There aren't enough capital ship games period.

We need a Rebel Galaxy 2...but...umm...better....

I thought Starpoint Gemini 2 would tide me over but I just can’t get into it.

I'm curious. What does a Capital Ship game look like to you Gremlin?

Yeah, I'm curious as well. You talking single capital ship, or fleet? Not sure the fleet thing has been done that well since Nexus: Jupiter Incident.

I want to put the dividing line at ships that use indirect control rather than piloting with a joystick, but there aren't a whole lot of those and there's some direct-control stuff that does feel more capital-ship. So my messy categorization is games that make me feel like a starship captain rather than a fighter pilot.

There's a few games that are roughly in this space, like FTL, Artemis, and some of the Star Trek games, but even then it's not quite the same thing.

Plus, things like Homeworld mess up this categorization. I'm not looking for an RTS. There's also some RPG stuff that's roughly in this space (Starflight, Star Control, and even a bit of Mass Effect) but not much that embraces the sim part in the same way that Everspace or Freespace put you in the pilot's seat.

I don't recommend EVE, anymore... to anyone - it took me long enough to quit that addiction, but hey man, if that's your thing... *shrug*

Fractured Space... maybe?

Pulsar: The Lost Colony?

Klingon Academy was a little too "flight sim-y" to fit your description. (you already mentioned Star Trek games,so you probably included this)

Rules of Engagement is still the best.

I originally got into X2 with the specific draw of being able to do Capital Ship stuff. X3 fulfills that even more, because the better tech means that the Capital Ships are able to be much, much bigger than fighters. Understand though, that--without cheating--it will take you a large amount of time to get up to those capital ships.

Here is a scale comparison:
IMAGE(http://i.imgur.com/cfiNC3w.jpg)

Below those three ships on the left you see some of the smaller ones. The 4 on the right are "M6s" they are the heavy corvettes. Those little guys are larger than the fighter craft, they can't dock on carriers, stuff like that. They are significantly stronger and larger than fighters. That tiny little dot labeled "Argon Buster" is the common starter craft. A light fighter.

And that graphic doesn't even include the Terran capitals...

That's because it's the X3 non-expansion version. The ones from later on that needed more ships didn't have anything smaller than an M6 for scale, and I could find one that had the M6s and fighters to bridge the gap. That one in the very middle is a Terran ship though. IIRC it shows up in the final reveal at the end of the story.

Capital ships...

That got me thinking about an old failed kickstarter called Contact Vector. Looked super cool. Did anything ever come of it?

Did some digging, and back in 2014 when the Kickstarter failed the developer mention on the forum there that they planned to take a break and attempt to put it back up for a second Kickstarter. From what I can tell that was posted in 2014.

Check out Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock. It'll have your cap ships.

I'm waiting for a VR game where you can stand on the bridge of your capital ship and give voice commands to a crew and the captains of other ships in your fleet. That'd be sweet.

Better than Rules 2? Rules 1 is a lot simpler which, given that game's controls, is probably a blessing. I think I enjoyed reading the instruction manual and dreaming about commanding the ships more than actually playing the game.

After I watched Veloxi's run with Derek Smart on his channel I noped right out of picking it up. It looked interesting, but if The Space Game Junkie needs that kind of tutorial, then I'm looking at months of trying to figure it out.

I meant the RoE series as a whole, of which Rules of Engagement 2 is still the better of the two. It's an intense game, but it's SO SATISFYING.

It's also I think the first Let's Play series I did.

Every time I look at that a UI designer rolls around in their grave.

Oh come now, it was amazing.

You play Eve Online, too?

That was why I quit EvE online.

Actually it is pretty elegant UI, especially for its time. Everything on the screen is well placed, everything is color-coded and nothing is on there that you will not end up using. Both Rules of Engagements were awesome.

A gaming regret I have is that I never got Breach2 or 3 and hooked it into ROE2 for sweet boarding actions.

The boarding action was, indeed, super sweet.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew no longer requires VR

Anyone tried it? Recommended?

Yes, I want to feel like a captain instead of a pilot/gunner.

I don't want a RTS or other strategy game. I never want to control more than one ship at a time. I do like to have direct control of how the ship moves but I could live without that if I had to. I definitely don't want twitchy fast moving ships like fighters. I don't want to be aiming all the guns but I do want to be able to define the firing strategy. A mix of automation and control.

Oddly enough FTL is probably the closest I've found to what I want even though it is not exactly right. I want longer build up over time and I enjoy single player campaigns. FTL is pretty great though.

I enjoyed Rebel Galaxy but it is too simplistic. Not enough depth to the combat. Not enough RPG elements. I like having a campaign but it ultimately got boring by the end. I've heard Starpoint Gemini 2 is a deeper Rebel Galaxy but I haven't been able to get into it. Going to give it another try soon.

I really enjoy the combat in Dreadnought and the "feel" of the big ships is awesome but the pure multiplayer focus loses me.

The 2005 Sid Meier's Pirates used to be one of my favourite games and I've always wanted a space game like that but with deeper combat and RPG elements.

While not really matching up with much in the rest of your post, the space version of Pirates! is definitely Space Rangers 2 HD.

Ok thanks, I’ll check that out.

For some reason I’ve always grouped ship games like Pirates together with space capital ship games in my head. The more ponderous movement control in combat. Broadsides. Boarding. Playing as a captain. Managing crew. That sort of stuff.

You might wanna try Icarus Starship Command Simulator. It's basically all that.

Another vote for Space Rangers 2. So ambitious, so crazy, so much fun.

Sort of like a Submarine Commander game in space. We really need a Rules of Engagement update.
