Sword of the Stars 2

Getting off work a little early!! Steam says an hour left til unlock, go grab it it quick if you want the free immersion pack!!

OMG DELAYED!!!!1

Still says four more hours...

Nooooooooo

As long as it unlocks sometime today allowing people to play this weekend...

I don't know what you guys are on about, but it's installing for me.

Oh, and I bought it. Whoops.

it was weird it changed from 1 hour and then as the end of the hour was approaching steam swittched it to 4 hours and now its ready to install, just weird steam stuff.

What can I say, I got an award at work the other day, so I have some extra cash floating my way.

What's that? I was just looking for any excuse to buy the game? That's probably correct.

Downloading now due to the perfidy of Steam earlier this afternoon. Well, that and concalls all afternoon...

I fired it up just to fire it up (even though I'm, ahem, working). The options screen wasn't working for me in-game. I started a game using whatever setting were presented to me and clicked through menus and stuff in-game. Not happy that the text size doesn't scale at all and was difficult to read at 1920x1200. There certainly seems to be enough real estate for their to be menu and text scaling.

Anyway, that's likely just something I'll have to get use to. Also, it could just be an annoyance as my eyes are usually pretty strained by the end of the work week (I'm a copy editor, so all I do it read).

That's my 5 minute impression without actually doing anything.

Careful if you installed before the post time on this post you probably have the beta build.

I am sure this has something to do with them running the beta through steam.

Hmm, I validated my files on Steam and everything checked out. I installed it after it had been moved into the "New Releases" of Steam. *shrugs shoulders*

That explains the missing text and odd things I've been encountering. I've got the 4+GB Beta build.

Any way to force an update, besides uninstalling and reinstalling?

If u have 17174b (lower right of the splash screen) its the beta build, someone screwed up for sure. Hopefully they get the release build up fast.

They've already pushed it (according to their forums).

I had the same thing. Guess the option that just read, 'No' should have been a tip off.

Frustrating.

Tried uninstall/reinstall. No change, still the beta.

*sigh*

One of these days I will learn to not buy stuff Day 1.

*sigh*

Yeah and their forums are down too WTG kerberos!! Hitting the d/l in steam right now and its saying 4776 mb which is wrong. Im hitting up the steam forums, PI forums, and Kerberos when its up trying to get info. For now whereever you got the game from it has to update from steam and steam will replace your version with the beta build it has from this last beta test. Whenever it actually does get updated the size to d/l should be around 1.5 to 2 gb, its compressed and will inflate on install

I find it really bizarre that you wouldn't check this sort of thing before hitting the upload button. Didn't this happen to the Witcher 2 as well?

Stronghold 3
Dead Island
Witcher 2
now SoTS2

and thats just off the top of my head, been happening alot, something I think steam really needs to look into ways it can prevent the problem, give the developers better release management tools and environments.

Now that I think about it, my cynical side wonders if the above companies did this because they flat out missed their deadline, and were contractually obligated to release something on that date.

Kerberos is saying that they have Saturday support lined up with Steam, so if the issues carry on after tonight they'll still be able to work on things.

I am an Oracle and MSSQL DBA. I also have run various change management tools as the administrator of the tools, Stat for a large PeopleSoft environment and Starteam for a Delphi/C+ environment, I have also worked alot with SourceSafe and CVS.

Compared to pretty much any other type of software, gaming change management/version control/release management is the funniest joke I have never heard. I might even write an article and try to get it posted here on GWJ. But essentially the fact that you can take a build hand it over to steam and that goes through an extremly limited test (apparently someone at steam pulls and installs the game and makes sure it runs in a very limited way) and then immediatly into a production environment is pretty darn stupid.

Compare to business software where you will usually have at least 4 environments dev->tst->qa->prd. With tests for security, data, point and full releases, alongside the detail level code testing. Not to mention your ftp environments wouldn't even allow you to put a build in the wrong place.

Kerberos has 12 people on staff, one of them screwed up and as a company they screwed up because the time it takes to implement all this stuff, it was deemed unimportant compared to finances and time to actually develop the game. Steam as well is to blame because they should have a better deployment platform for developers. How on earth do they not even have some kind of signoff process

"Did you download you game and did it install and run correctly"? Check

This is not rocket science it just about management, logistics, infrastructure, money, and planning. In other words costly busy work with no easily seen tangible benefit. If you could somehow measure the hit their taking to their reputation, potential lost sales from the hit their going to take on reviews and word of mouth, etc then maybe you could start convincing gaming and publishing comapnies to take this stuff more seriously. They haven't learned over the past 15 years so I don't really see alot of hope.

SoTS2 launched fine on Gamersgate. The Witcher 2 launched fine from GOG. I think it's just a communication thing, but I'm not about to speculate any farther than that.

The only other thing I have to add is the guy running Kerberos's Facebook page seemed to intimate that it was on Steam's end that things got screwed up. Yes, the cynical person could take the angle that Kerberos is pointing fingers, but the tone of what they've been saying doesn't suggest that at all. It's a screw up, both sides are working to get it figured out.

Its completly possible its totally on Steams end considering they ran the beta on steam and steam already had that build.

Current info also posted in the OP

As of 8p.m. EST 10/28 the released game on Steam is still the beta version of the game.

The Official Kerberos forums are still down.
Official information is being posted on the PI forums here.
Steam Forums also has a thread on the topic here.
Also Follow Kerberos on twitter here. ***last update says upload will be finished within the hour!

*No matter where u acquired the game it runs through steam and steam will put you on the beta version of the game so everyone is affected by this issue.

Sadly, you are not correct. Well, you kind of are: the GG download is fine but then Steam downloads the pre-release version. No matter where you bought it from, Steam is the one doing the installing. Oh well other stuff to play, but disappointed. I hope they get it figured out tonight.
