Far Cry 3

I'm in Australia and yes, the thought of buying it now and taunting the crap out of you all is really tempting

I'll think on it some more. Translation, I'll ask the wife if I'm allowed to buy it :p

The friend system being cutout is the one thing I'll really miss. Dying and having someone save your ass and then fighting off your attackers with them. Best feeling ever. Not to mention it's all dynamic so never expect it when it happens. I want some game to really explore such things a lot. it's crazy immerssive to me.

Well I'm doing pretty well on the survival part... but I could sell the idea of a training aide for the kids. "Look honey, it shows you how to apply bandages after you've been savagely mauled by a tiger. That's gotta be helpful for the kids when they're preparing for school in the morning!"

Far Cry 3 is essentially a "survive Australia" simulator (on easy mode), so you could call it a practical purchase.

Edit: Can't spell in the morning

The game is great, and I'm having a lot of fun.

I'm no good at this taunting thing.

Well see there is another part. The price for us Aussies is $20 more than everyone else, so if I do actually get permission, then I'll have to ask someone nicely for a paypal / steam gift type arrangement and that's not really going to work if I'm taunting people.

Also, would that work if someone gifted it to me from a region that wont have it unlocked till dec 4? If i receive it, will it be unlocked or locked to their region?

I think the idea is 1) ask for favor then 2) taunt mercilessly.

Gotta do this stuff in proper order.

I'm pretty sure it's all based on your location. That's why VPNs work, right?

Hmm, true. OK... so permission from wife, ask for gift/paypal from super nice person, then taunt mercilessly. I think I'm set. Now to put this plan into action!

Also, Hyetal, did you get the special edition? If so, worth it?

I did not. It does look like quite a bit of additional content, but after 4 hours 6 hours (edit: I read wrong) into the game, I'm at 16% completion. And I've barely done any of the extraneous stuff.

The Giant Bomb QL has both PC and 360 footage, and the 360 version looks a worse (mainly shadows and draw distance) but definitely good enough for me. I'll be getting this soon.

Annoyingly this game is totally absent from Steam in the UK for some reason so I had to grab it from Gamersgate instead. Downloaded 1/3 this morning.

Not sure how my PC will handle it (I'm Waaaay down on that chart posted a couple of pages back), but fingers crossed. I guess if nothing else this'll push me towards a shiny new graphics card in the new year

This wait is somewhat excruciating. Especially since Rook Island is already sitting on my hard drive... calling to me... whispering "F*** you, you f******* c*** f**** p****, come and f*** up s*** already!"

How did this happen? Isn't America supposed to be First in Everything, Forever and Always?

Hmmm...

I am very sad to learn that the real time map has been taken out.

My rental copy is on the way. I'd forgotten I'd put it on the list, since I thought it would be best to get some other games out of the way first.

I was indifferent towards this and then read some reviews. Looking forward to seeing if I'll like it better than 2.

This game is really cool. Exploration is so much fun. It's like the love child of Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption with Far Cry 2 and Crysis 2 serving as the cranky uncles. Very cool game.

That made me black out from pleasure overload.

Also, let that be a lesson to everyone in how to taunt mercilessly.

You know when you picked up that silenced Makarov in Far Cry 2? You thought to yourself, "I will become the god of shadows and death. I'll kill all the guys with my sneakiness!" So you changed, you morphed, you upgraded to the stealth suit, and set out to conquer an outpost. Quick-saving like a good PC gamer, you approach the first bad guy, pistol at the ready... and he dies! You killed him! Right in the head! And then someone sees you. Damn, you exclaim, finger pressed up against the quick-load key. ... Rinse, repeat. Just me?

Stealth wasn't very good in Far Cry 2. There were moments, sure, but by and large, the NPCs were stupid little aimbots. But it was adequate enough, and just short of doable, that I definitely felt the need to keep trying.

I guess it comes as little surprise that I'm much happier with Far Cry 3 in this regard. Actually, the feel is very similar to Dishonored, sans Blink. You can even drag enemies, though not nearly as swiftly as Corvo carries them.

Grubber is right about that other stuff.

But the stealth, man. It's like they made this game for me.

Couple questions for you jerks (:)) with early access:

1) Does the game have a benchmark tool?

2) Can you still wound guys and use them as bait? (e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuXfb...)

Look, will one of you just tell me what happens when you throw a grenade up a hill?

I had already watched TB's WTF Is video, then last night I watched a couple twitch streams, one of which was a guy playing in-game poker at a table a la RDR.

I don't think I'm going to have the willpower to wait until the last day of the winter Steam sale (to see if it appears on a daily deal). The more of it I see, the more I want this game. And that's saying a lot, as I'm not much of a FPS fan.

So those of you who are playing on the PC - what can you tell me about the save system? Is it really the case that you can only save in specific locations? That would suck. Are there mid-mission checkpoints? How long are the main quests / missions and sidemissions? My gaming time is rather sporadic, what with having a baby and two little girls in the house, so this is a real concern. It's still on pre-order, and I will play the hell out of it, but I might only be able to do that if I sacrifice chunks of sleep, depending on the answer here.

Only played two hours and so far it's super awesome. Hunting to craft new stuff is so much fun!

You can't save during missions but so far they have been really short (kill X, clear outpost...).

edit: mmm, nm, looks like was just bugged out for a sec.

Have you actually done this? And thoughts on being safe? I'm told VPN can easily get your steam banned.

Ok, permission from the wife... check! Now, um.... is there anyone willing to do a Paypal/Steam gift deal for the deluxe edition for the lovely price of $59.99?

No, this doesn't work. Even if it did, I can't imagine them banning, since you're basically just playing a game you've paid for in the correct store legitimately.

I watched the GiantBomb Quick Look for this last night. The game wasn't even on my radar, but it certainly is now. Only question - how long do I wait for the digital deluxe edition? Shouldn't I wait at least until payday?
