Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

Tried playing this with my Saitek x55 but it isn't being recognized.

Anyone know whether it can be played with the x55?

Playing what, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw?

RGO is definitely designed for a controller, I use a 360 controller.

I saved up and bought the Coyote

Now to get it outfitted, so much to upgrade now!

I've got the level 3 powercore and with how fast it is it's fun the zoom in close and unload a bunch of weapons.

Ah, I've used it with a stick no problem. Are there other controllers plugged in as well? That could cause issues. Also yeah, this thing is really best on a gamepad.

Yessss. A properly-fitted Coyote is a murder machine. Enjoy!

Emperor of the Fading Suns is now available on GoG for $5. Info on fan-made patches and mods is here. But you have to jump around links and read a lot to find them.

It's playable with mods, but if you're playing for the first time, definitely do vanilla first. It has problems, like the AI, but it's stil very playable. This will allow you to learn the game the way it was apparently designed, by hating the manual and the tutorials and failing multiple times. You can see me playing it a bit here.

@Veloxi - I've just about 100% Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, that was an excellent recommendation!

What Space Sim should I play next? I thoroughly enjoyed the space combat in RGO but I'm not one for mining or transporting freight. Any suggestions?

Have you played Hypergate?

Not yet but I'll check it out! Thanks again!

3030 Deathwar Redux?

Amazing game, but not really a combat-focused sim.

Yeah I'm in it for the dogfights in space leading to explosions that lead to profit.

Have you played anything in the "X" series?

OMG what? They don't want mining and hauling and you wanna recommend some of the most miney and hauley games in the genre? GETOUTTTAHEA.

Space Rangers 2! Always a valid choice.

It's all up to you. I only ever played those games as a dogfighter (and eventual capital ship commander) and left trading/mining to automated minions.

I haven't played X4, so X3 is my recommendation. Especially with a top-notch mod like Litcube's or that one Star Wars mod.

mrwynd, have you played Freespace 2? It's not blowing up ships for profit -- you're a military pilot rather than a freelancer -- but if anything has improved on its combat I haven't heard about it yet.

I'll second the un-recommendation for the X series. Combat in X4 is more interesting than in previous installments, but it's still much more about the economy than the pew-pew.

On edit: Ah, Litcube's Universe! That mod makes a combat-focused playthrough of X3 more fun and lucrative.

X4 is still economy-heavy but has a lot less running around the universe looking for the specific guns you want to outfit your ship. That's somewhat at the cost of fewer choices overall, but it does remove a frustration point. (One I removed with the cheat menu mod, to be fair.)

And if you don't mind going older, IWAR2 is very much about shooting spaceships for money.

Yeah I played a lot of combat in X3. I forget now but you could play some of the starts and go into the story missions and get some decent ship and weapon rewards, and just go right on fighting. And yeah upgrading to corvettes or capital ships and still picking fights was awesome.

I haven't played Freespace 2 in many, many years, I own it on GOG but haven't tried playing that version. A quick Google search shows an extensive mod scene.

I grabbed Knossos and I'm getting it setup now.

Freespace 2 is still the best there is. Bar none.

But it costs TEN DOLLARS.

Crying Suns finally got the advanced tactics update on mobile Friday.

Might do another run and check out new fighters and cap ship abilities.

So I just ordered a keyboard with side function keys so I could play Star Fleet II the way it's designed to be played:

So yeah, I am obsessed. Quite so.
