Dark Souls Catch-All

Are you a Transformer?

If you're really buying it just for this game, the clear answer is a PS3 so you can also play Demon's Souls

I'd agree. You might want to hold off and see if there's any real difference between the two. I imagine the PS3 was the lead platform considering DS didn't come out on the 360.

I haven't seen any reviews really delve into it, but pre-release buzz indicates that the 360 version has some performance hitches that the PS3 version doesn't. Disappointing to me, but hey, at least I get to play it. That's better than nothing!

I'm just glad I won't be a lone voice in the wilderness playing this like I was when I imported Demon's Souls. Everyone thought I was mad I tell you, MAD!

Paid off my pre-order today, probably picking it up Tuesday.

Looks like the wiki is starting to get updated.

Browsing character classes and stats today, just trying to decide what to start with tomorrow.

Despite the limitations on magic, I'm still thinking Sorcerer with Soul Arrow might be fun and familiar.

Not much information up about Miracles yet, so not sure if the Cleric is viable besides having the basic heal. It lists a couple of attack miracles but no info on charges or what the deal is.

I'm so glad they did that. Magic spam was a poor way to learn the DS.

100% agreed. It was also much less satisfying. Beat the tower knight with soul arrow spam. Now try beating him by hacking at his ankles and bringing him to his knees while dodging his spear thrusts, shield slams, and boot stomps. The true Demon's Souls starts here

I dunno. I enjoyed 1-shotting each Maneater with Firestorm in NG+ last night.

Ugh. I actually gave up on Maneater, I couldn't do it.

This is the downside to having things delivered to my office - I'm sick, and not sure if I'll be able to pick this up tomorrow. Sad times.

As much fun as blowing things away with the high end spells is, I found it much more rewarding to learn how to fight in melee combat. Taking down a Red-Eye Knight, or even the Old King, with a 2-handed spear, dodges, and counterattacks was pure adrenaline and enjoyment.

Any word on platform preference?

I've got the option for either 360 or PS3.

PS3 is the general buzz so far. But it's also possible you won't get the collector's edition for that platform if you pre-order today. Perhaps sold out already.

Only way to find out is to order it though. Gamestop usually solidifies their numbers on Sun though. So you might have to go online somewhere else to preorder to still get it tomorrow.

Or try your luck at Walmart tonight at midnight.

EDIT: I still don't comprehend how they're separating pre-orders from first-run copies as far as the CE goes? Amazon and Best Buy are the only places that have a separate item. Everywhere else it's just assumed that pre-order is the CE, but I don't know how they're handling it if they run out of CE copies? It almost seems like they would have to ship a few extras, especially somewhere like Gamestop where you can technically still pre-order today, but they would then need extra CE copies over what they already ordered.

I think we're looking at a 60-40 PS3-Xbox Split, with the PS favored because of the Demon souls built in audience. That said, I'm going Xbox. Not that it matters with essentially random Multiplayer!

Actually, I think I phrased that poorly.

I was thinking more of a technical stanpoint. If one platform runs/looks better than the other.

I haven't seen anything definitive, but I would think that in this case the PS3 version would be the safer bet unless you have a strong preference for one controller or the other.

If it were an Unreal Engine game, the 360 would be the safe bet as they usually end up either nearly identical or a bit better on the 360; ditto if it were a game using the GTAIV engine. Since the game is being made by From Software, its predecessor was a PS3 exclusive, and there is no 360 port in Japan, I'm betting my money that the games will be either identical or the PS3 version will be a bit better.

Some early reports are saying there seems to be more slowdown on the 360 version.

At this point it's hard to separate the fanboyism from facts though.

I believe we had an article a couple pages back about some of it. The one thing mentioned was that From Software programmed the game for PS3 and then another company was outsourced to port it over to 360. So, in most cases, the lead platform is going to be somewhere between slightly and greatly better than the ported version.

Great Eurogamer review went up today, and they seemed to love it:

I didn't stumble over any spoilers, and it's really nicely written as usual.

It is unfortunate that this seems to almost always be the case. It sucks that it is difficult to find reliable information because of all of the fanboy claims and counterclaims of console superiority. As someone who has owned both platforms since launch and really doesn't give a damn which platform "wins," it would be really nice if this sort of information was reliably available for multiplatform releases. Thankfully, with only a few exceptions it hasn't mattered much for the past couple of years. However, I will admit that I have felt burned that I picked up the "wrong" version a couple of times.

As soon as you leave the tutorial area, enemies hit hard. Combine this with a stringent new health system, some mean enemy placement and a positively brutal first 'proper' boss and the first few hours of Dark Souls represent a vindictive difficulty spike which many will never surmount.

Sounds fun.

Dark Souls probably won’t be the biggest or best game released this year, but I’m already sure it’s the one I’m going to spend the most time playing.

I absolutely loathe the way this sentence starts. I hate when reviewers assume things about games. I also hate when things are happening in the world and everyone is saying how it's history in the making. Can't things just be what they are? Ugh.

From this review.

Not to mention it's defeatist towards the game. Demon's Souls did well enough to be a greatest hit. Why act like Dark Souls is some obscure underdog here?

You make it sound like we've changed our minds.

So, if I'm the type of person that usually despise boss fights I guess I should stay the hell away from this game right? The problem is that the enabling around this franchise is so hard to resist...

I wouldn't say you should get Dark Souls, but at this point you should be able to get DS's on the cheap. Worth a shot. You never know if it's for you or not. For me, it's like coming home. It all just felt so right.

Hm. My release day delivery copy from Amazon still doesn't show as shipped, though the expected delivery date is still listed as tomorrow.

I'm sure it'll be here, but I will be annoyed if it doesn't!

This happened to me with Space Marine, I got the game 3 days late or so. Amazon refunded me something like 5 bucks for the trouble..

Still haven't got my notice either. But last week with ICO/SotC it was somewhere around 8 or 9 eastern. A lot of times the e-mail trails the actual shipment too. Don't despair until it gets to like midnight eastern and you don't have tracking. Because at that point UPS should be on it's way to Louisville to get sorted.

So far have never got a release-day delivery late from Amazon. Hope they keep that up.

Just got this:
