NFL 2012 Week 7 Thread

5-0 feels pretty good! I wish I was betting money. Of course, if I did, my luck would run out pronto.

Aaaaaand the Panthers' sucktitude just cost GM Marty Hurney his job.

Guess I'm not the only one who has run up the white flag on the Panthers' season.

After a fast start and then an agonizing rest of the game under Chad Henne, Blaine Gabbert gets to enjoy at least one week of being officially Not The Problem.

Hopefully the MRI on his shoulder doesn't show anything bad. It's his non-throwing shoulder so unless it's really bad, it shouldn't keep him down too long.

Don't know what MJD's injury is yet, either. He just said after the game that it "didn't feel right". Doesn't sound like a season-ender, probably a week-to-week sort of thing.

I saw Grantland pick up on this... but the NFL is really being transparent about only calling the Brady Rule for Tom Brady and no other QB... wtf.

So much for that idea - it may be a Lisfranc injury.

On the good side, Gabbert may not miss any time.

It looks like the Redskins have re-signed fan favorite Chris Cooley now that Fred Davis is done for the season.

Oh you have to be kidding. WR stepped out of bounds. TD waived off. Game over instead of OT. Poor Bucs. :(

I thought he was forced out, then he reestablished himself inbounds. In my eyes it was a good TD, but that call is very subjective.

Since that play made me 3-0 in the early games, it made me happy. But it could have been called pass interference, illegal contact, or just that he was pushed out and came back. I thought it was a terrible call.

They followed up with highlights on RedZone during one of the afternoon breaks (jeez NFL only schedule 2 games at 4 ). It should have been illegal contact, which nullifies the being out of bounds penalty, but because Josh Freeman had left the pocket, there's another rule that makes it not illegal contact.

Apparently the refs got it right, as baffling as it seems.

I understand Mike Williams was pushed out of bounds legally since Josh Freeman left the pocket. So that nullifies illegal contact.

But didn't Williams re establishment himself as an eligible receiver after being shoved out?
From wiki
"Any eligible receiver that goes out of bounds is no longer an eligible receiver and cannot receive a forward pass, unless that player re-establishes by taking three steps in bounds."

It seemed to me that Williams took 3 steps before catching the ball.

Here's what Mike Pereira tweeted: "In TB not illegal contact because the QB was out of the pocket and you can't come back in and be the first to touch."

Glad I made some of you guys sweat with that Jets pick

And that RGIII mad scramble slash 20 yd pass play was nail biting and pretty friggen impressive. Plus that last touchdown to put the skins up 23-20 was picture perfect.

Be honest, Jets fans weren't the only people sweating the end of that game. The Pats are making me crazy this year.

"They've self-inflicted wounds on themselves." Gruden is such an idiot.

if you haven't already seen it.

One thing I have to hand to the NFL is what they capture in game pretty much trumps all other leagues. NFL films 5 great plays of the week can make 5 fairly routine highlights seem like the greatest sporting plays ever.

J.J.Watt is a beast. He hardly flinched when Ray Rice decided to jump into him, or whatever he was trying to accomplish. I also fully believe he HAS eaten burritos bigger than Ray Rice.

Warren Moon cries racism when commenting on the media's treatment of Cam Newton. I'm sure he felt the same way when Ryan Leaf was getting it way worse.

*EDIT*
.......and Tim Tebow says hi.

You mean resigning all those 2-14 players for huge money didn't work out? No way!

One critic's lazy and stupid is another man's dog whistle.

Can't we just have more QBs on Facebook?

Not the first time I've seen Warren Moon cry racism. He really is the little boy that cries wolf. Even if there was racism, he cries it all the time so no one takes him seriously.

Warren Moon crying racism is getting old.*

*I'm not saying he might be wrong.

MJD does not have Lisfranc injury, will not need surgery, but will miss multiple games.

Blaine Gabbert has a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. He says he intends to play unless prevented by the doctors.

Or, to put it another way, Moon is a Hall of Fame QB who played his first six years in Canada because he was a black guy who wanted to play QB in the NFL.

I'm not saying Moon is right. But he's more attuned to that possibility because of what he went through.

He does sort of remind me of the Martin Lawrence character in that movie Boomerang.

I think you make an excellent point in regards to Moon's perpective. I thin it was especially disingenuous when people compared him to Tebow and Ryan Leaf, white QB's that never played well.

I thought this article was much more fair in its assessment:
Cam Newton criticized while Matthew Stafford ignored

Cam Newton and Matthew Stafford have both thrown five touchdowns and six interceptions this year. Both players were drafted with the No. 1 overall pick and play for teams expected to contend for the playoffs.

So why does it feel like Carolina Panthers QB Newton is getting roasted on a weekly basis while Detroit Lions QB Stafford's struggles slip under the radar?

Newton vs. Stafford: Who knows? Cam did bring steamer trunks of baggage with him. A lot of the haters kept their mouths shut last season. This year, I'm hearing a lot of I-told-ya-sos.

I can't say I blame 'em. Newton's numbers are roughly the same this year, but the sense of fun and optimism we Panthers fans had last season are gone. We've seen 2-and-14 very recently in Pantherland, and this season feels pretty much the same.

What the hell is up with Carolina's run option? That's fine if you're playing Ole Miss. Not the Dallas Cowboys.

True, but he uses his past experiences to automatically assume that is what is happening in every other circumstance which hurts his argument when it actually is the case.

People are criticizing him more than Stafford because of his attitude. He's a showboat when things are going well and a pouter when they aren't. Simple as that.

Also from the article:

We can hear the arguments already: The criticism is more about Newton's demeanor and his press conferences than his play. Watch a Matthew Stafford press conference. Once you wake up, explain to me how many games he won with his messaging. Press conferences are overrated and the selective soundbite choices from Newton often ignore the main takeaway. He's a bad loser. It needs to get better. He's 23. As weaknesses go, I'll take it. It's about how a quarterback plays that matters.

As a fan who doesn't pay too much attention to either the Carolina Panthers or the Detroit Lions my response is this:

Cam Newton sure had a great rookie season, I was hoping he'd continue his rise and not regress.

Who the hell cares about Matthew Stafford? Hasn't he been in the league for 3 years and most of the time he has been injured? Here is my gameplan for Stafford: THROW IT TO MEGATRON! Huh, he isn't doing good right now, maybe he should THROW IT TO MEGATRON!

TLDR version: I still have hope for Newton, while I don't care about Stafford.

You hate white people.

It's common here in Houston. Freebirds World Burrito is a way of life. The Super Monster size is easily bigger than Rice.

I like how unflappable about the whole thing Watt is. Dude seems to have a really good attitude.

No one outside of Detroit cares about Stafford in the least, whereas Cam Newton has been a national story for years. The press keeps reporting on the same people until we're sick of them.
