Planetside 2 Catch-All

Wouldn't mind joining QD, but just read through their forums and I just don't have the energy to fool with all of that pseudo-military stuff. Maybe it's because I'm in the military in real-life, but getting 'assigned' a role just sounds like a drag.

I know the feeling but I say give it a try and you can always leave if you want.

What about it don't you like? Do you think you're stuck to that role all the time? I've only played with them a couple times so far, but all of the people I've met so far seem pretty laid back, and are there to have fun first and foremost. Just last night, I played a medic for a while, then went engineer to help repair some base turrets and our vehicles. After most people left and we only had about 3 people left, the one division leader asked what we wanted to do, and the other guy suggested we tool around in a liberator for a while. I blurted out that I hadn't even tried to fly yet in this game, so the division leader told me that I was flying. We had some fun trying some bombing runs, until I inevitably crashed into a tower. We all had a good laugh, then proceeded to try and invade one of the bases as infantry. Good times were had.

I'd also suggest giving it a shot, and if you don't like it, you can drop out. I'm pretty sure there won't be any hard feelings.

I suggested joined Quantum Dawn for most people on here for the reason that they aren't super strict with things. Yes there are times where we have to listen to the squad leader and commanders but you are never stuck with a specific class. If you choose the vehicle devision for example, you don't always have to be in a vehicle. It's more of a preference and you will be asked a times to get tanks.

It really is a night and day difference being part of an organized outfit. Otherwise you are stuck with people that are throwing themselves into enemy bullets.

The release client still doesn't run that well for me. Dropped in a brand new 560ti and I still get 30fps on bare minimum settings. And that's outside of combat.

Wow, don't know how that is, I just have a gtx 260 at 1920x1080 and doing fine. Might try these, although I haven't run with them either yet. What's your cpu and memory speed?

I've noticed that at times in the beta, the game would actually drop to low fps when the lag was high.

This game actually uses the CPU 50% of the time for graphics for some reason. In game press alt f and it will show you. I'm also running a 560ti but with just a q6600 and get 20-40 in fights.

I do have the Beta drivers. My CPU is an E8400 core 2 duo which is above the "minimum" spec. 4 gigs of DDR2. The game uses PhysX and currently it forces all of that number crunching onto the CPU. I suspect that is the main problem. Right now graphics power isn't the issue. I can turn everything up to maximum and only lose about 5fps, the 560ti is probably very underworked at the moment. Lag might be an issue but it's a small one. In beta I played on a west server, now I'm playing Vanu on Watterson and it doesn't feel sluggish. I don't have any trouble hitting stationary targets but my low FPS makes fast moving stuff difficult.

In beta I played as a MAX most of the time(didn't play too much) but in Live I don't want to use up my infantry points on them. So I'm leaning towards focusing on the Heavy Assault and I can kill most people if I get the drop on them, so I'm liking it a fair amount. I signed up for premium and with that I have enough SC space money to unlock any gun for any class so I really want to make sure the Heavy is my class first. What classes are people seeing the most and what classes are people enjoying the most?

I started with Med to be helpful but when we started getting into a lot of vehicle ambushes I started to go heavy and enjoyed it.

Also, enjoyed my time in the outfit tonight. Really, the only orders is when the main guy just request groups to try to take different things but you can use whatever class. It was fun and they were great.

Are you in Dawn?

The game keeps crashing for me about half the times I redeploy after I get killed (which happens a LOT), it will crash to desktop. Anyone else getting this?

Yeah I have the same problem, from a quick glance at their tech help forums, others are as well. For me its pretty random, could be ten minutes, could be 45 minutes, but at some point "planetside.exe has stopped working" - had the same issue in beta and hoped it would be resolved by release, I think its some kind of memory leak crash. Still gonna play but you can only get so into a game when you know that next ctd can happen at any time.

Tried it for a little bit today.

This game makes Battlefield 3 with 64 players feel... peaceful.

I'm loving the light assault. There's a lot of new people so none of them have learn to look up yet. Put me in the right place and I just rack up kills. The new sunderer system (can't be deployed closely) slightly annoys me but makes sense. Earned enough points for the spawn support for sunderer, and a reflex scope. I want the heavy homing rockets, but their a thousand a piece. All the pricing went up and you earn things at about the same rate as before. C4 used to be like 50 certs now they are 200. Still I suppose it makes sense as I was earning stuff very quick before. Great fun, which I had my mike right now though.

I don't think I'm liking this game. So far I've spent the whole night being repeatedly killed over and over without knowing even why.

I'm really not getting any sense of feedback from the combat. Maybe because I end up dying before I ever seeing anybody.

Oh well, at least I didn't spend any money on it.

Yes, there's quite a lot of that. Apparently headshots are extremely deadly in this game.

This is also my anti-aircraft experience. When I'm in the ground on the turret firing at enemy air units, I fire and fire and fire and fire and maybe land a few hits. When the positions are reversed, I'm shot out of the sky in five seconds. I do much better with the one-man tanks, for some reason.

I'm desperately trying to fly the aircraft -- since it's something I really like -- but they control like drunken manatees. I was a master of the Raptor in UT2004, but I just can't wrap my brain around the PS2 aircraft controls. The fact that I can only practice two times every fifteen minutes makes for a hard road ahead. Do you guys switch to joystick controls or something?

If you guys are not playing with an outfit there are a bunch of us meeting up on Ventrilo for some basic squad play. There is very little you can accomplish solo in this game so it's a lot more fun with others.

When I play I tend to sit in Vent until somebody comes along to join. If I remember to start it up that is.

Most kills are someone getting the first few shots in on someone else. Having two battle lines face off is even more chaotic (but you tend to live longer), especially in an enclosed area (here you do not live longer and often hit your teammates), but a lot fun.

I f*cking hated the UT2004 vehicles. All of them, except the Leviathan maybe. So here's the thing, the airplanes in PS2 have airplane controls, which means you need to roll and pull up. What you need to do is bind "pulling up" to a button and not the mouse axis unless you're one of those people that can make smooth continuous motions with a mouse even when you have to pick it up and reposition it.

Probably a dumb question but I'm going to ask anyways: when does my Alpha Member Boost kick in? When the game launches or when I actually apply it? I'm probably not gonna get much time to play until the middle of December and don't want to be wasting time.

You have to apply it, so you could save it if you'd like.

Soo, SOE has offered me a refund as long as my Vanu groan is deleted
I'll lose my 3 levels but,I get the money back.

This is why me and others keep saying to play with a squad, any squad or better, an outfit. Things make more sense and are much more fun. You cannot play this solo.

They fly like helicopters in BF3 they hover and can stay in place. Think of them like that and you will be fine.

:)

SOE support seems to be doing a good job. They fixed my boost problem pretty quickly.

Added my name to the doc - next time I am on I'll start friending folks up.

Looks like weapon previews didn't make it in release?

I think people were using them but another bug came up where trial weapons would disappear.

It's works. Just click buy and then there will be a trial button on the bottom. Be warned though: Right now if you have a boost equipped and have a trial weapon going and you log off the boost will disappear. It happened to me and I submitted a ticket and they already fixed it.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if pressing buy meant I bought it for good.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE

This was being spammed as a system notice every half-hour last night, but it still bears repeating to make sure everyone knows about it:

If you have a boost installed (like your Alpha Squad six-month boost) you should NOT get a weapon trial - because getting a trial weapon and logging out will probably delete your boost. It's a bug they're working on.

Its Fixed:

Hello Everyone,

We’re bringing the servers down for maintenance in 30 minutes for a hotfix. We expect to be down for about an hour.

Fixes include:
Weapon trials will no longer destroy boosts upon expiration
Fixed roof collision on a base structure
Fixed a couple of Depot filter issues
Fixed server issue where some players were unable to log back in
Client crash fix
Cheers,
Ryan

I was also hoping the "Client crash fix" would solve my very frequent CTD's... it hasn't.

Downloading it. But not sure my poor laptop will be able to handle it.

Oh, you can play it solo. If you persevere, practice practice practice and refuse to quit, then you will reach the point where you spend the whole night being repeatedly killed over and over but you will know why you died. Or you can link up with an outfit and probably enjoy the game rather than suffer it. Still gonna die, but it won't be as frustrating in the same way.

PhysX is currently disabled so that can't be it. If you hit Alt-F you'll get a display in the lower left that tells you where your bottleneck is.

FYI: You'll need to hit alt a second time to get your control back.

Yup and if you hit tab it will show you every boost or benefit you have over on the right.

If you're spawning into a base that's under heavy attack that's going to happen....a lot. One of the first things the offense goes after is the enemy spawn room. You'll spawn, walk out of the room and be greeted by ten to fifteen guys with guns. Sometimes the Sunderers around the perimeters of the bases are less contested.

There's also the fact that a lot of players have spent months in the beta so they know where to position themselves for your arrival! Keep fighting

Could someone jog my memory? I know there is a way to lock your vehicle to squad only, but can't recall how it's done.
