Unofficial GWJ Book Club - Thanks, All.

In and excited. Anybody feel like doing something for August? I'll probably miss the actual discussion (of course), but I'd be happy to read and discuss on here

I'd be in, as well. I'd probably be able to make the discussions now, as well, depending on when they are.

I'm interested.

Lots of books on my list I want to read. And I have been debating leaving, so I could read the books I still have on my list. But I got to discover authors I would have not discovered maybe, and read great books I might have missed otherwise. Will just have to make more time to read then. Never a bad thing! And loved our talks together as well!!!
Do hope there will be more people able to finish the chosen book at the deadline and show up for our talk

Labor Day is approaching in two weeks, roughly. I will be out of town until September 5th, so I'm looking at September 10th as the resumption date.

Things are going to change for the book club, however.

First off, we're going to get more organized. I am going to require some more participation from the membership to get things as tightly organized as possible. Each month will feature several surveys for you to fill out. Each of these surveys will be posted here, in the Steam group, and on Goodreads (Just a link to the same survey, not 3 different versions of the same surveys).

1. Availability. I will post a survey that will host a range of dates and times, so we can pick the date and time that works best for the most people.

2. Book choices. Instead of the slapdash way we handled book choices last time, this time will be different. First, a week before our official discussion, I will post a submission form that will allow folks to submit their book choices. I will require a Goodreads or Amazon link to the book in question. Suggestions are open to the entire field of participants. No limitations on who can submit books or what genre or category, and the suggestions will be anonymized, so no one is favored. I won't collect your name or anything on these surveys, so even I won't know who sent what. Only myself. I would ask that you please only submit a single suggestion.

The next step in this process is a vote, containing the books that have been submitted. This will go live a day before the official discussion of our current book. Please vote for a submission other than yours, otherwise we'll have a running list of books instead of a highest vote-getter. In the case where a book might be suggested by more than one individual, I will call that out. That is the ONLY circumstance under which you can vote for the book you submitted.

3. Discussion modes. We will have two discussion modes now. One will be the final discussion, with questions and everything on Mumble, like our old format. That will happen at the end of the month, when we have the most folks available. The second will be a discussion group on Goodreads where people can post their thoughts on chapter blocks that will be selected after the book is chosen, and will occur in the run-up to the main discussion. Basically, each week you will be expected to complete the reading of specific blocks of chapters, and then discuss those chapters on Goodreads (or a better forum, if this seems insufficient) in text form. I'm hoping this eliminates the problems with folks who will not be able to attend the big discussions, as well as give some incentive to those of us slackers by setting smaller goals, and accommodate those fast readers who are enthusiastic about discussions.

So, without further ado, here's the first submission form for book suggestions:

I will stop accepting new suggestions on September 3. So you have until then.

I'm starting early to allow folks to both get used to these ideas, and provide feedback on this new process. Proceed!

Thanks for doing this Mike. I wanted to participate on Mumble last night but 8:00 is when my son gets his bath and put to sleep so I'm pretty much out of commission until around 8:45. Could I suggest bumping any live group discussions to 9:00pm EST?

Well, there was no discussion yesterday... We haven't had one for a few months. I will add a survey for availability for our discussion in the near future.

Also, my mumble server is an expense that I'm considering dropping. How do folks feel about switching to Google+ Hangouts?

G+ is great - I'm totally fine with moving there. If people don't want their faces up, you can be audio only without any issue, I believe.

As someone who hasn't been able to make one of these discussions, Google+ works for me.

You absolutely can. There's a toggle in the G+ Hangout toolbar to turn off your camera, but leave the mic live.

Google + is fine with me. What shall we read?

How do I find you guys on G+?

We currently have five book suggestions, and a little less than two weeks before I stop accepting new suggestions. I am hoping that folks are just putting this off, but... Please, get your suggestions in soon.

You can optionally PM me your email address, or ask for mine in a PM, either way works. I will be creating a G+ circle specifically for the discussion and inviting everyone to the hangout anyway, so whatever you please.

I'll be adding some suggestions in the next week or so.

I would prefer everyone submit only a single suggestion.

Just got back from holidays. Will send in my suggestion soon

I'm down to join in. A doodle survey for availible times seems like a good idea.

This is loosely related to one of the suggestions submitted:

http://www.ted.com/talks/jon_ronson_strange_answers_to_the_psychopath_test.html

We have nine books that have been suggested, and I want to vote for at least three of them...

It's a good crop. If we get too many more, I may close suggestions early so we don't end up with too many votes spread across the spectrum.

TRIPLE post!

After further consideration, I think 9 books is a good place to stop. Next up, it's time to vote for your pick! I'll keep the vote up until the original end date of the Suggestion survey, which was September 3. Get your votes in by then, please! I won't end this one early.

Here's a link to the vote:

Vote for your September GWJ Book Club Pick!

So that voting goes through Sept. 3rd? That's so long! I could read another book before then

Well, go for it then, I'm reading one myself.

Please keep those votes coming. We have a four-way tie at the moment, and I didn't plan a tie breaker. If we still have a tie as of Friday, I'm going to stop this survey and post another with just the tied top vote-getters and have folks revote.

Good tie plan.

Dang, now I'll have to finish a book just to be a part of the crowd. :G

Sounds good.

Still reading the Song of Ice and Fire series. So good till then

My vote is cast.

Since I noted the tie, we've gotten a smattering of votes, and there is now a leader... However, the leader only leads by one vote, and there are four other books poised to tie it up again.

I think next time I'm going to have a hard cutoff of six suggestions, just to keep the voting field smaller. Nine books, and they're all good suggestions, are simply too many to pick a clear leader. It will just be the first six to respond. I'll give you warning through this thread a day or so before posting the new suggestion survey.

Sounds like a plan. If in this case it comes to tie, then I suppose you can do the final vote between the two books.

Oh, also, we need to get the Google+ circle off the ground for our discussion, so..

Submit your information here.

Done & done.
