Dark Souls Catch-All

I think DS1 is one of the greatest games of all time, so it's tough to expect even its sequels to measure up.

Truer words have not been said.

Considering how often people's favorite Souls game is their first I think it lends credence to the opinion they're all pretty great and just different enough to have their own identity. I think that's pretty neat.

This is a pretty fair assessment. I played Demon's Souls first, but my preferred game is Dark Souls, so I guess I'm just off the map entirely

Naw... Dark Souls 1 is clearly the superior game

So far, it's still my favourite. I've completed 1 (see my Twitch for lame VODs of me being terrible). I "completed" DS2 - sat on the throne. Scratched a little at the DLC, but haven't felt compelled to return, nothing like how I HAD to go back, like I was with DS1...

DS3 will wait until a "Prepare to Die" style edition comes out, for it.

Putting aside its very obvious rough edges, DS1 is the only one of the 3 games where it is fairly uncontroversial that the main pillars of the design (world, story, combat) all work correctly and come together to form a fully functioning whole. The other 2 games are great but at least one of those 2 either doesn't work or makes no sense.

I think this is the simplest way of really saying why ds1 is my favorite.

Yes, I'm a your first souls is your favourite souls guy (ds2 for me). Plus the fact that I played on a pc with a m/KB makes ds1 despite its greatness a flawed masterpiece.

Anyone who likes DS2 best is definitely exemplifying this theory!

That said, 2 has grown on me. It still feels like a wildly different take on the same formula, and reflects the different director.

I think people that play 2 first perpetuate this theory to defend their obvious lack of taste.

You guys!

I guess I'm an exception to the first souls game rule. I first tried Demon's, loved it, didn't beat it, though (wasn't my copy). Got Dark Souls and plowed through it, then went back to Demon's (a copy of my own) and finally conquered it. Did the soulsborne tango with all games up to date barring the upcoming dlc, and here we are, today, with Dark Souls II still being my favorite.

Dark Souls is my first Souls game, but my favorite (and the objective best in every way ) is Bloodborne.

I played ds1 first but bounced off it. I found DS2 a bit more approachable and it was a better entry point for me into the series. After beating DS2, I went back and played DS1, and loved it (I've done 3 playthroughs and feel like I find something new every time). Having done multiple playthroughs of all the DS games, I will say DS1 is hands down my favorite, but I do still have a soft spot for DS2

Heretic!

I used to be firmly in the "DS1 is the greatest camp" and it was indeed the first one I played but my SL1 and 100% achievements runs taught me that DS2 is just as good, it's just different and off on its own little spur.

Once the 2nd DS3 DLC is out I'll get round to an SL1 run of that and see if my mind changes there but for now it feels like the prettier but not as smart cousin to the other two

Dark Souls was always by far my favorite in the series.

But having recently replayed Bloodborne for various reasons I think that it is certainly a strong second, and may have pulled even with the champ on the basis of its clearly superior combat engine.

Dark Souls still gets the prize for being first though.

Dark Souls - the game that made me buy a 360 controller + wireless dongle, AND stream.

THAT'S something!

Every Souls game is the best souls game.
They each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

While I would rate DS1 at top if I had to, due to the amazingly interconnected world that none of the other games have managed, it isn't like it was simply perfect in every way. It had a few late zones that felt very rushed for example.

DS1 > DS2 > DS3 > DeS > Bloodborne.
DeS was first.

Heretic #2! How dare you besmirch the hallowed name of almighty Bloodborne. Be gone, foul beast!

Nearly non-existent build diversity! Some of the best world design though.
Build diversity is super important imo. A reason why I liked DS2 so much.

Aka. don't take mah shields and fireballs away.

Me too at the moment, plus Bloodborne is the only one I've finished. Will restart DS1 once I get BB platinum I think.

Bloodborne is my favorite too.

Started with Dark Souls. I bought two copies, one for me and my buddy. I hated it, got frustrated and quit. While my buddy loved it and eventually beaten it.

Fast track to Bloodborne. Hey, why not, looks really cool. Same buddy and I got it. Frustrated, pissed off but something clicked and I beat it and loved every second of it past that frustration part. I couldn't get enough that I bought Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin. Really liked it, played probably half of it but just got distracted and never finished it. I think the Witcher 3 came out. Anyways, Dark Souls 3 came out the following year, while I waited, I played Dark Souls 2 again for a few hours. Beat Dark Souls 3 and loved it.

Now we got Nioh. Fun so far. I can't wait for Dark Souls 4 or Bloodborne 2. I will go back and beat 1, 2, and Demon's Souls!

Didn't Miyazaki say that DS3 was going to be From's final Souls/Bloodborne series game?

Do cash cows moo in the woods?

They said it was their last Dark Soul game - not necessarily last Souls-like I believe, though probably for a while. Where is EA/Activision to buyout developers and force them to make sequels when you finally need them!

He actually said it finishes the Souls series for now. I expect more in the future. AFAIK FROM has no officially announced games right now, and are just about wrapped up on DLC for existing games, so I'm hoping for new info at E3. They've said they have several games in progress, and I believe this will be the first Spring in a while without a launch from them.

In which Miyazaki says he's done with Dark Souls but they might still make them, and says they're working on an Armored Core game, among others.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Bloodborne falls outside of that "Souls series" statement and we end up with a Bloodborne 2 announcement around E3, perhaps without Miyazaki at the helm.

I didn't rekindle the Flame at the end of DS1, so... that's it, no more Dark Souls... it's canon! lalalalaicanthearyouuuu

Arg Manus is giving me a hard time but not really. He just kills me when I have him down to nothing. He gets in like two lucky hits and I'm dead or a third that seems like he was out of my hit box but no eff you dark souls. Needed to vent. Just lost the souls and humanity to that scobwobble sorcerer on the way down. I rounded the corner and somehow that time he heard me coming and blasted me with a one shot big dark magic ball.

I tried once more after that but I could tell I was playing angry souls and my rolling was all off kilter. He isn't that hard it's just those last few hits. I've been summoning sif less for help but because I wanted a cut scene if any, this is my first time through the DLC. But man that wolf is useless. Artorias should have used him as a shield and sacrificed it to the abyss.

OK rant over. I'll get him. Just had a rough go.
