MS Licensing question

Since my boss is a bloody wanker I thought I would ask this here.

He asked me a few weeks ago to setup a Windows server to authenticate Windows 7 licenses we are getting for the office. I don't see any reason we need to do this. We already use MS Licensing server for our Server 2008, Server 2003, and Office licenses so why should we waste a server.

Today he sent me the KVM key and I found a place to "add open licneses" but when I click on that I see I need a License number and an authorization number. Can I contact MS and have them add the KVM to our companies account?

Thanks

Now when I dig a bit more on MS's licensing site I see this

"KMS: Key Management Service (KMS) allows organizations to activate systems within their own network, eliminating the need for individual computers to connect to Microsoft for product activation.

MAK: A Multiple Activation Key (MAK) requires each computer to connect to a Microsoft activation server one time. Once computers are activated, no further communication with Microsoft is required.

VL Key: A Volume License (VL) Key is used for volume activations."

The key he gave me is a KMS key does that mean I have to setup a licensing server?

When I look at our Sever 2008 licenses it has both a KMS and MAK key. These licenses were bought by the old boss. Does that mean he bought a different package?

I cant even get people at Microsoft to explain their licensing.. let alone figure it out for myself..

This may explain it in enough detail. If you already have a KMS server then you may not have to do anything.

The MAK and KMS keys are part of the same license so you could just ask for the MAK key and activate each one with that. I guess whether that's better than setting up a new server depends on how many you have to activate.

I am working through that now. Thanks.
