Unofficial GWJ Book Club - Thanks, All.

Eight folks so far in the Google+ group, and that's a good bit under the number who have voted on books... So some of you are still missing.

Submit your information here.

A little more than an hour to go before voting closes on submissions! Get your votes in, last chance!

Also, please submit your info for the Google+ group. You can find links to these things on the last couple pages of the thread.

The last vote got in with like, 20 minutes to spare and tied it up between two books.

New Vote!

Also, please continue to submit your Google+ info.

Cloud Atlas is the Idle Book Podcast selection for October, FWIW.

Chose that one as well

Cloud Atlas is leading the tie breaker at the moment, but I'm going to let the tie breaker run until Thursday, then we'll work on scheduling the final discussion, and I'll lay out the weekly chapter divisions for the online discussions on Goodreads.

How does the Idle Book Cast work? Have they already done the book? I'd hate for us to go with a book that folks have already read and had their fill of discussion for our resumption.

Didn't even know it existed. It seems to be a book they might do for next time. Not sure.

Is it handy or smart two have two separate book reading clubs? It's a bit saddening that we are not talking to each other.

I didn't know it existed either, until this morning. The difference, I think, is that one is just a bunch of people listening to a podcast, while I want to engage in discussion.

I will set up our discussions this evening, and I'm declaring Cloud Atlas our winner.

Also, continue to submit your info for Google+ so I can have all of those available join us for our discussion, once we schedule it.

True, they are following that group. While we take the lead ourselves. Which I tend to like much better.
Already added Cloud Atlast to my Kindle

Alright, here's the low-down, folks.

Cloud Atlas is our book.

True to our new format, things will proceed as follows:

The following survey should be used so folks can select a time slot for our group discussion on Google+. The time slot with the most available folks will be chosen. I've given everyone permission to see the results of this survey so they can get an idea of where things are converging.

TIME SLOT SURVEY. PLEASE FILL THIS OUT.

Next, for our weekly discussions. These will be held online, in text-only format, over in our Goodreads Group. Folks should adhere to the following schedule if you wish to participate without being spoiled.

September 10-16 -
The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing (i)
Letters from Zedelghem (i)
Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery (i)

September 17-23 -
The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish (i)
An Orison of Sonmi~451 (i)
Sloosha's Crossin' An Ev'rythin' After

September 24-30 -

Finally, please continue to submit your Google+ information.

In case it wasn't entirely clear, you should be well on your way into Cloud Atlas at this time. The final discussion has not been scheduled yet, so I encourage you to submit your availability.

I'm going to be a bit behind, as I don't get an audible credit until later this week.

Whoops, starting it today then! Will make it in time Will make sure I will be.

Same here Got a week at the beach next week to catch up, though.

A few updates:

1. Our first week has passed, which means our Goodreads discussion for the first three sections is free to take off. See the thread here, and beware, this is an open-spoiler zone, so stay clear if you haven't finished the first three sections yet!

2. Our Google+ circle is now 20 members strong. If you are not one of those 20, and think you should be, submit your info here. I also just realized that I haven't shared the circle with everyone in it, so I just did.

3. Our Google+ Hangout discussion of the book has not been scheduled yet, because I'm still collecting availability info. This will continue up until a week before the end of our reading time, so please, continue to submit your availability here.

Second Week Discussion Thread is live.

Also, please see items 2 and 3 in the post above.

Our discussion will be next Thursday, October 11th, at 8:30 PM on Google+. I will send out an invite to the entire Google+ circle, so be sure to have your hangout window open, and the plugin installed.

Crap!! I'm behind in my reading--time to put the controller down for a couple nights and get through this book!!

I will try my best to make it. But a small chance of succeeding. Have a test for my training tomorrow. And next week another test for another training that I had a few weeks ago. Combine that with the fact that I have a real hard time getting into this book. First book I started here that is kinda not my thing (yet voted for! lol).

Sorry, probably out for a while here. Maybe the next book or two I'll be able to get back on. 3-week old daughter really drains the free time and energy.

An 8 hour flight back from Italy, and a new wife that was on an opposite sleeping schedule for said flight, gave me the time to finish up the book. I really enjoyed it, and I will be posting on Goodreads soon. Getting back from a 10 day honeymoon leaves lots of errands to run, an apartment to pick up, and a business partner (and father) that isn't exactly thrilled I'm not coming back to work until Monday, but I'll get around to it soon.

Don't worry, she'll be four weeks old before you know it!

Congratz, TheCounselor!

Just finished. Definitely have some strong opinions about the book, and at least one interesting game parallel to share.

Life kind-of kicked my ass after I planned all of this, so I'm certain I won't be done by Thursday, but don't worry, I'm not delaying the discussion, and I'll still be there.

If you haven't noticed, I've also not started to put anything together for October. I'm declaring October a free-read month, mostly because of 2 things:

1. October happens to be the unfortunate convergence of two deadlines at work.

2. PenCon 2012. If you don't know, I'm on staff, and just following those deadlines, I've got things I need to finish for PenCon.

We'll officially resume sometime early November.

I'll be NaNoWriMo-ing in November, so I will MOST likely be out, but looking forward to many more months of awesome Book Clubbing. :-D.

I'd volunteer to run an October one, but it's kinda already 1/3 done. Anybody have a smallish book/short story they are interested in doing? I'll set up the Goodreads and Google+ stuff as long as NSMike doesn't mind and we can find something small enough for anyone interested to read in a week or two.

You know what would be interesting? Having the folks over in the writing thread nominate one of their stories from the last couple months for the reading group to discuss.

If you're looking for podcasts discussing Cloud Atlas, here are the ones I've found:

Library Police episode 80.

Forthcoming - Sword and Laser. Their introduction. Goodreads discussion group.

As mentioned previously in the thread, Idle Thumbs Book Club.

The Incomparable episode 109.

Thnx Katy. I've noticed those as well. Thought it was funny how everyone is at this book right now.
Tomorrow I have a test. Chatting away about this book would be a welcome break. But not even near finishing it

Well, the movie coming out soon is probably a big reason. I'm really glad that I was turned onto this book.

Friendly Reminder: Discussion tonight.
