NHL 13 is looking like the upgrade 12 should have been. Game Informer has a great article on 22 Things We Know About NHL 13. Maybe it's too soon, but I'd probably buy it today.

Anyone interested in play in the GWJHL should head over here to claim a team.

I guess this is all too soon. But more information on NHL 13 keeps coming, and it looks like a serious upgrade.

In addition to the article in the OP, Gameinformer now has another 30 Things We Know About NHL 13's GM Connected Mode and the New GM Brain.

I know a GWJ league is a longshot, but they did some seriously cool work on online leagues.

GM Connected

1. EA retooled its most popular mode to include a multi-user dynasty with up to 30 NHL teams being run by 30 human general managers.

2. This new GM Connected mode features a full 82-game schedule and can run for up to 25 years.

3. EA chose against including fantasy draft because it didn't want the barrier of entry to be a tedious 45-round draft. If you want to mix up the teams so no one is forced to play with the Edmonton Oilers (zing!) you can randomize the rosters when starting the league.

4. Users can play GM Connected in several ways, including a solo league against the CPU AI, standard versus, co-op, six-on-six online team play, taking the role of a general manager, or as a coach who handles line changes and team strategy.

5. Connected GM is elastic, meaning one team could be controlled by a GM, while another is run by a hands-on player, and another is run by a coach.

6. In six-on-six online team play leagues, you can have up to 25 users per each team. This allows teams to have a ringer take the role of a regular when they're short a body.

7. Free agency includes both unrestricted and restricted free agents, and it's handled via seven bidding periods. The highest bidders win the services of the player, and if you strike out you have several more rounds to find an adequate replacement.

8. Much to the dismay of hardcore franchise guys, the NHL Entry Draft is automated. You can still scout players during the season and build a priority list of prospects. Once the draft starts, however, the CPU will use your priority list to make selections for your team.

9. While running your team you have full access to the entire list of players in the organization, including the AHL, CHL, and foreign league prospects.

10. The commissioner controls how quickly the league advances. You can opt for either three-day, one-week, or two-week periods.

11. A news panel in the menu screen keeps you abreast of all league happenings.

12. An integrated messaging system informs you of waivers, trades, and league join requests. You can also send messages to the commissioner, the entire league, or team members.

13. EA built in systems to deal with grieving and cheating. The commissioner has the power to kick out users at any time.

14. If a commissioner goes missing, other general managers can vote him out to keep the league moving along.

15. EA plans to release a mobile app that allows players to stay engaged with their leagues when they're away from their consoles. From the app, players can juggle team rosters, scour the waiver wire, propose trades, and read about league happenings.

16. If you want to keep your GM experience offline, you still have that option. Doing so will allow you to make your draft selections like in past NHL games.

Oh, and NHL 13 will also have:

While it is lonely in here, EA is pumping out great info on next year's game. The skating engine looks amazingly updated.

Many of the features they cite as new (for example, the ability to skate backwards and generally shift around on your skates, or the ability to get a little extra burst of speed off of your first stride) actually already exist as of NHL 12, but it seems like this time they've put some work into those systems and made them more explicit, which seems like a smart thing to do and stands a very good chance of improving the game. Looking forward to it.

Gameplay improvements are always welcome. I was really happy with NHL12 outside of the goalie AI woes.

Online Dynasty should be interesting.

I will buy it. This I know.

We may actually have some dump and chase!

I think I'm in this year. I've been playing NHL 11 all year, but I think I'm ready for an upgrade, if only for improved A.I. After too long with a sports game you start see through the game into the system and can beat the a.i. because you know what they're going to do.

I'm in. I just got into hockey this season so I picked up NHL 12 from the library. So far it's scratched my itch. Just gotta see how I do online against real people.

I'm looking forward to seeing their goalie AI. It was my biggest complaint last year.

I'm in. Shocking, I know.

I actually don't have to say this, do I? Preordered, release day shipping, etc, etc. I like the skating and I really hope they aren't blowing smoke about the AI.

Not looking to bad! Still wish online fantasy drafts would be added. Can't wait to play as the Oilers! Gotta trade for a big Center, and a top 2 D-man, and I'm gold!

New gameplay video from EA showcases defensive play:

This game continues to look impressive. Can't wait for the demo.

I. Want. Now.

We really need to get some sort of league play going this year. The last time I remember GWJ hockey was when 2K was still dominating hockey. I missed the team play of NHL 09.

With GM Connected, I think we ought to find a way to have a fun league.

I'm in for sure. Team play and GM Connected.

Do we know yet if you can set sliders in the GM Connected mode?

Oh hells yeah!

I really hope they speed up the loading times of the UI and menus in the PS3! It's always lagged more than the 360.

I have a solution for you!

Ha! I know, but when all your buds play on one system...

Exactly! You get new buds.

Sign me up! Are you planning on creating a new league? If you got a open spot, I'm in.

I think we should definitely get back into the league thing in some fashion. And Certis has to be involved so I can manhandle Iginla like the playtoy he is. So does Green just so I can hear him cuss in his outrageous Canuckistanian French accent.

I would like to put dibs on the Wings if we get a league together

Then I will lay claim to the Blues.

Should be fun playing the Dead Wings.

This looks good. The problem is I suck so bad at controlling these games. Being mostly a PC gamer I don't have much experience with either post Genesis-era sports games or modern console controllers, and generally revert to button mashing as I try to remember what button I need to push to do a certain move. Most of the time I end up icing the puck as I accidentally shoot it in yet again from behind my own blue line.
