Dark Souls Catch-All

Are y'all on Xbox as well? That's where me, Solid, and (at the moment) DSG are playing.

I actually have no idea how the Gaping Dragon works. Hopefully helping out as a phantom a few times will help me learn the ropes and do it on my own, like I did with Capra.

Got my SunBro membership and a black knight sword last night. It's time to stop wussing around and put the Depths behind me.

The Gaping Dragon seems to be relatively "easy" if you have strong characters. It's just a matter of avoiding the attacks and chipping away at his health.

Probably more than "at the moment". I miss my Soul Arrows and I'm trying to figure out if I can level up a couple of stats and find the right weapon to use Soul Arrows again. Otherwise I really like my strength build so far. So much so that I just got the Drake Sword an hour or so ago and was rolling with a short sword.

The biggest problem I'm having with this type of character is that the Soul Arrow was a good crutch for dealing with tough enemies like the Black Knight. I've found myself, instead, using firebombs as a ranged weapon. Not sure if I'm missing something obvious, but those and arrows are all I have available to me that's worth anything.

Leveling up a bow is a very viable alternative to spells, especially if you're using fire or poison arrows.

Dangit... I only play on PS3!!

I'll be back on my PS3 game soon enough. I'm using the XBox game as a way to "practice" when my wife wants the TV (my 360 is connected to my computer monitor). So I'll be switching back and forth.

Oh right, there's different platforms at play here... I'm on PC (a steam sale beneficiary), so maybe I'll be able to have a go at the Depths and ol' Gapy with tuffalo once he builds up the nerve (and if the summoning ever actually works). At least my gold summoning sign will be easier to pick out now.

I plan on hitting The Depths tonight depending on how tired I am this evening.

I solo'ed the gaping dragon on my sorceror, just by staying away and casting spells. It took a while, but it wasn't too hard.

On my cleric, I went in with Solid and Solaire and we just tore the dude apart in under a minute. Dragons don't like lightning.

On my strength character, it took me three tries, even with Solaire and a random player each time. Apparently he's weak to lightning, but barely gives a damn about a strong attack from a Zweihander. Fortunately, on the third try, the other player had a lightning-enhanced weapon. Still, I was very surprised how hard the boss was when all you're doing is melee.

Weird, I had no trouble meleeing him with my Winged spear +7, although Solaire and my human buddy both died when he had about 40% health left. I will say, it helped to cut his tail off ASAP, as that removed the tail swipes.

He's very easy, even as melee, if you know the right times to attack, how to bait his charge, and you don't get too greedy with your attack openings.

Once you figure that stuff out, he is one of the easier boss fights in the game. It can take a few tries for those patterns to become apparent.

When I tried to solo-melee the gaping dragon, the hard part was avoiding being stepped on. In retrospect a spear would have been a great choice; the GD is too slow and large to miss with an attack and the extended reach would have put me safely away from his body.

Spoiler:

A spear might also help be prepared for the acid attack. That thing is rough if you forgot to repair your weapon.

I have also changed my mind again about my next character. I'll have a caster that uses couple of different spears, Enchanted +5 for most enemies, a Lightning +5 for enemies with magic resistance. I figure that using a spear will help me stay out of range for many melee attacks and allow me to spec my armor for incoming magic/fire/lightning attacks. I'm leaning towards the winged spear as it can be obtained so early in the game.

My spear got destroyed by the acid attack, I had to finish the fight with my Artoras' straight sword. I did zero research going into this fight lol.

What acid attack?

I've beat Gaping Dragon 15 times between PS3/PC, NG+ and ++ and helping other players as a phantom. Never seen an acid attack that damages weapons.

The winged spear is nice, but the damage is crap. I guess it would be fine once you upgrade it, but I have no idea how well it scales TBH.

I think it's the one that he spews all over the floor. You just have to run away. I've seen it plenty, but I don't think I've been hit by it.

Guess I'm always either behind him taking off the tail or to the side/behind throwing spells/miracles/pyromancies at him.

Lightning Spear, Silver Knight Spear, and Ornstein's Dragon Slayer Spear were my favorite of the ones I've tried. I never leveled the Winged Spear much.

Most of the very early weapons you can find don't scale particularly well into the late game because they tend to have low stat modifiers even after upgrades. This makes them good candidates for lightning and fire upgrades, but since you already find a lightning spear, it probably isn't worth it to waste too many upgrades on a winged spear.

Well, I spoiler'd it in case anyone hadn't seen it yet. So I'll spoiler the attack description below.

Spoiler:

Sometimes when the GD rears up like it's going to do a body slam it spews forth a several hundred gallons of acid that essentially looks vomit. It expands from the chest cavity IIRC. It can't be blocked and does durability damage do your equipped gear.

With enchanted scaling, the Winged Spear does about 400 dmg around 30 INT. It does about 430 with +5 lightning as well. I played around on https://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/ and it appears to be the best choice if you're not spending many points in STR/DEX, outpaces the spear and partizan by about 30 on all the variations I considered.

EDIT: You can't do an Enchant build on the Silver Knight Spear or Dragon Slayer Spear, and the lightning spear tops out at 400 dmg.

Yeah with spears you have to factor in the safety of attacking while blocking. Even if it does less damage than a similarly enchanted swords, axes, or whatever, it's a viable weapon.

When I beat GD, I had a coop partner doing melee -> butt while I shot him with a bunch of arrows. At one point it looked like he was just trying to run away into a wall.

I'll take it.

Should have been a box quote for Dark souls.

Spears are a great choice for a guarded methodical approach to enemies. One of the recent game patches increased the amount of stamina they use per strike, so keeping your stamina up during the longer battles is very important. Learning to kick out shield guards is also important.

The Leo Ring can help significantly in the late game areas (post Lord Vessel).

I had him glitch and try to run away through a corner......

I was in that corner.....

It didn't end well.....

For me....

Soloing the Gaping Dragon is tedious. You inevitably run out of Stamina running back and forth trying to hit fast and stay safe.

Going light and fast is helpful, although it makes a one hit death more likely. Yet, even with Solaire and Lautrec a slow tank has a hard time not getting hit. You will likely be able to weather the blow, but then you have to run around for a while healing up before you can make another run.

As has been said, go for the tail first. It makes the rest of the fight a little safer if you can chop it off. It is easy to whiff when going for it. Might need to get a little closer before unleashing a two- handed chop.

You mean like using stairs / a lower elevation to avoid horizontal attacks?

Ah yeah, if you're going for an int scaling build, that's a little different. Winged Spear is probably a very good choice in that case.

I haven't really looked into it, but how do I get rid of the splash screens? I am attempting to get 80 dragon scales from the crow and getting rid of the opening screens will save me a lot of time.

You can edit a value in DSfix.ini to get rid of them. There is a note saying it's possible that it will cause issues, but people on here have done it without issue.

How? I thought they fixed duping.
