X Wing Miniature Game

What does everyone use for a board? My friend uses a piece of black cloth. I was thinking of getting a 30"x30" board and painting it black.

Felt or craft foam helps a lot to prevent accidental "bumps" (or rubber feet when using a smooth surface). Also, rigging up some weights on the bottom of the bases helps. My buddy was pretty ambitious and built a custom 3' x 3' metal board, framed it and covered it with black felt. He's now working on putting magnets on the bases. It looks awesome.

So I won my very first game last night. Granted it was:

a) against my son
b) he's 10
c) we were playing with the basic ruleset
d) I'm pretty sure he was tired
e) he kept trying to run away with his X-wing and only attacked once

But, hey, a win is a win!

Release date was actually yesterday. Picked up one of each ship I didn't win at a Kessel Run event. Going to study the Interceptor cards to see how many more I need to get.

The problem is that I don't have those!

Wow, the Falcon and Slave I models look great. Must resist.

Drool..........

So now that the expansion ships are out, how are people enjoying them? I got to touch (grope) my friend's ships but we didn't have time to play a game.

I got a game in with my son, I ran 2 A-Wings and Lando in a YT-1300 vs his Firespray, TIE Interceptor and 2 TIEs. The YT is a beast when it comes to dealing damage; having a 360 degree firing arc with three dice is really dangerous, but the 1 defensive die it pulls in a huge amount of firing interest, and the shields go down fast. The A-Wings are really fun to fly, and as a Rebel player, getting a ship with so much speed and evasiveness feels like heaven. They need their defensive dice, because a couple of bad rolls can really make them vanish quickly, but with boosting and evasion they can buy themselves time. It is hard to take out a TIE in an A-Wing due to the low attack dice, but they pair off nicely vs the Firespray.

They sell the base game at Target! Got that tonight, along with a Game of Thrones game (will be returning that one, it's not so good) Already had to explain to the gf that I'll be adding expansions, she enjoyed the quick start game, but she's not TOTALLY on board with it yet.

I've watched a few Youtube videos on this game, an official "how to play" piece and several demo games, but I haven't been able to locate anything on the WotC Star Wars Starship Battles miniatures game. Any idea if it plays similarly to this or is it a completely different beast? I love the look of this game though I'd also like to try to capital ship style engagements.

This weekend, I participated in one of the first of the 2013 Regional Tournaments for this game in Westborough, MA. It... didn't go too well for me, but it was still fun. I got a practice run in the night before, running a Rebel Squad of Lando in the Millennium Falcon with Nien Nubn and a Gunner, Biggs in his X-Wing and a Gold Squadron Y-Wing Pilot with an Ion Cannon. My kid (and a friend) took Boba Fett and a TIE Interceptor plus an elite TIE against me, and I basically destroyed them, not one of my ships was missing its shields before I took out all of them, so I was feeling pretty good about it.

My first match was against the guy who wound up coming in 4th (out of 19 players). He was flying a lot of TIEs: 2 Interceptors and 4 regular TIEs, with Howlrunner (who lets his ships within Range 1 reroll a die against me) as one of the 4 TIE Fighters. The first batch of shots was a pretty good indication of how the match would go: I got all three ships able to fire at a couple of his, all to no effect; and he was able to strip Biggs' shields before the third round started. It did take him a whole extra round to actually polish off Biggs, but his combined fire and better-than-average luck made short work of my fleet. I wasn't able to get the kind of focus fire I wanted, so in the end I only took out his Interceptor and conceded defeat when I had my Y-Wing left, about to be in three TIEs' firing lane. I had one or two damage on three of his remaining ships, but could never land the damage I needed to save my bacon. All in all, I felt like I flew well, and the dice were just not with me; while my opponent flew expertly and his dice were at least average.

My second match was a tad frustrating. My opponent flew Han Solo and Lando Calrissian. Just the two YT-1300s, 16 hull points, 10 shields, 6 attack dice and a LOT of rerolls and focus tokens. I should have had this match, but it was pretty sickening how well his dice were rolling. I managed to tag Lando with two Ion shots, getting him parked on top of an Asteroid! He rolled a blank for damage. He hit it so perfectly, that his next action would also go through the asteroid: another perfect roll. He got both of his ships nice and tight to my formation, forcing him to attack Biggs and leave my other two ships alone: he has Han shoot first (with a Focus token, just in case), and he rolls 1 hit and three Critical hits. No need to use Han's re-roll ability, no need to use the Focus token; Shields are down, hull is down, Biggs is out of the fight. Lando now shoots at my Lando, he rolls one crit and 3 Focus... but he has a Focus token, so it also becomes 4 hits. I roll 1 Evade, and keep one shield point until Han's next turn. In the time he shot down all three of my ships, I managed to erase all of his Shields, and do 8 total Hull points, but only 3 on Lando, and only 5 on Han - a total loss for me.

The third match was my first win, sadly it was against a friend of mine, and I can't even take total credit for it. He was flying Darth Vader and the two named TIE Interceptor pilots, so all of my ships would act before his, and fire after his. I used my Y-Wing much more aggressively than most people expected, and used Biggs as a long-range decoy - which was my plan in all of my matches. In this case, it helped that I could park my ships where I guessed he wanted his, and was able to remove the ability for him to take actions a few times; good thing, too, because he had a really strong feel for excellent barrel-rolls and boosts, making my ships feel severely threatened every round. I didn't have a chance to use Biggs' gun until the 4th round thanks to his ship placement, but my Falcon and Ion Cannon were able to keep the pressure on. In the 4th round, I finally lined up a shot for Biggs, and I made it count. Close range, with a Target Lock and a Focus (thanks Lando!), I rolled one Crit, and three misses, which I rerolled with the Lock. He remembered to use his evasiveness on the resulting Hit that paired the two Focus, and I got another Focus. With 3 Hits and a Crit, he needed a really good defensive roll, which he almost got: 2 Evades - leaving his Interceptor with 1 Hull point left, and a critical effect that caused one damage if he overlapped any ship. I then scored an Ion hit on the other Interceptor, leaving it to drift in front of an asteroid. Lando moved in the way of Vader, so Vader lost his next action, and the back-up caused the Critically wounded Interceptor to take its last damage. The other Interceptor got hit once by Lando, and next turn took its last damage on the asteroid. At this point, my friend gave up the win, I still had shields on the Falcon and the Y-Wing, and Biggs had only taken one hull damage.

My final match was a nail-biter, going down to the last round of shots. My squad versus 4 A-Wings; two of which had Concussion Missiles. He opened up with Concussion attacks, stripping the Y-Wing and Falcon of shields by the second round. I stupidly placed Biggs too far away from them, so he didn't have to use those on the one target. Once the initial blast was over, it was a war of attrition; I caused his best pilot to get parked on an Asteroid (twice - again!) with an Ion, which destroyed him. I lost my Y-Wing's Ion Cannon with the very first Hull damage, picking up a Critical hit that removed a Secondary weapon - this would be my first time (ever) flying a Y-Wing with no Ion, against the most maneuverable ships in the game - it looked bad. I somehow managed to score two hits (the most possible with a Y-Wing) at Range 3, through an asteroid. Apparently, this guy has the same bad relationship with dice I do, what are the odds of not one out of his five dice would be either an evade or focus? Don't tell me the odds: I just saw a Y-Wing win a dogfight with an A-Wing, that is never happening again. In the end, I couldn't land the last hit I needed on his last, wounded A-Wing, I had two rounds of Falcon fire with 6 damage against his A-Wing with one hull point left, and still lost it. It was a good battle, though.

All in all, I missed out on getting a really cool "Crash Coin" thanks to my one win, and placed 17th out of 19, but it was still fun.

Awesome writeup, thanks! Need to get my hands on a Falcon some time.

So for those of you that follow the game, Wave 3 ships were announced

B-wing
Tie bomber
Lambda Shuttle

and ..

The Moldy Crow (HWK-290)

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=4116

I'm really liking what they are doing with this game and am looking forward to getting some new ships...

I was right about the Tie B and Bwing, LOVE the shuttle and the Moldy Crow is awesome! Not just for the model, BUT it opens up some of the EU ships

Very cool. Haven't picked any of the Wave 2 models up yet, but I was kinda hoping Wave 3 would come soon so I could pick and choose the best of them combined.

Yea, I'm looking forward to seeing what the movement dial is on the Shuttle ... It'll be quite OP if they give it too much maneuverability..

Looks like the main hobby sites have the pre-orders up for the ships: B-Wing, HWK-290, TIE Bomber and Lambda Shuttle. Same price points as the Wave 2 ships, Miniature Market was the cheaper than CoolStuffInc, and listed them as available. It's who I pre-ordered Wave 2 from, and they got them to me maybe 2 days after CSI deliveries arrived for people.

The base game is on clearance at Target for $19.99. I have to buy it, right?

Do you have someone to play with? If so, then yes!

If not, then yes! Just go find someone!

It can be an expensive crack habit, however.

Boughten. Think I'm going to have to play it solo to get a feel for the rules, before I sit down with my boy to play it.

The basic rules are very simple. You can probably learn it well in half an hour.

I played it for the first time yesterday at the PAXAUS TT hall. Very easy to come to grips with.

My initial opponent rolled nothing but hits and crits or dodges while I rolled nothing every time. Oh well. It was fun.

I just got into this (yeah, late to the party...) and stumbled across that: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVfy...
Think that it might be useful to others who just start out.

Checked the rest of the thread and as far as I could see, no one posted the last tabletop featuring the game along with Wil Wheaton and Seth Green doing awkward Obi Wan impressions!
