Dark Souls Catch-All

I honestly can't tell if you're serious or clocking ...

Totally 100% dead serious. I'm trying to wait to buy this until I've at least finished Persona 3, but I'm having a really hard time not biting for $60 + $10 toward another game down the line.

Amazons response was sorry, huge demand, first come, first serve - here is 10 bucks you'll get yours on the 6th (maybe).

Well then go to Kmart and get $20

Nah I am good. Plenty to play until then.

Disc in PS3, time to die.

Man, I can't wait to get home from work. I'm going to die so many times!

I don't recall if there's been fair warning, but for you guys new to the series don't go killing all the NPCs you meet as when they die, they're dead and gone (barring any sort of plot thing I haven't encountered).

I stopped at Best Buy after dinner and stared at the two copies on the shelf. Debated the $10 gift card on my phone. Tried to think how much I might play tonight vs whether Amazon will get it to me tomorrow. And thought about the pile.

Better show up tomorrow though. This has never happened before with Amazon, so I'm more inclined to blame the publisher. But damn, get it fixed.

I finished the tutorial and didn't die a single time. What kind of crap is this?

I'm almost considering getting this on the way home from work, but damnit, my pile is already immense. I mean, it's starting to block out the sun, it's that big.

Pro tip: If you use all your healing battling just a few enemies, then you went the wrong way.

Btw, I looooooooooooove the way they did the healing in this game. No more farming for weed or whatever it was we ate in Demon's Souls.

That's more like it! Skeleton warriors of doom kicked my ass.

Friendly tip: Save up 1k souls for the first merchant you encounter and buy a heater shield for a quick 100% physical damage block.

*Gold-plated knight destroyed me. Not going that way.

Oh no...

That makes me unhappy. I hate that aspect of Demon's Souls.

And according to some of the guys at Whiskey Media, they're much more rare and harder to identify.

Starting it up now, and a pyro, I think.

Blarg. Those things were a giant annoyance in Demon's Souls. You get panicky, trying to get them!

[edit]

So, my copy is a no-show, despite being assured this morning that it should be delivered today by 6pm.

Perhaps it's not the same unforgiving mechanic. I died and went back to the same location, and it was there again. Zero bosses killed to that point. If it is the same mechanic, not a fan.

Also, first boss down. Pyro here, btw.

Huh. So just now they're telling me it'll be here tomorrow. Hurray for "release-day" shipping!

Made it through the first post-tutorial boss and the next miniboss, now dying repeatedly trying to find the next bonfire. Really great so far. Movement is a bit quicker and more fluid that DS, and the enemies are quite a bit more versatile. I'm still shocked to see enemies climbing down ladders after me and trying to kick me off if the catch up.

Quit out, threw the controller down on the couch, caught it on a weird angle and it bounced off, hit the coffee table, and now one of the analog sticks is broken. That's right : I have officially broken my controller. Granted it was pretty much an accident, but still. I blame the game.

On my way out the door to replace it.

BTW, playing a sorcerer. Digging it thus far as I first rocked a Royal in DS and Soul Arrow is kind of my comfort zone.

OMGWTFBBQSHIPPED!

Yeah, tomorrow. I can handle one day late, as long as I still get my CE, especially with the way things have been at other retailers. Whew.

Yeah, same here. Think that's the way I'm heading.

The thief thing is a little tempting though, some kind of skeleton key item that can't be from anywhere else. Not sure if that just helps you access things early or can be a help for a long time, or you can always get the other keys eventually? Hm...

I went pyro because it had good melee stats and the ability to cast off the bat. The fireball spell has been quite handy in a few situations, but my melee is more than adequate.

Pro tip #3, you can jump now. Start dashing, release the button, and press it again right away. I've used it to reach an otherwise inaccessible area so far.

Yeah, jumping is cool. Watching other people try to jump and roll off a cliff instead is also cool.

Thank you! There have been a couple of areas I wasn't able to get to that clearly were supposed to be reachable.

I'm so glad the things we're talking about aren't texture pop-in.

Does this game play cross networks? Or is Live going to be a sad, lonely place?

DSGamer wrote:

No, no. I think there will be plenty of people, bloodstains, and messages to interact with on Live if you jump in relatively early.

The toughest thing for Live players is just going to be their lack of experience with Demon's Souls. There are a lot of little quirks that have carried over and are never really explained in game. After 20 hours of play, I skimmed through the Demon's Souls thread here and found out so many things I was clueless about. Finding out that dodging speed nearly doubled when your equip burden was less than 50% was game changing for me.

For those with no prior experience in this series, you might consider skimming through the Demon's Souls Wiki or the Demon's Souls thread on these forums.

Playing on the 360. Got through the tutorial/first mini boss and so far loving the game mostly. I strongly dislike the skeletons. That first pair of them keep killing me, although I managed to start regularly beating them and dying to the second pair of skeletons, so, improving. Locking on and hiding behind objects to heal helps quite a bit. Any tips for the starting player?

Yes, if enemies are that difficult, then it's usually the game's way of telling you you're in an area above your level, or there's a better way.

Slight spoiler for the crow at the end of the tutorial. New Pyros may want to read.

Spoiler:

Don't drop your catalyst. Sure, you get a nice item, but where's my damn catalyst!?

Go another way I died to the first pair once, went back and killed them, then realized there was probably an easier path. There was! As was the case with the red-eyed knight in Demon's Souls 1-1, you can beat any enemy at any time, but if you're hitting a 200 hp enemy for 9 dmg per swipe, it probably means you aren't really supposed to be there yet. Come back later.

Edit: damn your Taunhausser'ing ninja edit, cyrax.

Okay, so the game isn't quite as difficult as I'd feared then, good to know.
