Planetside 2 Catch-All

Just catching up on all the chatter, been looking forward to this but have been wary about dropping for the Alpha Squad since funds are tight with X-Com coming out (also that thing with Apple).

Play time is another factor as I'm barely putting in enough with GW2 as it is for my liking. With Torchlight 2 and Borderlands 2 this month, it's going to be madness.

Lastly, I'm concerned about how lag is going to be for me connecting from overseas.

I guess this means I would like to request to reserve a beta key so I can test it out before deciding to put money and playtime down for this.

So aparently it is just the East Coast servers. This is taken from the forums.

Heads up East Coast players. We've been listening and investigating the reports of warping and seen it ourselves but the servers themselves were fine. Took some deep investigation but we found the root cause is some bad network gear. This isn't a $20 nic you can by at Best Buy so it will take is a few days even expedited but it will be fixed this week. Just wanted you to have a heads up its being fixed. My suggestion is play on West Coast 2 or 3. It will be way way better.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Smed

Hey, I'm sorry I missed the Galaxy, okay. I did fly some air support though and even managed to take out a sniper who was threatening the squad. By crashing my Scythe into him.

By the way, how do I know that I'm actually at the right Gal? I was looking for a green reticle above it but all I saw was blue so I thought I was about to board the wrong one. Do I need to hop to the map and look for the brighter green one?

Nice to see it'll be fixed.

Thus far I've had three experiences with Planetside 2.

1) Having no knowledge of 'M' for map and being able to hot drop, I tried doing things the Planetside 1 way. The Planetside 1 way I remember from ten frakkin' years ago was to hop on board the shuttle that left every X minutes. They didn't have anything of the sort. So I quit out.

2) Playing solo. Lots of figuring out what I'm doing, where I'm going, and trying to help keep the Vanu from being pushed back. Definitely died more than I killed, but by the end of the night I was getting the hang of it.

3) Playing in a Squad. Lots of team killing with vehicles, trying to get to the squad waypoint, lots of vehicular bombardments, and most of all lots of dropping into small installations, taking over, then heading out. Also lots of "where did everyone go?"

It's been interesting, but it feels like the large battles have become the minimum of my experience thus far. The first Planetside's set up (that I remember) was one main installation surrounded by a couple smaller installations with spawn points, which allowed for a fight for a primary location to last a while and even go back and forth. The current set-up seems to focus more on small skirmishes, and if you die then you'll have to travel anywhere from 200 to 600 meters just to get back into the fight unless you're defending (and if your spawn point is taken, good luck getting back to the battle in a timely fashion).

Granted this is only from two nights of play, but while the game is solid in a lot of ways, I'm not completely seeing the infrastructure for some of my favorite memories. Namely, a two hour battle that lasted at a single location.

That said, I'll still be playing.

On the topic of things like the Galaxy colors and such:

The mini-map needs to have more indication of where your squad is when they're off the mini-map. If you guys weren't in the immediate vicinity I didn't know where you were at all.

In fact, I should probably post that feedback to their forums instead of this one.

That was a blast last night. Thanks to everyone that showed up. We had a nice squad of about 9 people consisting of me, Bear, Certis, Rabbit, Ccesarano, OldMud, Mayfield, gains and Zoa. It got laggy at times of course, but those Galaxy runs were the best I've had in a month.

Come back for some more!

There is a tiny, tiny, checkbox in the bottom right of the map screen that will get your squaddies to show up on the overworld map. I agree that the minimap does need a similar indicator but one that can be turned on and off. If the squad splits up you could be following the arrow for that lone guy who got lost (me) instead of the Gal full of your assault force.

Thanks for the outfit invite. It's a shame I had to bail out so soon, but I look forward to next time.
Also I knew the east coast servers had more lag then west, always seemed odd given I’m on the east coast.

Tawrich Tech Plant tip: In the back of the Main Spawn Base there is a teleporter. This takes you into the central tower building (where cap points F & G are located, and the vehicle spawn consoles), on the first floor, and near two teleporters (one to the left, one to the right). These teleporters take you up to the top floor, where the 2 Scythe/Liberator terminals flank the Galaxy terminal.

When I'm feeling lazy, I'll take my AA MAX to the top of the Tawrich main tower, and potshot at enemy air. The teleporters give me (relatively) quick access to more ammo, and this is a great base to idle at too. Unless TR grabs the surrounding territory, it just ends up being a fairly quick cap cycle, and since the resource it generates Auraxium, you effectively double your income earned by being there. Each cap cycle is 500 exp (plus whatever is earned by fighting, and recapping control points), and since you get 1 resource (auraxium in the case of this base) per 25 exp earned, that's 20 auraxium per cap cycle minimum.

I may try one of the West coast servers tonight. I'd rather play with less unlocks and no warping! Last night's hitching was so bad it was making the game unplayable.

Also, more updates!

The first change is that weapons are being retuned for slightly longer engagements. This is a bunch of small changes on each weapon and I can’t list out everything, but the major change that almost every weapon will share is less accuracy loss over sustained fire. This mainly means that your cone of fire will bloom out slower when you’re holding the trigger down.

A bigger change is revised recoil patterns on each weapon. We want all players to be able to learn the weapons and get better with them over time so we’re working hard to give each weapon its own pattern and handling characteristics. This means that you’re going to see some shifts in how some of your current weapons feel and it will take some getting used to. As examples, a gun that recoiled straight up before might pull to the right now, or a gun that was fairly steady might have more horizontal recoil.

And a hilarious comment from Higby on Warpgates:

Another warpgate rotation incoming on beta this week... we'll see how the TR do out in the seabed!

So I should hopefully be able to stand a better chance against someone 100 feet away trying to snipe a moving target.

So has the lag gotten any better? Couple weeks ago i jumped in and was caught in a unfun base raping. With the lag being so bad it made it impossible to even try and fight back. I've not logged back on since.

It's ok at times but it should hopefully be fixed this week with server updates on East.

I created BearGWJ on West 3. That's where I'll be till the East issues fixed.

FYI, picked #3 because it had the better pop. balance.

I have a beta key if anyone wants it. First PM gets it.

[Edit:] Key gone.

Just got my extra beta key. First non-Grinder (sorry!) PM will get it.

Heading out for a run, so will check when I get back.

Edit: Gone.

PM sent.

That was fun grouping up today, let's do it again. More people though

Next time I'll be sober, I promise.

But I'll still crash whatever plane you tell me to fly.

Heh, I almost logged in but then remembered that I had had two rum and cokes already and opted for Guild Wars. Less call for precision with that game. This weekend however, I hope to exercise the manifest destiny of the Vanu.

I gotta try to play with you guys tonight if anyone is gonna be on. I played a little bit last night and I think the game has a lot of potential. Its still rough in a lot of places but I still enjoyed myself once I got the hang of it. I mostly just tried to follow people around but I'd love to see how it plays with a team

Those patches sound great and the East server was running like a champ after they did something last night.

Unfortunately, the patch introduced more than they wanted. Trying to just log in crashes most of the time. And those that manage to log in are reporting even more crashes. Supposedly a fix should roll out soonish.

I'm seeing some changes in this patch that I expect will rolled right back out. The increased resource cost of the items coupled with the no heal from equipment terminals, on top of the removal of many equipment terminals from most of the world (previous patch) will combine to make a painful game. Can't see that staying that way, though. The game already has too much down time as it is.

In the meantime, medics and engineers (who remember to actually drop ammo) will be badly needed. A dedicated designated ammopeon and pocketcleric aren't exactly what I consider fun classes to play, so I expect to see change to the change to the change happen soon.

Heh. Command Rank 2 isn't in game yet, Command Rank 3 is. For a mere 500 cert points you too can get access to an ubah 3733t command channel. Which I'm guessing is a seperate chat which shows up for your squad/platoon, maybe in a special color. Or possibly what they had in PS1, a continent wide chat restricted to those that spent the 500 certs.

500 certs for a separate channel?

Thats kind of insane for something for minor.

it's hard enough to find an equip terminal! They need to make those icons larger.

If they want to test the game why are they setting the costs for this stuff so absurdly high?

Well there is supposed to be only a few commanders from what I understand. I think the price makes sense, in the way anyone who you'd want to play as a commander should have a crazy amount of points anyway.

It appears the most Auraxium you can get is 25k. Once you hit that limit, might as well spend some of it.

I remember how much better the organisation of the teams were in PS1 when there was a real commander on the field... and because they had to really work to get it most of them tended to be quite good at the tactics from what I remember. Maybe they wanted a similar situation in PS2 whereby not every Tom, Dick and Harry was drawing penises on the world map for their troops to spurt out of...
