Hopefully that isn't blocked at my job yet so I can watch the countdown reach its ultimate conclusion on Thursday.
I plan on being very disappointed if I can't play it the second the countdown finishes. It seems the thing to do these days.
Oh god.... I'm doomed....
Replying to this thread cause I want it in my tracker thingie....
Of course, no matter what happens it will still be nearly impossible to play with North American Goodjer Goodness, but...
I'd pay for just slightly updated Planetside with lots of folks playing, mechanics for forcing teams/squads/battalions/etc. that work together or die, and connections working well for >200 people at once.

I'll play with you Roo, i'm only a few hundred nautical miles away.
I don't think I've ever been more hype for release.
The hover tank had better be a lawnmower or I'm going to be disappointed.
Just have to make it though the rest of the day to see what the countdown reveals. I have not been this excited about a game in a long time.
So there's this, and a few screenshots, and a FAQ:
What is PlanetSide® 2?
PlanetSide 2 is a Massively Multiplayer first person shooter that delivers truly epic, massive combat on a scale never before seen in stunning, breathtaking detail. Battles take place not between dozens of troops, but thousands; with air and ground vehicles slugging it out alongside squads of troops. Whether in open fields, tightly-packed urban centers or enormous structures, winning requires strategic teamwork and a quick trigger finger. Is PlanetSide 2 an MMO?
Yes. PlanetSide 2 is an MMO FPS set in an online persistent world where the war wages non-stop and the balance of power shifts with every base and territory captured and lost. Players will be able to unlock diverse combat roles by advancing through the deep skill trees, including several classic roles from PlanetSide. As players unlock new roles, they can switch between them at will. What are the three factions you can choose from in PlanetSide 2?
Terran Republic - An authoritarian government that leverages military might to maintain strict control over the colonial citizens. The Terran Republic is obsessed with the preservation of law and order and are thus seen by some to be an oppressive and dictatorial force, but many view the TR as the only hope for lasting security on Auraxis.
New Conglomerate - Rebels, freedom fighters or terrorists? The New Conglomerate operates as a loosely organized band of dissidents, vehemently opposed to the stranglehold that the Terran Republic has on Auraxis. Led by an unusual quorum of outcasts, industry titans, pirates and former military leaders, the New Conglomerate is unwavering and prepared to achieve their goals by any means necessary.
Vanu Sovereignty - Vanu has taught that only through technology can humanity evolve it's next state of existence. The Vanu Sovereignty is extremely advanced, employing powerful alien technology on the battlefield. Their singular purpose is to uncover the secrets hidden away in ancient artifacts scattered over the surface of Auraxis and they will annihilate anyone who interferes.
Will there be vehicle-based combat in PlanetSide 2?

I loved the first game, I'll be first in line to play this one as well, I'm sure. Is it too early to think about GWJ squad names?
Wow that was cool. I wan't to play this so bad!

No.
Its curious that there has been no mention of f2p or subscription. Of course this leads me to believe that they are going to try to latch a subscription onto this. I honestly think this is a terrible idea. This game would benefit a ton from a f2p or freemium model. It would even better mesh with EQ2's terribad f2p model because limiting class selection wouldn't affect the free players ability to contribute nearly as much as in EQ2.
It would be interesting in probably a train wreck kinda way, if they implemented a system where the weakest population on a server would allow f2p accounts exclusively for a time. Or maybe that f2p users will have more class options open to them if they choose to create a character on the lowest populated race.
I would also hope they have at least some destructible environments/buildings.
I like what they did with the reserves program a while back. You have a demo account that is fully featured, but only levels up to rank 6. This allows you to do almost everything a paid character can, just not as much of it at once.
*squee*
The problem they had with f2p accounts in Planetside 1 was the rampant hacking it enabled.

All it did was increase the server population. The real problem was having a hackable game that wasn't worth the time and money to fix.
I hope the get a Euro server up . My best ping to their game servers in San Diego is around 210ms.
there is going to be increased empire differentiation, so that the tools, techniques, strategies and tactics for each faction are going to be even more distinct.
This has me excited, I was worried they might be going for a different looks, but same guns approach. The PS forums were nothing but whining about how everyone else has guns/vehicles that are totally OP. I hoped they weren't going to cater to that.
One large change followed on what Higby describes as Planetside’s number one lesson; “get people into the action quicker.” Because of this each factions’ sanctuaries are gone, and with them the Hart shuttle. Instead, each continent has an uncapturable foothold for each faction. To also aid with, and to tie into the missions system, players can also choose to auto-squad with nearby groups, and spawn on their squad – though this latter doesn’t work under every circumstance, to give defenders a chance, it’s one of many elements that should improve the new player experience.
I like the get in the action quicker part, but hopefully it is not at the expense of easily amassing troops for a big assault. Like we used to have in sanc. I wonder how long the "uncapturable foothold" on each cont will last. They must have a plan, but it sounds like something that will make backhacking an issue like it was pre-lattice.
I hope the spawn on your squad thing is just a one time event, like when you log in or something. A replacement for the HART. I would not like to see something like there is in other shooters these days. Just a constant respawn near your squad. I hope the AMS still plays a role in the game.
Played the beta for the first one. I had a lot of fun in beta. Not enough players after retail. I will keep an eye on this one.
I hope the AMS still plays a role in the game.
Amen. Except I hope that role is expanded and diversified. I hope there are AMS's that spawn only MAX's and/or quads but they are bigger, slower, maybe have a turret and have a larger visible radius when stealthed.
Maybe they are fixed encampments that take time to deploy but are planet dropped or take up over half a galaxy. (or even make special galaxies that have ams abilities, maybe even inflight spawning at low altitude!)
Damn they should have hired me to design this game =P
If it were free to play that would make it so much easier to justify playing it. One of the reasons I stopped playing the first is the cost was no longer worth it due to some of the patches they kept making for the purpose of "balance".
OMG that one patch a few months in where the Lashers were flinging neverending lightning bolts of mass devastation. One Vanu could smear the hallways and stairwells with TR and NC blood in seconds.
I feel that with their plans for an EVE-Online style time-based training model, subsciptions sound likely, but who knows...
I wonder if this will affect DUST 514 (I didn't pay attention to the release time-line. Yes, I'm a filthy skimmer).
I agree. The skills are designed to keep you paying for sure. Maybe it will be sub + f2p? But it will definitely have a monthly sub. And I will definitely pay it.
They also haven't mentioned anything about the TK system... The one in Planetside worked but was definitely frustrating often enough to need improvmement.
I want them to take my money already!

Heh, reminds me of the time Pounder MAXs used to be anti-infantry. They could paint the halls with enemy blood, but unlike the lasher they could fire around multiple corners.
Real-time skill learning? That's not cool. I really enjoyed the idea of people coming into the game and being able to do almost anything right off the bat. Your time playing made you more diverse, not more powerful. Might as well add levels.
Faster combat? How fast can it be? Planetside 1 wasn't a slow game compared to other MMOs.
Missions? Let's just call them quests.
This will be a divisive comment, but this looks like the wow-ification of Planetside. Not the resurgence of an awesome sandbox game.
