Candlepins are second only to Duckpins, and only because I grew up with Duckpin bowling. Great stuff and even more fun in the original surroundings. I'm there for it!

I can confirm it’s great.

Me too, buddy!
They started a few weeks ago but I got a letter today talking about them sending out construction and what we could expect. I had assumed that's what it was because I got an interest postcard right before they showed up.
Now I'd like to get on the list for installation ASAP

So envious. ENVY ENVY ENVY
Gotta say though, I'm super happy with Verizon's home internet over 5G. Bandwidth isn't great, but I'm only one person in an apartment so I don't have to worry about multiple UHD streams sucking up all the bits.

I'm on T-Mobile's flavor, and yes it's excellent for streaming, downloads, everything... except gaming. My Rocket League ping has been trash for 6 months now, and I avoid most other twitchy online stuff. So I'm looking forward to switching. They have a 500Mbs version that is the same price as the 5G thing. I want gigabit but I can be fiscally responsible for a bit...
Google fiber is coming. They already installed the pipes/lines on the main road, and the actual housing development street is all spray-painted up marking existing pipes. Which I assume is for the Google Fiber install, but man they're taking their time.
I look forward to the call to Comcast telling them I'm dumping them.
FYI Comcast and Spectrum don't prorate anymore. So figure out your billing date and cancel a few days ahead of time. Otherwise they will charge you a full month after you cancel.

Maybe I'm lucky but I haven't noticed any issues with driving games.
I don't play stuff like Rocket League or any multiplayer shooters, though, so I'm a good candidate for a maybe mid ping connection. The most important thing for me is that it has been rock solid, after a few pains shortly after installation that were solved by Verizon changing something in their configuration of my service. Comcast used to drop me for several hours most Sunday nights and occasionally midweek late at night. Late at night is when I do most of my gaming and stream watching.

Thanks for the tip.
Yeah, fiber is Real Nice.
My (small local) ISP recently bumped my service up from 300 Mbps to 500 for the same price. I think that's a good level for my current needs, but in case I change my mind, they advertise speeds up to 10 Gbps...

Oh yeah, we're on Spectrum cable right now. Thanks for the heads up. Honestly, it's fine, but they keep jacking the price, so it'll be nice to have a much better alternative so we can waffle back and forth between deals (yeah, we won't go back to cable). When we switch to fiber, it'll be locked for 2 years. We'll probably go with the 940 Mbps for $65 a month. There is one tier above that, but I'm not a power user anymore.
I just want to run an internet speed test and see big upload bandwidth.
Love how everyone else is also interested with fiber. Our disaster front yard got further disastered by this project. Thankfully the whole thing got dug up a couple months ago in order to repair a root through main sewer. Fiber for is was destiny in 2023!
Stumbled across this the other day, and it's pretty cool: The Linkfest
The opposite of doomscrolling: Every week (roughly) I send you a collection of the best Internet reading I've found -- links to culture, technology, art and science that fascinated me.I'm Clive Thompson, a longtime science and tech reporter (Wired, New York Times Magazine), book author (Coders) and blogger. You can reach me at [email protected] or on Mastodon.
The latest linkfest includes these crazy not-QR-code-looking QR codes:
And a sample of output from a 17th century Chat GPT experiment:
User: Why has the Moon such an influence upon Earth?
Monad-GPT: But the Moon is so neer to us, as almost to be part of Earth; and therefore it much influences our Atmosphere. This Influence makes all that are in any way affected by Air, to be more under her influence than any other Planet. For if there were a little more or less Matter in the Air, than there is now, we should never have such Plants and Creatures as there are upon Earth: for every Plant and Creature hath its proper Temperature necessary for its Existence. If the Sun did not make up this shortage by his warmth from without, we should be destroyed.

This happened to me 3 years ago. They laid it through my back yard so I assumed we would be getting it soonish. I talked to one of the contractors and they told me it was for AT&T so I got excited since Cox has a stranglehold in some parts of this city. I don't have an issue with them as a company, but their pricing is worse than AT&T. I got excited for a while but then nothing came of it. 3 years later and it's still not available in this area. I heard from someone on the HOA board that it was installed for the school down the street. Damnit.
BUT! Right now, Windstream is laying fiber in the neighborhood and it will be available some time in December. BOOYA! Windstream as a company doesn't have a good reputation around here, but the people I know with their fiber are happy with it.

Alia Shawkat.
Watching Macy's parade and I'm laughing at myself as it's now a weird mix of Gen X acts and Broadway shows I've never heard of, instead of Boomer acts and Broadway shows I've never heard of.
I mean they still had Cher out there near the end. And I saw Chicago at one point.
Our fibre is different to US standards sadly. We get around 120mbps maximum for standard residential connections. Still, that's plenty for our needs at home. Can't do much about international multiplayer ping though, tyranny of distance being what it is. Commercial grade can obviously go higher but yes I had an office in an older building in the heart of our Sydney business district and it didn't even have a cable connection.
And I saw Chicago at one point.
Saturday in the park?
You think it was the 4th of July?
The Taskmaster S16E10 final episode was hilarious. I won't say more so you can discover it yourselves. What a great series.

My cousin and her husband were on one of the floats... the one that, for some reason, combined the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Bell Biv DeVoe.
Hey I loved that BBD TMNT float. Hit me right in the 1990.

Same. I was like, what's with all the 80s and 90s stuff, but I enjoyed it immensely.
Gotta do the oldies.
When you see Depeche Mode or OMD on a float, then you can cry.

It was indeed.
Edit: I’m led in bed on a Sunday morning doing Wordle (done in three lines :flex emoji:) and reading the forums with little Flynn curled up next to me and occasionally letting out little sighs of contentment.
Hey, I wrote a book, and it's out as of today. It's really good. You should order it if you like fantasy with a touch of horror, frozen nightmarish worlds, and/or helping a fellow Goodjer realize a dream.
I read it, it's good!
