Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

I'll consider it for the next one, garion. I was worried the vid would be too short if I stopped after the one mission.

So, who's running out to back Sword of the Stars: The Pits on Indiegogo?

Yeah, I'll wait for the finished game.

And then wait another year.

Not this guy.

It's just not mainstream enough to get the serious funding these days.

I know you disagree, but I believe the reason it failed is because the original wasn't all that good. Independence War was very similar, but a great deal more fun.

Are....you....comparing Nexus to...Independence War?

I thought IW was a flight sim. That comparison is a bit apples and oranges, yes?

It is. And it is. And it hurts my brain a lot.

Although I will say some of the perks/gifts seem like they'd be nice to have.

For the love of God, don't do it!

At least they're being honest about kickstartering the game this time.

This just seems like a bad idea. There are a lot of great rogue likes out there. And just recently a space one (FTL) was released and two more are incoming (Cargo commander and something I forget). Although I will say some of the perks/gifts seem like they'd be nice to have.

Edit: Oh I'm not gonna kickstart it, I haven't kickstarted anything. I'm patient enough to wait for a game and then buy it.

We need more commercial roguelikes, for sure. I'm all in favor of this, but...

Exactly.

Of the top of my head of recent roguelikes: Cardinal quest, FTL, binding of issac, Dungeons of Dremora, 100 rogues, Spelunky. That and a few more coming out makes me feel the market is kind of saturated. Basically if they are going to make one, it's going to have to be fairly unique in some way for me to even bother paying attention.

Those games are distinct roguelike-likes to me. Much better than the differences between the Shiren, I MD and Izuna games.

Just saw this on green man gaming: http://www.greenmangaming.com/aliens-space-deals/
Aliens and space sale...

Some interesting stuff, space empires iv was not bad from what i played of the demo. Star ruler is definitely interesting (most of these mentioned at one time or another). Few other interesting ones too.

AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

NEW INFO ON THE NEW DISTANT WORLDS EXPANSION! OMGOMGOMG

Why in the name of all that is holy is this not on Steam? The success of the Paradox grand strategy games shows that there is a voracious market for titles like these just waiting to be exploited, and Steam is arguably the most visible marketplace for "long-tail" products such as these. Ah, well -- perhaps, just like Matrix Games, they are destined to live forever outside not only the gaming mainstream, but any sidestreams as well. But, but.. It worked for Paradox, it worked for Spiderweb...

Edit: Holy crap, they are Matrix Games. C'mon, guys, you're like the last holdout! Bigger marketplace plus the occasional lower prices equals vastly more sales and more profits.

Edit Edit: Interesting; Matrix sells AI War as well, but for twice the regular Steam price. Niche pricing indeed.

Part of why DW isn't on Steam is that their community and dev team are absolute douchebags whenever asked about it; at some point, a handful of us posted on the Matrix games forums and were mocked as being stupid because we dared to mention Steam.

Personally, I think DW is barely a game, and their insane pricing would make me dissuade anyone from playing it. There's a great counterpoint to be had from Veloxi, who loves it, but I've never been able to find $100 worth of fun in the series.

Different strokes man. Also, yeah, their pricing leaves a lot of us confused.

Ayuh. I have a ton of respect for your opinions on most space games. You're allowed to like stuff that I don't.

Aawwww, thanks man. *hugs*

Yeah I love distant worlds, but I'm starting to really dislike the company behind them...
Doesn't make a lick of sense to me, but hey it's their stuff if they want to stay super niche forever that's their deal. Just makes me sad and angry.

You're not alone in that.

BTW y'all, the full version of this fun Freelancer-esque game Zigfrak is now available:

http://www.desura.com/games/zigfrak

I had a fun time with the beta myself, for what it's worth.

Er, here's the official store page for Zigfrak

FastSpring, Desura, and GamersGate for now.

It appears you can download the game as a Demo and play for a while, and then pay to unlock the rest.

Can we get a progress report on Drox Operative and Starfarer? Haven't seen any news about them for a while now.

Drox Operative continues to be great and is only getting better. He's adding more and more functionality in with each beta patch.

Starfarer I don't recall hearing anything of late.

Starfarer is still moving along, the dev just likes to release larger updates rather than micro-updates. I quit reading the forum (just from lack of time, not from any negativity) but his latest blog post is here.

I have a blog you know. Where I post about this stuff. Nearly every day.

Seriously, as others have said, Drox is coming along splendidly. It's REALLY been improved from its initial beta, it barely feels like the same game now. Such a wonderful game.

Starfarer has seen far fewer updates, so I've had less of a sense of how the game has progressed, but there has been progression...
