Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

I'm also hoping the game pops back up for sale on GOG, Steam, GamersGate and so on, since it oddly disappeared last year.

Yes indeed! They've verified that the new game is going to use Steamworks. Not sure about the original.

Release version of the game will be available sometime in Q1 of 2013 simultaneously in Russian and English. You will be able to purchase the game in retail stores and through Steam as well.
Both digital and retail editions will be protected with Steam DRM.

Booooh. Yah. Time to find a press contact.

The Sword of the Stars series is 75% off on Gamersgate -- should I get the "Complete Collection" or just I or II?

Man, I loved Space Rangers, looking forward to the sequel very much. It may tide me over nicely into Bioshock.

Get the complete one for $6, that's an amazing god damned deal. A lot of folks believe the first game is better, but they're steadily patching the second one, so it might be worth checking out.

How is the new Space Rangers related to II? Last I heard they were fixing it up to be less buggy and less Engrish. Is this the final result or is this a new game?

It's a new version of II with updated graphics, new features and expanded piracy options I believe. It's not SR3. It's like SR2.75

Is Sword of The Stars 2 good now? It's really cheap and my finger is quivering over the buy button.

It's playable at least, but it's polarizing. Folks either love it or hate it. It's SO cheap there I'd say get it and find out for yourself, because it's a massive game.

Oh, crud, I've already bought that game twice, I don't want the same thing a third time, even if it's a little improved.

Only a little? heh.

I played it several times but never got to the end because I kept running into bugs.

Yeah from what I remember the game can be really hard to beat unless you get equipped well enough. With the best way to make money is the text adventures, low risk high payout and fun. Dealing with the replicators themselves was also damn hard, but they drop decent loot. Scavenging after a large battle get's you decent stuff. I tried playing a trader once, but I just couldn't make it work. The updates look interesting but since that would mean replaying the text adventures I'm not sure how much I wanna buy it again. Also then ending is minor and silly, but amusing.

Part of the problem for me is that in order to advance the war effort you basically gather up replicator bits and turn them into science stations, sometimes for a reward. But either the combat was too hard/I had no backup and fighting them was suicide. Or there were so many friendly ships around that they snatched up everything and I never got the change to collect them.

Yeah you really can't do combat until you have some really good weapons and gear. Wormholes help as they give decent stuff and it relies on more arcade skills then anything. Getting the hacks that you can send also help out a whole lot. Still early on it's a lot of luck getting good stuff and hoping for the best. Really until you can handle yourself in a fight I would do nothing but easy missions to get better gear. Interestingly enough I think this helps you and your allies as the tech level of the replicators doesn't advance as fast as yours when leveling.

Hey guys, two podcasts for one this week. We talk to Michael Juliano, the developer of Rogue System, about his game and his Kickstarter:

http://www.spacegamejunkie.com/podca...

This was the second of three podcast eps we recorded this week. The third was with OMG CHRIS FREAKING ROBERTS OMG. That one will go live on Monday,

Thanks, and enjoy!

I just saw Stardrive get added to steam. That's the one with grid-based ship building right? Do we have a thread for that yet?

Finally! I've been waiting for that after passing/missing the Kickstarter.

It was a kickstarter?! Dammit I missed that one too! I totally would have put some money in, just like FTL.

Looks really fun regardless, I just might pre-order. But I've been burned by that in past so I'll wait for some impressions first.

I picked it up this evening. The tutorial videos are good Thats about as far as I got.

I grabbed it as I posted earlier but haven't had a chance to fire it up. Hurray for snowbound weeekends though!

Any thoughts on Stardrive yet guys?

I wrote a preview a while back, really liked it then. I'd link to it but I'm on my phone.

It's on my wishlist.

Veloxi. Enjoy. (I don't subscribe to pic thread so here it goes)

Will you do another? As much as I love all things space I'd really like to hear some impressions before I shell out 25 bucks.

Yeah, totally planning on it.

I really enjoyed episode 2, I want to play a few of those games just for the soundtrack. Thought I would throw out Haegemonia for having an incredible soundtrack. Legions of Iron has some great pieces (battle music, the last couple ambient pieces), and the little bit of new music in the expansion isn't bad either.

It's nice to see dedication to the Homeworld series, though this is really overly ambitious.
