Wii U Catch-All

The Wii U launch is upon us. Will Nintendo catch lighting in a bottle again riding the new wave of tablet-playing enthusiasts? Or are they barking up the wrong tree?

Deluxe Version vs. Regular

Games list

My future Nintendo Network ID is still up in the air, as is the second game I'll be buying in addition to NBA 2k13. I'm having a very hard time deciding between Scribblenauts Unlimited and New Super Mario Bros. U.

Should I use this post to curate a list of NNIDs? Or will we be using the standard, "post it in the game thread" technique? I get the feeling this community won't have too many Wii U owners.

I've added a Wii U account name field to user accounts. Those will show up here.

Can anyone confirm that you must have the wiiu in your possession to transfer wii virtual titles? So I can't trade in wii for wiiu without losing them?

I've been wondering the same. The Wii U Transfer Tool on the Wii says that you need the SD card, the target Wii U, and the Wii needs to be connected to the internet, so I'd hold on to the old system until you've transferred.

It'd be nice if you could just throw it all on the SD card and trade it in when you buy the new one, but eh. It's just one extra trip to wherever you're selling it.

I'll be picking up my Wii U monday.

I really don't know if I'll regret buying it but I have enough store credit to buy one.

We'll see soon enough

What are the games to get?

Nintendo Land?
ZombiU?
New Super Mario WiiU?

anything else?

By most accounts those three are good to great, along with Super Scribblenauts. I'm getting NBA 2k13, but not a lot of people on this site are into sports games. The multiplatform games like Darksiders 2 and Assassin's Creed 3 are good if you haven't played them elsewhere yet, but I have. Mass Effect 3 and Batman seem like raw deals considering you can get both for half the price on other platforms by now.

Polygon.com has a review of the system up, complete with a number score, and I find it...well, a little dumb on principle. They gave it a 6.5. With 28 games available on day one, including some of the biggest multiplatform hits of the year, I can't help but question the context of the review. For example, the Nintendo 64 released with two games. In retrospect, what score does that merit? How about the PS2? It took about 8 months for the first good PS2 games to start arriving.

I think numbered game scores work well because you have so much to compare against. You see two or three new consoles every six years, and that bar doesn't get established often enough to empirically measure quality, IMO. It really seems like click-bait to me, which I guess is their job. To give my review of their review some context, the bottom line on Kotaku's review seems a lot smarter: Is the Wii U a must-buy? Not yet.

Also, PSA: Don't shut off your Wii U during the firmware update. I would think this is common sense, but the word "bricked" is already being thrown around.

Any word on transferring data from 2 different Wiis to the same Wii U? My fiance and I are trying to consolidate our gaming systems...

Sure, there are a TON of launch games, but it seems Polygon is making the argument for quality over quantity. Not in the sense that 5 games would've been better than 23, but that the vast majority of the games were not designed for the system and don't effectively use it.

They said they'll update the review over time and while putting a score on a system is rather silly, it's what they do at that site. I'm not seeing baiting here, but a team of people not sure with what they have in front of them. It's a day 1 review of what they have, which included no online and (as they stated) inferior versions of some existing titles. The individual game reviews will probably better justify the system than the system review.

Ok, Thanks to you and Blind_evil for confirming that. Personally I think it's BS and a stab at the used market since retailers give you more credit when trading the wii at the time of wiiu purchase but I'll ask them if I can agree to it and bring it in later, or do the transfer in the store...

You can, but it sounds like the Wii saves aren't attached to user accounts. If you have the same games, it'll overwrite the existing saves with the data from the latest transfer. Demyx and I are in a similar situation, so I'll update this thread with my findings once our Wii U arrives.

In the meantime, I'm terrified of transferring anything in case something gets screwed up.

Is it just me, or is it a little ridiculous that so much attention is being given to the fact that they were late with the firmware upgrade? I mean, yeah, it's disappointing to the people that get it at launch. But a thing that gets cleared up in a couple days for a console that's presumably expected to be around for years? It's just not that important.

Controversy drives clicks in the enthusiast press unfortunately.

I think it's more that the journos had a deadline to hit and they couldn't do their job fully since Nintendo was late. Especially when the firmware popped up 5 hours before the embargo expired.

Slapping a score on it this early is a bit silly though. Much preferred Ars' handling by just saying Verdict: Incomplete.

Watching Giant Bomb's quick look of ZombiU. Unfortunately, online functionality wasn't available when they recorded but based on the gameplay they showed and what the online is supposed to offer, this looks kind of like Zombie Dark Souls which I find very intriguing.

Yeah, ZombiU looks really slow-paced and methodical, which is awesome. Also love the camera lens dirt effect when you look at light sources.

The fact that Epic Mickey 2 is getting worse reviews than the last one fills me with deep sadness.

But it's coming anyway. I will play it. For science.

System in hand, updating now. Gives me time to do laundry and clean up.

I had NSMBU preordered, but got suckered into buying ZombiU (leaving that one in the shrink wrap until I see more impressions).

I also had NBA 2k13 preordered, but the Gamestop guy (store manager!) said they moved the street date to 12/4. I went to the Best Buy next door and they had dozens.

It's looking to me like the 2 hour update is going to take around 40 minutes. I started it 8 minutes ago and the bar's about 1/5 complete. Granted, I do have pretty fast connection speeds, but the people complaining about it have faster.

Watching all three new QLs on Giant Bomb, I took this away - for all Jeff's grousing everyone sounded like they were having a lot of fun. I can't wait to play some of that Luigi's Mansion attraction with some people.

Anyone else that got/is getting the Deluxe: I'd maybe hold off on digital purchases. Nintendo's page about the promotion says "Coming Dec 2012!" And now that I think about it, I remember them saying something like that a while ago.

Edit: whoop, nevermind. "The DDP site launches in December but you will accumulate the points for any purchases made on or after November 18th."

Noted, Blind_Evil, and thanks. I've been sitting on a gift card that I plan on using for a smattering of eShop purchases. Good to know I can wait just a little while and likely get more mileage out of it.

EDIT: That works, too.

Picked up my Deluxe this morning. It took 40 minutes to download the update (8-10mb dl) and another 10 minutes for it to install, then another 10-15 minutes to tweak settings, etc.

It's a nice little system. Looks good and the display is very sharp. I'm about to crank up some Mario right now. I have AC3, Darksiders 2, and ZombiU in the floor for later. Looking forward to jumping into all of them.

BTW, waiting on a day-one patch for Mario is a kind of strange experience on a Nintendo console.

I've got my hands on a Deluxe edition after a bit of driving. Got Nintendo Land, New Mario and ZombieU to check out. Looking forward to it! I'll post some impression once this system update is done downloading sometime in 2013.

About updating: Don't trade your Wii I against the Wii U if you have DLC. It is coded to the console, not the owner, and Nintendo will not let you have it back. I fell foul of this idiocy when I got my 3DS XL, and the manager I spoke to at Nintendo told that the policy was the same for the Wii. He said that it was not going to change until Wii U, so the content on your Wii can only be used on there until transferred. Hopefully, transferring it to Wii U will code those games to a profile, but I wouldn't count on it, since the Wii U emulates the Wii in it's entirety, including the dashboard.

Incidentally, Pikmin carry the data across with the 3DS transfer as well. Looks good, but takes way too long, even for a tiny amount of data.

I demand system/game impressions!

For those that have picked one up: How is the backwards compatibility? Any idea if the old games run at a higher resolution, or do they just run at 480p?

Nintendo's official statements in the past were Wii games will/can not be up-ressed.

It's hardware emulation so there won't be any differences.

Um, here ya go. All I've played so far!

I ran through the first two levels of Mario. It really is gorgeous in HD. It is a small thing, but when I shot my first fireball in a dark area and it emitted light effects as it traveled I got a stupid smile on my face.

I've only played two levels, but they feel much more old school than the Wii or 3D versions. There are lots of hidden areas that fit pretty organically in the levels. Also, I felt that the Wii version's jumping mechanics and weight were a bit "off", but the WiiU version feels just right so far. I'm not sold on the bat suit yet. I hope the tanooki suit shows up later.

Also, it was quite nice to switch the TV over to the NFL game while I continued to play Mario on the tablet. That may end up being one of the best features of the system for me.
