Ingress: The Google ARG

I don't see a thread. Anyone playing? Here's the brief:

The primary goal of the game is defend the takeover of the human race by an unknown “Shaper” force or, depending on your perspective, to assist in an “Enlightenment” of mankind through an alliance with the Shapers. This is accomplished by aligning with either the Resistance or the Enlightened faction and by creating “Control Fields” over geographic areas. Progress in the game is measured by the number of Mind Units controlled by each Faction (visible on the Intel Map).

XM Control Fields are established by claiming Portals and then linking Portals together to form Fields. More powerful Portals can link over longer distances (up to hundreds of kilometers). The link range of a Portal is determined by the power of the attached Resonators. Portal Keys are needed to form links.

When three Portals are linked to form a triangle, a Control Field is established over the region. It will be rendered on the Scanner as a hazy blue or green field over the area. The number of Mind Units claimed is related to the population density of the area covered. Cities yield more Mind Units than rural areas.

Your ultimate goal is to cooperate with other players in your Faction to secure or liberate the entire world.

Kind of fun.

I might play this when it comes out for iOS.

It looks fun but it also looks like it wants you to drive all over any given city in order to truly "play." Probably great for vacationing, a day stuck shopping with family members for the perfect item, or just a day off to drive.

Or, living and commuting daily in an urban environment might even be optimal.

I love Augmented Reality on principle and am glad to see it becoming reality in my lifetime. This is awesome. The game itself looks like it's for a different audience, though.

Tried signing up but didn't get an e-mail back from them. Dunno if it's supposed to be automated or if they're down for the holiday.

tanstaafl,

What I read on one of the less disgusting internet marketing blogs was that there are a LOT more signups than slots available right now. That could have changed this week, or it could be the reason.

If it's anything like the other google beta products, there are probably only a few thousand users that occasionally get invites to add their friends. The mass flood of invites probably won't start until June-ish.

I got in and have been playing when I can. I only have 2 portals available to me where I work, not in walking distance.
None around my home in east-end Ottawa.

LOTS of them downtown Ottawa but have not ventured down there yet.

it's lots of fun, I get the impression that there are a lot more than a few thousand players. If you browse the G= universe for #ingress there are a lot of hits. They are global.

I am playing as the Resistance as I don't want my mind controlled by some fanboi (Enlightened) of whatever entity is opening these portals.

here's a shot of hwo our downtown core looks right now. Resistance has it locked away.
The numbers you see at the top are the scores of each faction. I'm not sure what constitue one unit but the Enlightened have really come up. They were half our score yesterday.

Forward invites if you get them, I've got a pile of android to join the Resistance!

I got in earlier in the week. Really fun. Did a bunch of hunting for neutral portals yesterday in Niagara-on-the-Lake after work. Sure it's time consuming, but I wouldn't say it's more time consuming than, say, Geocaching. It's just that you're hunting for imaginary objects -- and don't have to look nearly as hard. There's hardly any portals in my town though, but plenty in Niagara Falls and NOTL. All kinds of historic sites and other attractions.

The night that I first got it I spent collecting portals. 23 submitted in all. I have no idea how many are actually going to make it through though.

Also no invites yet, but I will let you know when/if I get them (assuming I get them before the game is open to the public.)

This will depend heavily on where you are vacationing/shopping/driving. Portals are based on landmarks, so you'll tend to find lots of them in metropolitan areas, particularly those with lots of monuments (San Francisco, DC, Paris, etc.), and not so much in the 'burbs (there is 1 portal where I live, and about 30 where I work).

Also you can install the app and submit potential portals ahead if getting good your invite.
Also that invite link in the screenshot above doesn't invite yet.

Score is based on estimated population in the area all your factions fields cover. I didn't ask the team where they get their population data, but I doubt they'd be able to say even if I did.

I just signed up for an invite, but if anyone has one, I'd be interested!

Really? I installed the app and tried to run it and the first thing it did was ask for a code then tell me I needed an invite.

No when you install the app it ads a sharing item to your Camera.

That there is my garage after I ripped out a bunch of rickety old shelves the previous owner built.

I also managed to capture my first portal the other day. Already recharged it once

Don't bother recharging it. You level up in this game by taking over stuff, which means you want it to decay back to neutral or have the other side take it.

What's the best way to manage a small number of invites? Most of us from beta got some to hand out.

PS - Join Enlightened. Don't let the terrorists win.

Ooh, I'll take one pretty please!

Oh, here's a shot of Santa Monica, where I play. There's one portal all the way at the end of the pier, and there was a resistance player waiting at the end of it trying to defend the portal. Unfortunately, they were shy and didn't say hello.

I'm mostly trying to get to level 8 quickly (there's 8 levels of gear) so I can start stockpiling supplies.

Ah, got it. On my phone it shows up as "NIA Super Ops" and I didn't make the connection.

I'd be interested in one.

I applied for a code, but like most people here it seems I didn't get an invite yet. I'd love one if anyone has a spare! The only concern I have is that since I live in a small town, there might not be a whole lot to do around here.

Dont listen to the Enlightened scum. All he wants is your mind.
When I get some invites I'll pass them on. I am also in Beta but have not received any.

Good point though, let it go neutral and then re-cap it.

I need to go hack the ones by my work again. I've run out of level 1 resonators.

Hey, anyone notices any item passcodes make sure to update this thread with them. Thsi site keeps track of the known ones.
http://ingressfieldguide.com/

Wait, if i let it go neutral i lose 8 more resonators. I don't have enough to begin with.

Don't you get XP for refilling?

Uhh.. why do I feel as if I just took the red pill?

No, you get no AP for recharging resonators. If some disappear and it's not taken, you do get points for deploying replacements, for creating links and fields.

Beta ended a couple of weeks ago, though you could make the standard argument that v1.0 of a game is just public beta.

Done.

I'm drowning in useless L1 resonators. If you can't find 8 spare resonators in a week, you aren't hitting enough portals. Hopefully you submitted some portal suggestions and they make it through, if you aren't in a densely populated portal area.

Type them in slowly during off peak, because the servers are lagging, but ingressfieldguide.com/?q=passcodes has a bunch of passcodes to give you some resonators.

I've used all the codes

iI had an issue happen that my first profile, the one that iI used to redeem most of the passcodes, got overwritten when Niantic sent me a second code. It automatically activated on my Google account and erased all that I'd done. iI have a ticket out with Google since it appears the other account is still out there.
Hopefully they can merge the two and give me what's mine!

ya, I'm on a suburb that doesn't have a lot of stuff around. I've submitted a few locations. Looking forward to seeing them activate.

And thanks to CaptainChaos for hooking me up. I'm ready to join the fight as soon as I have time to run through ADA's tutorial.

Unfortunately I have a presentation this afternoon I have to pull a bunch of reports for. Don't they know I need to save the world!

I got an invite (thanks Captain Chaos!); still working my way through the training missions. I am supposed to link a portal with 8 resonators, but apparently I don't have enough energy after installing the resonators to charge them. Sadly, i'm stuck at home and I can't move around too much, for the time being, so getting more XM is a problem, apparently. Maybe later when I get around to running some errands I'll be able to do more with it.

Oh, invites? Hook a brother up! liquidmantis at gmail. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, captainchaos!
