Random thing you love right now that doesn't deserve its own thread

Free BBQ at work today and I am not involved in setting up or grilling the food. YAY!

the best kind, unless it's on my barbecue, then BACK OFF!

Just had a nice start to long holiday weekend. Had margararitas by the pool
all day with my awesome wife. Now I'm barbecuing some chicken with a gourmet roasted apple marinade, and then... more drinks!

Tomorrow is burgers and hot dogs all day.

Hope everyone who is celebrating Independence Day in the US has a safe and happy fourth!

July 4th pool party with friends.

Just spent the last 4 hours sipping drinks while swimming (mostly floating) in the pool. In an hour, the girlfriend and I are eating for free at a steakhouse thanks to a gift card from my brother, given to me for my birthday a few months ago. Tomorrow pretty much the same thing (without the steakhouse). Then a party with friends on Saturday.

Good times.

Actually, I would have loved to have a pool today--it was way too hot to be outside hanging out on my deck. Those burgers 'n dogs ain't gonna cook themselves, though!

Due to a miscommunication, I thought someone wanted me to start the firepit going at 5pm. When it was 91 degrees out.

Kept that thing going straight through until 9pm, and even revived it from coals after the requisite marshmallow roasting.

Tonight ends with me drinking bourbon and reading John Scalzi.

Ditto for me, except replace the Scalzi with Warren Ellis.

Better than drinking Scalzi and reading bourbon, I guess.

Spoiler:

I mean, Scalzi might just be into that kind of thing...

And now I want Bourbon, but I'll end up reading parenting books.

I <3 the Aquabats even though they got miffed when I stepped on their screen.

Despicable Me 2... so funny. Plenty of jokes for the adults, just like old Looney Tunes shorts.

I'm really looking forward to this. I loved the first one.

My July 4th was awesome.

I hiked 3 miles up a mountain, ran the 3 miles back down, then rode 40 miles in glorious sunshine on my bike. At the halfway turnaround, I rolled into a quaint rural town of Arlington, WA, where the July 4th parade was in full flow. I looked down to see that I was wearing my United Kingdom bike jersey that is basically a giant Union Jack.

Whoops.

Hope you told anyone who asked that no, we don't want them back.

Next time you're in Arlington, do yourself the favor and go to the local airport and go across the street to Skookum Brewery. They have really good beer. And let me know, I may be across the street in the airport working on a plane and I'll join you.

Unfortunately, the only time I'm in Arlington is when I'm out on a blistering training ride, with at least 20 miles to go. Which is one of the very rare times in my daily life when a beer is out of the question.

My sister has an awesome pit bull named Chaos. Great with the kids, but he's a little chickens**t when it came to the cats. And he's smart too, only person he growled at was my brother* when he came by to pick up his kids.

*This is the douchenozzle who molested me as a kid and to whom I haven't spoken in about 2 and a half years. I half hoped he'd bite the bastard, or at least gnaw and his bony chicken legs a bit.

Damn you.

Department happy hour was supposed to be cancelled, but no one bothered to cancel the recurring order of beer. So my lab found several cases of cold beer stacked and waiting for us that no one really expected to be there. We now have a fridge full of beer at work. Best happy hour ever.

Kicked off my two week vacation by taking my two youngest children along with my niece and nephew to the drive in theatre. It was very crowded but they had a good time sitting on top of our minivan to watch the double feature.

Also was kind of bummed to see that unless they raise approx. $140,000 to convert their equipment to all-digital it will probably be the drive-in's last season. I'm chipping in a few bucks, would hate to see one of the only 300+ drive in theaters left in the country close.

I absolutely love going to the drive in! Unfortunately the one near me closed last year when the owner died (and they're apparently turning it into a parking lot for a new shopping center :/) and the one back home where I grew up got trashed in the OKC tornados in May. Not a good time for drive in theaters I guess.

We have now officially signed on for our new home insurance and life insurance policies that cover our mortgage. Those who follow the loathe thread will see that I was furious a while back because no one would insure our new house while I continued to run my side business unless I took out corporate liability insurance I didn't need and which would cost as much as my side business profited last year. We found a new insurance person who was able to get their underwriters to approve me, as long as I signed a clause that said my business was not covered (which is all I wanted to begin with.) So we get our required house insurance and I don't have to close my side business! Damn awesome!

2:28 to beat, fun stuff!

Just spent a truly wonderful weekend in Brooklyn with the lady. Earlier today went to brunch with some friends prior to heading home. After waiting a bit we were finally seated. We sat down and who's sitting at the table to our right munching bacon and reading the paper, but none other than Sir Patrick Stewart himself! Thankfully we managed to hold in our nerdgasms till he left but goddamn it was the coolest thing ever!

That's fun! I'm working my way through The Next Generation right now for the first time, so it would have been difficult for me to contain my excitement.

My chili, which should be ready to eat in about 20 minutes

Edit: Ermahgerd. So good Tweaks to the recipe this time involved:

Soft corn tortillas, ground cloves, pomegranate molasses, and a bit of ground coffee

Second Edit: Also Kittylexy's home made coffee ice cream

Same here. I'm about to start the 3rd season. I never really got into Star Trek until I started dating my current girlfriend. She got me into Next Gen, I got her into Battlestar. So far we're both happy campers.

Oh wow. Kudos to you and your lady, Radicalans. I grew up with TNG (OMG, how come you and tuffalo hadn't seen it before, it's the best ST series of all time!!!!!!! ), and would've been extremely hard-pressed to contain my kaploding nerdgasm. And ever since I started following him on Twitter and learning about all the great work he does to help battered women... My admiration just got kicked up another notch. Great actor *and* a good person, can't beat that.

My own love: My little monkey's fever broke this morning, hooray!!
