Planetside 2 Catch-All

Joined up with QD today. We had a good run pushing around the public zerg on indar. I spent some time as all the classes. Either I am a terrible sniper or the default weapon stinks. HA and L.A. were both fun. I found the jetpack to be a bit under-powered so some of my certs will likely go that way.

Any advice on early cert spending?

Am I the only one that's just not feeling the whole Vanu vibe? I'm trying to embrace the whole story but I'm really struggling. I like the guys in AD but sooooo much purple and soooooo much pew pew pew!

I want to just pitch this out there, in case you feel like considering it. My outfit is NC and we play on Connery (West Coast) because, hello: James Bond.

Anyway, there will be times when few people are on the primary GwJ server (or it's down), and then you'd be welcome to join us. I figure we could have a "confederation" of outfits spread across the servers.

I ran with some of you great guys a few days ago (though I still need to be added to QD as an outfit-member). Lots of fun being Vanu, and know that I'll jump in from time to time.

Anyway, if this sounds floatable, maybe we could revise the "Catch-all" source post to include some vital stats. I sure don't want to divert focus, I just want to make it clear that if you ever get the hankering for some NC fun, you could find a group of like-minded people with a good attitude.

There's a story?

If anyone's in Quantum Dawn on Waterson and wants to throw me an invite (PXAbstraction), that would be awesome. I'm having a blast with this!

Eh the story never clicked for me much in this game I just think NC gets better music then anyone else.

Tips for sniping? Well remember you can hold you breath to steady your aim (F key I think), and a stronger scope helps a lot.

Edit: There's some decent background fluff, although you'd never know that from the game.

Tips for certs? Get all the first level zoom certs for all vehicle weapons. They only cost 1 point a piece and are fantastic. Each weapon also has a cert for more ammo that cost 1 point so you can get those too. Now for infantry you can pick up the first level of armor for 1 point as well. I take the one that increases your health as that's an instant 10% boost to health. After that the first thing I pick up is a reflex scope for my preferred weapon and the sunderer mobile spawn point. I'd also get the grenade launcher but they got rid of it (not bitter). I'm going to save up for the homing rockets for heavy next.

No, I'm not particularly fond of the Protoss... I mean Vanu either. Space zealot isn't a good vibe for me, while the Terrans with their heavy armor and machine gun look seems a lot cooler.

Fortunately the "story" trappings of the game are pretty laughably irrelevant, so in the long run what matters is a good group of people behind all the purple pixels.

We should decide on a secondary server for another faction. Considering you can't have two characters on the same faction, and they do have some very different gameplay aspects to them.

I started playing Terran Republic on Helios after not falling in love with the Vanu right away. I want to try all three before grinding out some rank and weapons, seems like the most logical idea.

You have to apply on their website. We don't have controll over invites.

I am also not a fan of Vanu and have been playing TR on Waterson.

Noooooo. We need NC! Come to the Rebellion! They had a Rebellion in Star Wars and everyone thought they were cool. And it's good you stayed away from the Hive-Mind of the VS. *shivers*

Probable not the best example, everyone knows the empire is cooler in star wars. Much better uniforms...

Great tips on Certs! That's exactly what I was looking for. Got on again last night and had a couple of NC Turkey Shoots over a cliff. Liking the new sights!

You guys think the smoke grenades are worth unlocking? And for Vanu Medics/Engineers...which weapon and unlocks do you prefer?

As a Vanu Medic, I've been using the H-V45 Assault Rifle. It has a closer range than the Pulsar, but it unloads it's clip much faster meaning you kill things quicker. But, it's not as effective when you get to open ground encounters. Because it's a close quarters weapon, I've only unlocked the Reflex Scope for it. Anything with more zoom will be almost useless.

For other unlocks, I've upgraded my Medic Tool to level 3 and I plan to upgrade it even more. Being able to res someone almost instantly is a huge boon. Anything to be able to get out of the line of fire quicker is a must. Also, upgrade your Nano-Weave Armor. Since you can heal yourself, it's better to have a bigger health pool than quicker shield regen.

Also, while I do kill a lot of stuff I try to focus on playing support, which means helping to push lines forward by getting Sunderers in position. As such, definitely get the AMS cert. Use it enough times and it will pay for itself.

I need AMMO!

I wouldn't spend points unlocking any grenade for the medic other than the Nano-Revive. That one has the potential to be a game changer when used properly.

Med Tool, Nano-Weave, and AE Heal ability all to 3 or 4 are pretty much essential if you're playing a support medic IMO. I've also picked up the universal heal pack, because you can never have too many ways to heal yourself.

In terms of weapons I've spent most of my time with the HV45. I have to disagree with Tkyl a bit in that I think your choice of optics for the gun will depend on your playstyle. It is considered the CQB variant, but it's perfectly accurate out to the limits of what the 4X scope will show you. I scored a number of kills and assists last night on targets distant enough to only be a pixel smudge without the scope. I plan to cert into the laser sight next for when the action is more up close and personal.

So, got started playing this morning. (Going with Vanu on Waterson)

For something that runs at 5FPS, has no tutorials, and is utterly confusing: It's really fun.

A couple of questions, though. I got the mid-range ACOG for the medic, since that's by far the range I'm best at, and the extra armor. Not sure where to go from there, though. The utility C4 looks like a hilarious amount of fun, though I'm not sure I could do the BC2-style C4 applied directly to the tank.

Anyone have any input on how useful it actually is? Not gonna get it for a long while, I'd like to get my medic abilities sorted now that I can actually hit things at range.

The tutorial videos are in the game launcher or you can find it in the OP of this thread.

It's not that the HV45 cannot kill things at a distance, but that it isn't as good as say the stock Pulsar at doing so. And certainly, your weapon choice should depend on your playstyle. I tend to play at short ranges and so use the HV45. If you like longer engagement ranges, I wouldn't recommend the HV45.

Where are you guys getting these weapons lists from? I can't find an H-V45 anywhere in the Planetside 2 wiki??

Wiki

HV45 should actually be Hydra-VA45

The wiki is out of date (big shock there!) They call it the Centauri or somesuch in the wiki.

Ah! THAT is why. Hm, another question, if I unlock a Rifle for the Medic, can I also use that rifle on another class? Or are all weapons class specific?

You can, only if that weapon is usable by the other classes. The assault rifles are Medic only.

I was kind of excited about the revive grenades but do they behave like regular grenades? If so I can't imagine trying to land of those in a fairly exact spot during a firefight.

I got the med tool to 4 and am about halfway to 5 in terms of certs...cant wait to hit 5 for the extra range and full revives. Picked up the Equinox with station cash the other day because it had has more rail options, but so far it just feels weak. I'll check out the H-V45 and make decision. Thanks guys

I think the basic starter weapon is pretty limited. The Vanu start LMG is the Orion for instance, low magazine size, low ammo capacity and it can't use special ammo. The other starting weapons follow this pattern. I guess it's designed to make you want to upgrade?

Also I figured out the trial system. You can use any piece of equipment for 30 minutes, once every 8 hours. BUT, the key limitation is that once you use a weapon you can't try it out again for... a month. A MONTH? Who's bright idea was this? I tried out the Lasher once, but given the action that was going on I got to use the weapon all of three times. (firing at walls doesn't count). This is nowhere near enough of a trial to help me decide to spend 7 bucks.

Smoke grenades can be more useful then you think. I remember when they where an attachment option for a gun. If the hand grenades are similar well, they definitely can help. First no one expects them, and they really provide a lot of cover. If you have thermal you can see straight through it, which could be crazy strong. If the regular grenade launcher attachment wasn't so great I'd keep both, sadly they seem to have removed both attachments for being too awesome.

It looks like they haven't completely removed the under-barreled attachments, but restricted them to just a few weapons -- which all appear to be slightly weaker in order to compensate for the advantage.

On a side note, I've been really digging the night visions/thermal scopes. You don't get any zoom, but the contrast you get makes it significantly easier to make out enemies as well as spot cloaked infiltrators. You can't use it for longer range engagements (it's practically blind past a certain point,) but I find myself working within it's operational range more often than not.
