Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

Really enjoying SPAZ right now - and my two Tylenol 3 pills. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I'm a little sickee.

And is this a spoiler? I will put it in Spoiler box.

Spoiler:

For some reason, maybe because you are pirates, some of the floating, evacuated crew you pick up, get thrown out of your airlock kicking and maybe screaming. But I guess in space people can only see you kick.

From the front lines it's SPAZ....

As the Terminator once said, "...the more I learn."

Love that gas bit when you blow up green barrels.

One question to SPAZ vets: What is a good research progression order? Should I be jack-of-all trades? Can I buy everything eventually? Should I stick with guns and shields until level whatever?

I don't know what a good order is but a jack of all trades approach usually isn't the best idea. I also don't know if you can buy everything eventually, but I would guess not. If you like to max out your shields, go for it, but keep in mind that having a level 4 in shields while having a level 1 capacitor isn't a great idea. Don't put a point in everything, but don't just min/max only two options. Take a look at the upgrades and see what you might want. Personally, I like turrets as aiming is a lot easier (ie. you don't do it, it does).

And if you find you aren't doing so great, well then just grind a little and go up another level or two and make some other choices. The game's pretty flexible in that you can practically grind to your heart's content. The whole zombie infestation thing might cause problems there, but like I said I have run into that yet and I've played quite a bit of the game.

Jeez do you guys need a SPAZ thread? :p

Do not mock our SPAZ love! It's a manly love (or womanly - I'm easy. Yes. Easy. In That Way.)

(if I'm rambling blame my antibiotics)

Hm, AI War sale on Steam until June 1....

Well worth it at the full price! Just played some this past weekend with all of the expansion ships activated. Got me a pair of sweet Golems and rampaged across the galaxy.

Well as soon as they release Space Pirates and Zombies on steam, they can have my money. Impulse is a no fly zone as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for the tip about SPAZ folks. It looks pretty cool!

Can I ask why people are leary of using Impulse? Is it just the inconvenience of launching another game store client, or is there something else missing from Impulse releases?

Impulse was purchased by Gamestop a couple months ago and the company has a pretty crappy reputation, especially towards PC gamers.

I too want SPAZ, but I'm waiting till it comes out on Steam.

Replace "comes out" with "on sale" and that's my opinion. It looks interesting but I already own Space Rangers 2 for this particular space itch.

Thanks, this is good to know. What a shame though.

According to their FAQ, http://spacepiratesandzombies.com/fa... GamersGate, and BMT Micro will also carry the game. Neither of those websites list the game though, so I guess Impulse is the only choice for now.

The closest comparison I can think of to this game is Escape Velocity or Weird Worlds. SPAZ is a lot of fun, though it has me wishing for something with deeper storytelling now. Something like... a Starcon 2 remake. I guess we can dream right?

I've already got soase on impulse , all galciv, and elemental (which with FE will hopefully be enjoyable) so impulse is hanging around a bit for me and went ahead and got SPAZ. Really enjoying it so far. I mean come on people its $15 to support a 2 man team and if you really want just create a steam shortcut to launch the game, theres no multiplayer nor is it planned.

So is SPAZ better than Space Rangers 2? Hell, I might get both, but I'm just curious now.

Also how bad is the Gamestop purchase of Impulse? Are they promising draconian DRM measures or other such things?

I'll support them when the game is released, on any other platform but Impulse. Gamestop can have my money when they pry it from my cold, dead hand.

SoaSE is thankfully the only game I ever bought from Impulse, and it's patched and up-to-date, so I will never have to install Impulse again. And if Stardock wants me to purchase the next Sins, they'll wise up and release it on more than just Impulse.

The only change so far is that they have killed the affiliate program. Where GWJ used to get some % or something when we used the link here to install the Impulse client, now that program is gone.

No one really knows what the future holds. But Gamestop as a whole is a despicable enough company that I'd rather not deal with them ever.

Pretty much this. Plus the fact that I like steam. I don't want to have to have 17 bazillion game stores on my pc and find out which one I bought x game from and play on y platform.

And 15 bucks is still 15 bucks. Great that they are a 2 man team. I've supported the magicka dudes and also the Anomaly Warzone Earth dudes.... on steam. Release to steam and I'll give them some of my hard earned money.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that ... SR2 is a different beast all together, though shares a portion of its gameplay with SPAZ.

I just played through the SR2 and SPAZ demos. I did find SPAZ's real time space combat more satisfying than SR2's turn based combat.

One weakness of the SPAZ AI is that it's easy to distract the enemy by harassing them from behind with a Dart fighter when the rest of your fleet destroys them from the other side. Hopefully the SPAZ devs will improve the AI and/or add some difficulty levels.

Jumping in late to the conversation here. Trying to stick to Steam and am looking for something along the lines of Sins of a Solar Empire. I've had a few recommendations in the past, but nothing really jumped out at me when I played demos for them. Any suggestions?

On Steam ... hrmph. That's a hard one as most of my space games aren't on Steam.

AI War is quite different from Sins, but it's got the real time, semi-4x thing going on. It's on sale right now, I believe. Well worth every penny. I actually think it's a better game than Sins (I thought Sins was an absolute revelation when it came out), but each to his own.

Edit: Sword of the Stars is a good 4x game, though it's even more different than AI War in that SotS is turn based.

You might dig Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. It's very different from Sins in that you're not controlling huge fleets. I think of it like this. If Sins is like StarCraft, Nexus is like Dawn of War. Fewer units, a bit more tactical, each unit is more significant, ect. Don't know if there's a demo, but YouTube might be of some help to you.

Nexus The Jupiter Incident Demo

Only $10 on Steam.

Don't think I've tried that one yet, going to check it out.

Nexus is awesome! Its a real shame it didn't sell well. The developer makes handheld games now. But they put out a trailer showing the tech they would have used in the sequel and it was amazing.

It has a bug that makes you're game crash, try not to reload mid-mission saves.
