Wii U Catch-All

You wound me, sir. WOUND ME.

They should have had this bundle from the start, eh?

In the meantime, they should just delete that stupid basic set SKU altogether.

How the heck is that going to stack up against a bundle with a game and accessories that should be included anyway (plastic stand-ly bits) and a bundle with two games and said accessories an extra controller? Between the extra production costs (white console with less memory vs. black with more) and retailers stuck with basic set inventory they'll have to sell at a reduced price, I'm left scratching my head. It's technically not a price cut, right?

(Don't mistake this as doom-and-gloom. It's strictly "WTF?")

Thanks for the reminder on the MH demo. Something to look forward to there for sure.

Am I crazy for thinking this looks pretty cool? Aside from the occasionally cringe-worthy dialogue.

I haven't cared much for the licensed Lego games, but from what I've read this is a true open-world game and that pretty much addresses my issue with TT's work.

Also for anyone interested in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (crosspost):

Capcom's been having "Monster Hunter Mondays" livestreams featuring Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the past couple weeks. Link to their twitch.tv page, the videos are listed at the bottom. Friendly reminder: the demos will be available on Wii U and 3DS next Tuesday Thursday.

LOL "Waffles?! What are we doing?!"

LEGO City Undercover looks way better than I thought it would be...

Rayman Legends developers are camping out in front of Ubisoft's Montpellier office trying to get the game released for Wii-U ASAP. There's also apparently a Facebook movement full of people randomly commenting on Ubisoft's page to release the game.

I'd gladly take a Rayman Legends insta-release in exchange for an increased delay in the Heroes VI expansion. Everyone in the Heroes community is more than willing to wait for the devs to not have to patch the game a gazillion times before it's actually playable.

It's a little nuts that the game is done and not being released. Isn't it usually the other way around?

Yup. I sure hope it's actually rock solid if they do get it released now. Won't look good if it's buggy.

I don’t think you're crazy at all. I’ve enjoyed playing the Lego games with my daughter and we're looking forward to this one. My daughter explained it like this to my wife "Lego City is like the games daddy plays, but I can play it." So yea a Saints Row the 3 but with Legos.

Your daughter has the perfect sales pitch to mom right there... brilliant!

It's a bit of a Chicken or the Egg thing, but since the delay announcement I've wondered if the game got pushed so the Wii U install base could grow more before release. Like it has less to do with the 360/PS3 port and more to do with Wii U sales potential.

There were some horrific numbers coming out of the last NPD cycle stating that for 3rd party Wii U software, the only title to break the 100,000 units sold barrier worldwide was ZombiU.

That's gotta scare the pants of any publisher with heavy resources invested in the system.

Chicken or the egg is right, as the lack of titles like Rayman Legends could prevent more systems from selling. Hell, it may even prevent the game from selling since people will wonder what's wrong with it if Ubisoft didn't want to risk releasing it on just one platform.

It is something that has actually got me scratching my head in terms of the upcoming next generation in general. If publishers require games to sell up to five million to be worthwhile franchises, then how do you expect to have a hit in the launch window of a console? There's no way you're going to have enough of a user base to guarantee a multi-million seller hit. I know a lot of people want to strike Halo-style gold, but the likelihood is...well, unlikely, unless you have something as safe and wide-appealing as Mario.

To me, when the userbase is smaller seems to be the best time to establish a franchise, but that's long-term thinking. And considering the cost of developing games, long-term thinking may ultimately lead to bankruptcy rather than long-term success.

How do you take a Rayman hostage? He has no arms or legs to bind.

Blind_Evil wrote:

I don't think anyone here played it.

I've played it. I played the first one on the PC and it plays just fine on the Wii U. The Wii U gamepad stuff isn't really needed but it also doesn't take away from the game. For $30, I think it's totally worth it. I'm looking forward to the Amazing Spider-Man $30 port in March.

I think Ubi Soft should do a soft launch of Rayman via the eShop store. They don't have to produce any physical copies and it allows people who really want to play the game now, to do so.

That's a great way of incurring the wrath of brick & mortar.

The game is launching in September. Brick & Mortar isn't going to be throwing any support to it. I still think it should launch with a physical disc but do that with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Let Wii U owners who really want the game today, buy it. Don't do any marketing, just do it grass roots with "here it is guys, buy it" and then do a full scale launch later.

So, considering he's asking if the Wii U stuff adds enough to double dip, I don't think Spider_J should buy Batman: AC twice. I've also heard the frame-rate is rough.

I wasn't saying he should. I was just replying in general that I've played it and for $30 I think it's worth a pick up. I haven't had any problems with the frame-rate.

... and for those people who don't have their Wii U hooked up to the Internet, then what?

I get where you're coming from, but the logic behind their decision is the same logic which prevents Steam/Blizzard from playing a game you pre-loaded before a specified date and time.

I'm of the mind "f*ck retail". I want Rayman now. There is a drought now. There isn't going to be a drought come September.

As an aside, I read today over on Polygon (the comments to the story about the protest) that the Wii had the best selling version of Rayman Origins. Release the damn game, Ubi Soft! I want to give you $60. In September, I'll give my $60 to Nintendo for Zelda. I'll buy Rayman at some point but I'll wait for another drought.

Didn't the Wii U see 70% or something of users connected to the internet? I thought it was one of those stats that Iwata talked about. That's a pretty good ratio. Besides, if you didn't connect to the internet you wouldn't have the day one system update. Which makes that 70% number seem kind of low, actually...

re: Rayman - The kicker for me is that I have the game pre-ordered, and because it's part of a larger order, part of which has shipped, I can't cancel it anymore... So if it came out on eShop I'd have two copies of it.

FTFY

Right now you can't do anything to piss off retail if you are Nintendo. They NEED brick and mortar stores to feature the WiiU in displays and dedicate prime shelf space in order to move consoles. They already alienated Amazon, which has been the second largest mover of hardware behind Walmart for quite awhile now. If the other two consoles release this fall, retailers are going to have to make hard choices regarding placement and shelf space of the various systems. You NEED retailers to keep WiiU kiosks in place and up and running and to devote end caps and shelf space to move hardware.

Look at the Vita now, most places have either completely removed the demo device or it sits unpowered and scratched to hell. The Vita "section" is gone and instead consists of a few titles thrown in the same case as the PS3 games.

Right now, the Skylanders display and section is actually larger and more prominent than the WiiU in most of my local stores. What will it look like after the launch of two more consoles if Nintendo alienates retailers?

Ubisoft isn't going to only release it digitally, so the entire foundation of the conversation is shaky. Even if they did, I don't think retailers could justify blaming the platform holder for one third party's actions.

I know that Ubisoft isn't actually going to do it, and they shouldn't. I'm just responding to the idea that Nintendo can essentially say "f*ck retailers" and allow third parties to start releasing full games only in a digital format.

Jasonofindy wrote:

You can't do it if you're MS or Sony either. Someone has to carry the razors if not the blades.

Maaaaan--just did the taxes last night and we are paying. A lot. I mean, a lot. Damn, I might not be able to get that ZombiU bundle right away now

Whereas I may be getting it as soon as Sunday since I already have my tax refund. We'll see how buying a couch goes.
