Dark Souls Catch-All

I've been led to believe that there's supposed to be a Golden Crystal Golem or some such beast waiting for me beyond where I recently defeated the Hydra. But when I go there it's just an empty watery corner. Nothing at all of interest besides a bunch of orange soapstone notes warning "beware of fatty" and such. The wiki has no mention of conditions that would cause him to not appear, so I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

You have to have access to the Duke's Archives via completing Anor Londo.

You only need to do that for the DLC, the golem should appear the next time you load after beating the hydra in all cases.

I'm pretty sure you must also be in human form.

When I beat the Hydra this time, there was no golem, so I reloaded and then voila.

Hm, very odd that reloading wasn't mentioned in the wiki. I'll go give him the business tomorrow evening, then.

It is mentioned in at least one of the wikis, I just had to check it for my brother recently.

Okay so demon firesage and centipede are officially cheesy easy fights. Solo'd both, firesage took 4 tries while I figured out the range of his butt smash, and centipede only took 2 tries. Same goes for ceaseless discharge, that one I got first try. Catacombs have me annoyed right now, though I expect I'll power through that this evening. I just need to get my bearings a little bit. I did get as far as the Dark Seance Ring, but then I got destroyed by 3 wheel skeletons.

Your experience with the Ceaseless Discharge is completely different than mine. I got hammered many times and found spots where the game was effectively broken in the map.

Interesting. I found smashing his tentacles pretty simple, even though I took a lot of hits. It took me something like 7 flasks, but was ultimately very easy.

Yeah, I just chose the wrong spot to stand my ground, and would get 1 shotted if it hit just right, and sometimes even if it visually didn't connect.

Also just noticed that you're having troubles in the catacombs, which I mostly breezed through on my way to rolling Nito my first try.

I wouldn't say having trouble really, just using a crappy weapon and muddling through without reading any guides really. I almost made it to the smith, but fell to my death, and went a different way the next time.

Just find something to 1-shot them. Claymore +14 did it for me. Yeah, the first time I made it to the smith I dropped in on him. I eventually found the other way down, but that's been my primary means down. The hardest part of the whole thing was the journey to the first bonfire in tomb of the giants since it's off to the side and down a ladder and I missed it the first time I passed it and somehow didn't rest at it the next time, but thought I did.

It's in this wiki, the only true wiki for the game. In fact it's mentioned multiple times. Also, I did tell you that reloading would get it to spawn.

While Fire Emblem was downloading last night, I carved a bit out of the Duke's Archives. I really don't enjoy that area much. It's not difficult, it's just annoying, especially the Pisacas in the prison. I died once after turning off the gramophone, so there are a dozen of them sitting right outside the cell, and I have to pull them one at a time so I don't get mobbed. Ugh.

I find the different wikis useful for different things. Specifically, the wikispaces one has better walkthrough information, and wikidot has better technical information.

Ah ok. I only go to wikidot because I already know the game backwards and forwards, plus I have the hardcover guide (so awesome!), so walkthrough info isn't very useful to me, but the technical data is very valuable.

BTW, if you want good maps, the hardcover guide is where it's at. Seriously good maps for every zone except the DLC (duh), highly recommended if it's still available.

Or if you need one I could probably sell mine. I didn't use it at all this last time around, so I guess I know where stuff is at now.

It's in great shape except for one little nick on the corner of the cover where my cat started nibbling. I swear he thinks he's a dog.

I'd describe it as "very good" instead of "like new" just because of that.

How much?

Ah, that's good to know. I remember that the various wikis had been brought up previously but never saw a useful consensus to be drawn from the conversation. I had been loosely following the wikispaces walkthrough bits, which simply said to "walk over and check out that golden golem after you take care of the hydra, he's a real bro" but not in those words. I guess I'll have to cross reference a bit more.

Wow didn't realize they were out of print. It looks like Amazon has used copies starting at $45 with shipping and ebay has listings selling between $20-50 from the last month or so.

Seems like $35 with shipping might be a reasonable price? You might get an ebay auction cheaper but that's a guaranteed sale, and you can see the quality before you buy. I'll grab a picture this evening to show you the little nick and decide if that sounds cool. Should probably discuss the rest in PMs. If you decide you don't want it I'll open it up to someone else I guess.

I love the book and used it extensively for the first 3 runs of the game. But I've probably hung up my Dark Souls gaming for a while at this point, so it would be great if someone else gets some use out of it.

Well, I'll save you the hassle with me at least, I don't feel it would be something I can justify at this point. That's a great price offering, though.

I have enticed my wife to play Dark Souls. She has never played Demon's Souls, and her gaming resume includes KoBraMUD, Diablo II, and WoW. She has played 3 short sessions (around 1.5 hours a piece) and is level 16, just before fighting the gargoyles. Today, for the first time, she began cursing at an npc (one of the rapier guys with a buckler) for killing her repeatedly. This is a good thing.

Does anyone have any experience with the Titanite Catch Pole.

If by "experience", you mean, "getting smashed in the face repeatedly with it", then yes!
But I am not sure I ever even got that as a drop.

I got it last night from the respawning Titanite Demon in the Izalith shortcut second time I killed him. It does quite a bit of damage with 50 int! But it scales D with str/dex/int. The move set seems pretty solid as well, I had no trouble killing the royal sentinels in Anor Londo with it, for example.

I have a Titanite Catch Pole on my dex character but beyond taking a few swings with it haven't really used it much. Same with the channeler trident. I wish those things would drop for my Int character but it seems unlikely.

You could give them to a friend and have the friend pass them on to your int character.. Though the catch pole seems like it would be equally good for strength, dex, or int characters.

Yeah. I got mine the first time I killed that prowling (titanite, whatever) demon. It looked interesting, but I just haven't given it a try. At the end of the day, if you can get results out of a weapon, that's what really matters so long as some other weapon won't do the same thing better / easier. This is why I love the claymore more than zwei. It just works better for me. It's also why I used the quelaag's furysword +5 while my claymore was stuck at +10 since I could do 7 swings with the furysword as opposed to 3 with the claymore meaning I could do 1000+ damage with a single stamina bar with the furysword vs 6-700 with the claymore. It also worked out I was using that a lot around the painted world and such, which fire is good there.

Definately whatever works is the answer, and yes, I like the claymore more than the zweihander. I do find, though, I take less damage playing with a heavier weapon, the lighter straight swords and such seem too weak. When I attack, I expose myself to counters and things I didn't expect, so I want the hits I land to really count.

Generally true, but low poise enemies are very susceptible to the multiple strikes of a straightsword. Or, like when I was surrounded by a few of the flying enemies in painted world, I was able to get in lots of quick hits where the claymore would have just been too slow. But, I was able to use the claymore to one shot things like the giant skeleton dogs when I 2-handed a jumping attack so they never get a chance to counter, or move, really.

For sure the heavier weapons can be a challenge sometimes, but as long as I have room to maneuver, I prefer fewer heavier strikes over many light attacks. I love how the game caters to virtually every playstyle.
