Ingress: The Google ARG

My Google ID is the same as my forum ID. If anyone can send invites.

Best thing to do for now is to go here
http://www.ingress.com

and sign up.
I've not heard any rumors or hints of when they are going to offer invites outside of signing up.
I did have luck getting one by begging on Google + to some of the Ingress/google people. That's how I got in. I then had some account issues and managed to snag another through the support. This was a while ago and both are in use.

Submitted and following them on google+. Looks like they are giving codes to creative people... might have to think about it.

I can't remember what my creative thing was but I tried all kinds of stuff. Poetry, art (not great art), cleverness...It may have just come down to sheer spamminess.

My Google name is:

Strangeblades

I know. Shocking.

So I was playing around with this today. Looks like it could be a laugh, especially for a runner. I'm struck that it seems a bit grindy, but I'm interested in working with it for a bit to see how it progresses. I'm technically not gaming until 01 MAY (thanks, Bioshock Infinite, for testing that resolve) but this involves me being out and about, so it's getting a pass.

Bethesda is a bit of a battleground, by the look of it, as is DC in general. It's a bloody sea of green, which I intend to change. ColdstreamGWJ is the name. Will be interested to see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Just got an invite without doing anything other than signing up. How do I keep it gathering XM while being able to do other stuff on my phone? Or is it an all or nothing thing?

EDIT: My username is manta173 as always.

All or nothing. A lot of people do it while commuting since portals and XM tend to fall along arterials.

Hmm... I might have to only play this when I am travelling as I drive to work.

So I'm travelling to Gaithersburg MD this week and Houston next week. I would love to be able to make some sort of giant triangle with the C2E2 trip at the end of the month or my home location.

Am I thinking too big?

Also Viva la Resistance!!

Yup.

Well that's no fun. I go to Europe and Japan on a semi regular basis.

When I travel and claim portals in other areas, I drop one of my home portal keys as a souvenir for the locals. It's small satisfaction next to the idea of a half-continent field, but it's a nice joke.

New portal keys are also nice souvenirs, and they don't take up any space in your luggage.

Side tip (this may have been posted before): you can only have one key from a portal at a time but you can drop the key prior to hacking then pick the key back up to carry more than one.

Unless this changed recently, I've had as many as 7 keys for the same portal, and without dropping/juggling keys.

I fizzled on this pretty quickly, but when I was playing you wouldn't get a key if you already had it in your inventory. But yeah, I haven't played for a few updates now.

You can have lots of keys. I have 4 for a building near my work office. You need to spend keys to make links, so you definitely need more than one at a time.

I just signed up for this last week and still holding for an invite. My must have it tendencies are starting to take over and I've went to IRC, twitter, G+, and OMG facebook in hopes of finding one. I don't know what it is about not being able to have something now that makes we want it so bad...

My boss plays the crap out of this and to me it seems like ARG FarmVille. The GPS component adds novelty, but all I see from the outside is "oh, I've gotta spam this portal whenever we walk to lunch." I haven't dug into it enough to know the details, but I'm not sure I get the draw, is there more to it than just being in the right place and hitting the same buttons? Maybe you have to be in a big metropolitan area for it to be interesting.

There are a lot of turf battles in bigger cities... it's more akin to being in a gang than playing farmville.

Yeah, I didn't last long as it was very much about grinding for me. I telecommute and live in a smaller town so I only have a few portals to work without really making it a trip.

I haven't got too far with it yet. Seems like it never wants to work with the GPS when I'm out and about.

It worked for me but I kept leaving it running on my 45 min drive home to hit portals aand gather whatever the resouce is called... ate up my data plan.

Now you've got me nervous about my data plan. I've got 2.5, how much of yours did it eat up?

I have a shared 4 gig plan with my wife. We used up 3 the month before I got it and ran out the month I started using it.

I guess I'll have to only play near coffee shops and restaurants.

As I said before I was running it for my commute. 45 mins each way each day (@70 miles an hour). I assume if you don't travel as far then it won't pull as much data since it is map based. I could be wrong though.

Good point. Don't think I'll be running it for that long. Maybe it'll be ok for me.

Liquid was kind enough to hook me up with a code, so I was able to get in (Although for some reason the game isn't working properly for me). I now however, have just received the invite code I signed up for so many weeks ago. Is anyone in need? First to ask gets it.

Edit: Taken!
