Sword of the Stars 2

10/19/2012 - Almost exactly 1 year to the date The official "All Clear" post was put up by Mecron announcing that the game has reached the state the wish it was in at release. After 80 patches we can now play the game. I have been enjoying it for the past several months and am glad to final tell all goojers who might want a good, deep, complex, and awful purdy space pew pew 4x to go enjoy the game.

11/4 - Purchase if you want to support the game. Definetly will be the best 4x Space Empire game out there with a little more love. If you can forgive all the hairless ugly baglike apes made of mostly water involved and want to support the game itself you can now get a free copy of SOTS1 and all the current DLC if you purchase before 11/30. Current state of the game is a much more playable end-to-end beta.

As of 10/29 10:30 a.m.
I have to , very sadly, advise people not to buy the game. It appears that they are releasing a highly unfinished game that barely qualifies as a beta.
Most people are in denial and just can't believe its actually the release build but apparently it is Official PI Thread.
note: it is an update from the friday build

I'm looking forward to this, even though all I really did in the first one was tech up to dreadnaughts and make neat ships. The dynamic tech tree is a bit of a double-edged sword. It's cool that you get a slightly different tree each time, but it kind of sucks when you need to do a ton of research before you can find out if you have access to your favorite or not (freaking multi-warhead missiles...).

This game is looking soooooo good. I can't wait to give it a go.

One of the best overview/demo's so far on Angry Joe.

2:30 Space Monster!!!
3:50 Start a new game and the starmap!!

The starmap imho is INCREDIBLE. This is what alot of people have been waiting for in sci-fi games, a starmap that looks and feels like real space!! No one has ever come close, even SOTS 1 with the single planet "stars" and empty space between them was a poor representation this time dynamically generated maps with stars, planets, systems, moons, asteroid fields, nebula, gas clouds, plus stuff I don't think we've seen yet I am hoping for Black holes!!

5:10 the "throne room" view of your homeworld, a lets look at my pretty planet in orbit of its star

8:15 Tech tree, new areas of study, psionics!

9:20 Ship Designer - Interiors: Supply, energy, crew management
target range to test ship design

11:45 Ship Combat, extreme zoom out scale allows you to pull back and see where your ships are in a system, very cool, tactical damage by facing and control a ship on the 3D plane

14:30 Space combat showcase, first shot is destroyer class ships being launched from tubes from its "Carrier" ship and deploying in a battle formation, unbelievably cool. It lasts about 4 minutes, lots of cool ship animations, missles launching from tubes, etc.

Yeah, I've been eagerly awaiting this one too.

E3 Video similar to Angry joe but a little better view of the map.

2:20 New Game screen

3:20 Starmap, you get a bit better of the overal look and he discusses more about the space terrain features in between stars (nebula, gas clouds), also mentions you can customize your ship colors which is new from SOTS 1

4:50 Tech Tree, discusses the randomization Lobster was talking about and gives the reasons for it, I love it personally

6:15 Ship Design

Subscribing.

Keeping an eye on this. Never got the first one either, but I do enjoy the genre. Got several space games in my pile.

I tried the demo of the first game, didn't fully click with me. But this looks amazing.

Tagged and will be watching the Angry Joe video soon.

As an aside, I really like Doug Walker, but his band of fellow reviewers on his site bug me. Angry Joe is one of them.

Edit: Ok, he's a geek like me after all. I can deal with some of his past work after all.

I'm pretty excited too. First game was great and the whole starting in the middle of a 4X angle has a lot of potential. Plus, it has cool looking spaceships!

My only headscratch is about the way they handle 3D "height". Only having 3 levels... doesn't that mean people will just camp at the highest or lowest level in combat? That, in itself, removes the reason for having them in the first place.

Handling 3D in games is difficult. I think their idea of having different height levels is a good one, as it makes them easier to navigate, but that the number of levels shouldn't be restricted in any way.

You could make all navigation work on a grid system.

I think thats something that needs a hands on experience to see if the three plane thing is going to work, I trust them though.

I'll take it over one plane.

Check out the New Von Neumann's. The background starfield is so much better than 1.

Just release it already.

I've been so close to ordering SotS 1 on Steam now at least a dozen times. Now I can just wait for #2. I'm definitely interested, as I loved GalCiv II and find myself jonesing for a space strategy game every few months.

I put in a lot of hours with the original SOTS. Glad this one is just a little over a month away!

Nice, they should do another with an equal amount of point defence.

The Starks turned into giant space monsters?

Those pictures: Holy Macross, Batman... I kind of want that in actual play.

Cthulhu in space! I can dig it,

The voice was kind of hokey. With a better actor, that could have been pretty creepy.

Go Go Itano Circus! =D

Keeping my eye on this one. Looks like it'll scratch that 4x itch nicely...

Where is this available? I couldnt find it on Steam or Amazon.
