameplay

Hard's not easy when you have a 60 bullet max. I'll work it out but I had been under the impression that hard was like normal in most games, and that's not the case here.

It kind of is once you upgrade your gear. I mean, I literally spent eight hours ignoring the main story to hunt and build up my inventory, so maybe I'm just weird about video games that way.

I tried for most of my two hours to do that as well, but...well, fate wasn't having it.

I tried the by-land route to where the deer hang out, and as I was driving heard an explosion behind me. I looked back to see a truck on fire and a large wooden cage, enemies littering the ground. I was then mauled by a bear from the side and killed in two hits.

Then I figured I'd sneak out there through the foliage. On the way I ran into some tapirs, figured I could use them as well, and shot two. I was then jumped by five wild dogs and taken down by the last two alive.

The next mishap was mostly my own fault. On the way there a bunch of treasure icons popped up, so I went over there and found some enemies fighting a tiger. The tiger finished them all, then finished me.

Finally, I decided to try the water route, taking the jetski near the starting village. I got about halfway there, found myself atop a waterfall, and lo, two deer drinking by the pool below. Stuck them both with arrows. Jumped off the waterfall, went into the diving motion, and WHAM died when I hit the bottom of the 2 foot pool.

Game's rad, of course, but I dunno about playing on hard.

Weird -- I'm playing on Hard, and disappointed at how easy the gameplay is. My main gripe is that the main character holds his pistol out far enough that I can't sight with the gun very well, with the HUD being a secondary consideration. Playing on the 360, though, so no .dll hacks for me.

I've yet to come across tigers, but Komodo dragons and wild dogs have been easy to handle, and the boars are pansies who run away from me.

I do like that both the enemies and I seem to go down in only a few shots. That feels great. I appreciate that the "difficulty" isn't equivalent to "NPCs can eat a billion bullets".

Step 1: Get Knife
Step 2: Hack yellow plant
Step 3: Create Animal Repellant
Step 4: Use Animal Repellant.
Step 5: Aim better (60 bullets is more than enough considering you can take out entire outposts with a rock and a knife)
Step 6: Shoot Bear
Step 7: Enjoy.

Also, go hunt some Boars and craft a bigger ammo bag if you need more bullets.

It *is* weird, because I always play shooters on hard, at least when I like them. I think I'm just not good at managing the open-world antics the game can throw at you.

Perhaps you should try this game instead?

Playing this. Only about 1 hour in. Loving that hour though. It has made me realize that my laptop is no longer top of the line. The framerate is a little stuttery so I'll have to turn down some of the graphical options. Worst part is all the autodetect settings were set to high.

You probably still can do high Vector, just turn your post-processing to medium or lower. It's extremely intensive to the point that my TV-PC went from 2fps to 40 or so just by adjusting that one value.

Thanks for the tip. I'll change that when I get back from work.

Running all my settings on ultra other than MLAA which I only have at x4. Taking that down from x8 to x4 gave me around a 20 fps boost (from 40 average to 60 average).

Oh wow, that made a huge difference for me, going from high to medium. Game feels much smoother now. Thanks!

This Nvidia beta driver http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/art... also apparently increases preformance by up to 37%

I've only played a hour so far.

Got bit by a snake. Chased down several boars that ran away after taking a bullet. Got into a stream to get a plant, even though I expected to be mauled by a crocodile.

This game has checklists - lots and lots of checklists.

My only complaint so far is that it can be a bit choppy on the PS3. It looks great, but its not as smooth as I would like.

That's been my exact experience minus being bitten and on a PC. I swear I thought a crocodile would get me. I sat at the edge of the stream and mulled going in. Finally built up enough nerve and almost panicked when I went underwater.

Really looking forward to ending my work day and exploring Rook Island.

Pretty much my start to the game apart from I nearly had a heart attack when I fell into the edge of he lake and got absolutely mauled by a crocodile that came out of nowhere!

Thanks for confirming my fears. Jerk.

Yeah, seriously crocodiles are seriously messing with me. Like I said, I've only seen the one, but it was enough. Now every time I'm anywhere near lakes and rivers I'm always watching that water line.

Nothing like heart-stopping fight or flight panic responses as a behaviour change tool.

Am I the only one that bought the steam version? <-- idiot

No, i got the steam version. Why, would that make you an idiot?

I too, am confused. Steam version is a misnomer, though. Like Assassin's Creed, it launches UPlay and that annoys me slightly.
