Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

Everspace 2 received a free major content update on Oct 2 that seems to have mostly flown under the radar. There’s another in the works slated for Spring 2024 release and a third for the Summer.

Lots of additions to story, new ship parts, item sets, catalysts, NPC perks, endgame content, and more.

Is it more than just a star trek reskin of Stellaris? Aren't there any Stellaris mods that do basically the same thing?

Well, the company doing it had access to the source code and was able to heavily modify some systems, and add a few new ones as well. Modders can't do that. So it's supposed to be a more complete conversion than just a reskin or an ordinary mod. But I returned it after it would not even start for me. I'm gonna try again in a few months.

At this point I have to talk about the targ in the room. Stellaris already has a Star Trek mod, so why should you pay for a game when a mod is free? Well Stellaris's New Horizons mod is a sprawling epic that covers the entirety of Star Trek history and every faction in the galaxy, while Infinite is focused on the Alpha and Beta quadrants of the Next Generation era, and frankly I think it's better for it.

Guys, GOG now has both Rules of Engagement games, two of the Breach games (three is missing for some reason) and all three Universe games!

https://www.gog.com/en/news/classic_...

I don't know what any of those are

Sigh.

The Universe series are open-world, kinda story-based space trading games. The Breach games are X-Com style games, while the Rules of Engagement games are detailed starship combat simulator games that can link up with Breach 2 for certain boarding missions.

All of these take place in the same...ahem...shared universe.

I played Breach back in the day. Bought it at a Software, Etc. on a trip to New Orleans. Looking at the screenshots brought backs some memories. Gotta love those CGA graphics.

Drox Operative 2 is down to $10 for the first time on sale at Steam until next Monday

Space Engineers

Free weekend on Steam.

Worth my time?

I don't think so, personally, but some would likely disagree.

It's certainly worth Free and a couple of hours to see if it grabs you. I loved building spaceships from scratch with ore I mined, refined, and parts I produced. I built stations and even coded a few things with their built in C# interpreter. I havent played a ton since they added all the planetary stuff but that seems interesting too.

Steam says I played 208 hours. I think if you like any survival/build/craft games its worth a try.

Looks like I put 60 hours into Space Engineers 4 years ago. I have no idea if they've been still working on it, but there wasn't much of a game there when I played. I could mine, I could craft, I built a ship... wasn't sure what else there was to it. I wanted to build an automated miner but had no idea how to do that or if it was possible.

Did the regular strategy catch all disappear? It's not showing up on google search results.

Edit: Found it using my computer's browser.

I was searching for a game I saw on steam. Story as I remember, you were one of the crew, but your mind have been transfert to the computer's ship, and you need to help rebuild the ship.

You could wake up crew member to help you, or use robots to get task done on the ship.

Not what you're thinking of, I'm sure, but this popped a memory bubble for Ironseed.

Gameplay:
The player begins with a single ship and a chosen crew. Planets are randomly generated and numerous ship designs and crew selection allow for different playing styles. Technology research, space exploration, resource management and gathering, production, crew management and alien diplomacy are essential elements. New ships, new upgrades, and ancient artifacts help the player in their efforts. Combat can be both in the form of random encounters or planned for by the player.

It sounds like Stardeus, actually.

Stardeus is a deep colony sim set on a broken starship manned by drones and hibernating human survivors. As the AI, have your drones repair your ship, save your crew and travel the stars in this beautiful simulation.

For those unaware, Star Fleet II - Krellan Commander version 2.0 released today. Congratulations to Veloxi for it finally releasing to the public!

Wow that takes me back. A long, long time ago I tried to get a contract to port the original Star Fleet II to the Atari ST. Sadly, didn't get to play around in the code.

Do missions still have a timer on them?

Yup, all of them. It's not a big deal though, and I hate timers in games.

What purpose do they serve?

(There's no way to tell on the internet, but that isn't a sassy question. I understand why the timers are present in Hardspace Shipbreaker, not so much why they are here)

Because this a Krellan simulator designed by Star Fleet to put you into the mind of a Krellan so as to help counter them when they decide to invade. The time limit keeps you focused and shows that you can get the job done without wasting time.

Trust me, I hate time limits, but they work here. The first mission gives you ten days to finish it, which is more than enough time. The last mission gives you 160 days, and you'll need all of them.

Thanks for the clarity!

Looks like a real labour of love - I hope it sells bucket loads!

Thank you!

Oh wonderful! I wrote them yesterday asking if they'd cover it and here we are.

Just saw that Helium Rain is now free on Steam. Worth a play?
