NHL 13 Catch-All

Finally played it last night, pretty good. I can actually score now in this one! (and yes, probably more than I score at home now, too.)

Got home last night at 1:40. Still haven't even booted it. *sigh*

Cheating on your wife again?

Eat a dick, Green!

Got to play for a short while last night. I enjoy the skating engine, though it's not perfect yet to me. I should be able to manipulate the stick position while skating as well, but as soon as you do right-stick work the skating locks into the coast cycle. There's other whackiness, too, that I think will simply require practice with regard to the backward skating trigger and facing the player appropriately on defense. I meant to check but I believe the auto-backwards-skate is on by default -- and is as asinine as ever -- which might account for part of it.

I like the forechecking and the forechecking positioning indicators, it's often quite hard to get through zones cleanly which is good. Hardcore mode doesn't seem hardcore enough at this point... passes are still seeming to auto-aim unless you're way off.

I think I'll be able to play this for quite a while.

After further playthrough... it's fantastic. Auto-backskate is on by default and if you turn it off it turns back on every time you boot the game, by the way. With it off it's very easy to control the skating and I can see getting even more used to it over time. Cross-crease one-timers are almost impossible to pull off unless it's perfect which is as it should be. Defender back in good position? You're not going to get (many) cheap shots off, and if you do the goalies' awareness often yields a save anyway. Blow your coverage and let a reasonably talented player in alone? They will likely hurt you. There's so many delightful things about this game it's unreal. Playing defense with the granularity of the skating controls is challenging but rewarding, making maintaining good position key and timing your stick checks paramount. If you can't control your edges or inertia, or lose awareness that forward will beat you and get in nicely. Goalies make varied and interesting saves, kicking things or blockering them off at realistic angles. I'm really looking forward to some Be A Pro with all these additions.

I could be up for the LA Kings, seeing that I live in LA and was in attendance for most of our home playoff games in route to the SC!!!!!

I grew up in LA and Santa Barbara is not that far from LA (about 2 hours). We get Fox Sports West here.

Not sure. Having just played my first game of NHL 13 (Kings v San Jose) and losing 2-0, I think I would bring down the quality of play overall.

A) No one can bring down the level of play more than me.
B) Do you have the full version of the game already?

I do.

I'm sensing a mass Goodjer road trip to Edgar's.

Just played my third game. Third loss. At least this time I scored.

When I play solo I usually set it to auto-aim. Of course, you can't do this in online or HUT games. So if we get a league going, we are going to have to use manual aim.

This is pretty much why SwampYankee is not interested in playing online with us. We played several games in NHL 10 in which it was 0-0 in regulation, and the shootout took forever. I've gotten a bit better in NHL 12 because I really wanted to play more HUT. But I still use auto-aim in solo play and it is 100% better.

Also, momentum is supposed to be big, so letting the skater glide or stopping will result in better aim than when he is skating. I have a lot of problems in the demo with shooting wide because of this.

I think it's trying out. I've have never played a in a league. We can start out a league with minimum games and try and get the hang of things.

I think in the long run, it's all about having fun and learning to go roofdaddy!!!

Still having fun with the demo (Goddamn you, Edgar). I typically do the NHL Moments Live thing. Last night I ran the gamut from back-to-back games winning in 11 seconds and 12 seconds with quick goals to a triple OT game that I won with 0.6 on the clock. I've had streaks of getting manhandled in about 5 straight games. Nice breakaways off my silliness yielding game winners or fabulous saves.

I have personally witnessed this after seeing this video.

Pretty hilariously bad. I've only seen it when on the powerplay and I don't know how settings, difficulty level, or opposite team strategy selection play into it.

That is not necessarily an incorrect behaviour.

I love the new physics engine, but it hasn't improved my game play. I don't deserve to make the third string.

It's almost like they did that on purpose.

This is what we have so far. We can hammer out the finer details of the franchise when the game is released.

Well....crap. Might as well sign me up as well. I was going to pass on NHL 13 since I didn't really have a group to play with, but seems like there's some GWJ interest, so why not?

Since the Wings have already been taken, I suppose I'll go Chicago...If I can't have the hometown team, might as well go with a division rival.

Gross. Hey mr hawker, can you update the first post with the teams and the captain's choice?

Ok, I will take Vancouver. Do people want me to set up the league now? I will be MORE than happy to relinquish the "commissionership" when folks pick up the title?

If you dont mind jumping in and giving us some more details on how we can modify the league that would be great.
