Could I have baked beans instead of the Spam then?

(Imagine if junk email was called baked beans…)

I used an online tool a few years ago called calligraphr to make a font with my handwriting so I could use it to letter my comics. I like the font in general, but it has a few things that are nagging me, so now I'm getting around to rework it.

Originally I was going to do it with FontForge, which is clunky as fück (and, as far as I know, does not work well on a Mac). I did some digging, and found that Affinity Designer (which I already have a license for) and something called Glyphs mini (which I will probably need to buy a license for, but it's not that expensive and I can pass it off as a business expense) can make the whole process way easier (especially since I can use the original font I created as a base, convert each glyph to curves, and rework those).

Surprisingly, I'm having fun! I'm also learning a lot about working with the pen tool. And how to make fonts.

I just made an amazing frankensandwich.

French baguette
Mashed avocado
Olive tapenade
Boquerones
Arugula
Tomato
Fig balsamic vinegar
Truffle oil

It was an explosion of umami

Tasty!

Ha! This week's guest on the Off Menu podcast is Garth Marenghi! Just to be clear, not Matthew Holness, but Garth "I know authors who use subtext, and they're all cowards" Marenghi. https://shows.acast.com/offmenu/epis...

EDIT: I think maybe people aren't familiar with it. In the early noughties, there was a C4 comedy programme about a hack horror writer called Garth Marenghi who made a terrible horror series set in the 80s called Darkplace. So there's 2 levels to it - the real comedic actors (Matthew Holness, Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry and Alice Lowe) playing fake authors / money people / actors (Garth Marenghi, Dead Lerner, Todd Rivers and Madeline Wool ) playing fake hospital staff (Rick Dagless, Thornton Reed, Lucien Sanchez and Liz Asher). It has clips from the awful show and interviews with the fake cast.

Me and the mrs went to see Garth on his book tour of Incarcerat on Halloween.

His earlier book, Terrortome, is $1.99 on Kindle at the moment. (295 pages so no, not a short story.)

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1. So good. Haley Atwell was a brilliant addition to the cast. Best ’barely in control‘ driving face since De Niro in Ronin.

I gotta say, since Cruise & McQ have fully taken the reins (in 2015, Rogue Nation, MI-5), the Mission Impossible franchise is on track to give Marvel’s Infinity Saga a run for its money.

De Palma’s MI was in 1996!

Cruise is sooo young (comparatively.)

And we all just pretend the 2nd one never happened.

Woo! At least it did okay at the box office.

Thank goodness for Philip Seymour Hoffman. Whoever was responsible for casting him saved the franchise, because he basically carried the 3rd movie. I miss his performances.

I just decided to all of the Mission impossible movies. Watched the first one last night, 2nd is on the list for tonight or Tomorrow. I’ll have to report back on how it compares.

This makes me want to rewatch the old series from the 60's and 70's. I love that show so much, even though it has not aged well at all.

I watched all the Mission Impossible movies earlier this year, and the earlier two feel like such outliers compared to the last few in the franchise. MI:4 aka Ghost Protocol is where it felt like they really figured out the formula, and Rogue Nation solidified it. Fallout is still my favorite, but they've all been good since at least MI:3. That said, they're very much fluff as far action movies go. I couldn't tell you the plot or important characters of a single one. They're the cherry coke of action movies: enjoyable and distinctive in the moment, but not something you think about again until you're at a restaurant with a soda machine offering it.

I still love the first. The way he thinks through the possibilities and tries to figure out who set him up is really well done. It was probably the smartest action film of the decade. So of course they dumbed down the 2nd one.

I rewatched all but 2 this year as well. Wife and kids were visiting her family for a few days and I had action movie weekend. It had mostly just been a while since 3-4 and I wanted to refresh myself before the new one. 3 may still be the best, great villain and the wife, stakes were high. That opening, my goodness. I'm not sure I could do a ranking though. I really have enjoyed them all (except 2) on some level.

Perhaps we could rank Final Fantasy games instead?

That's all I've played, although I own 8, 9 and X-2 of course. Missed the JRPG club replay of 9 earlier this year.

The first two are correct, and that's all that matters.

Spoiler:

14 and 10-2 are the next two, but I'm not sure of the order.

I think I'm considered a heretic in that I remove 7 and add 8. 15 is great, even if the plot is jank, if only for the core cast.

More on topic. I've really been enjoying dungeons and dragons. If you never had a chance to play I highly recommend it. Getting to play online in say roll20 is pretty easy.

Now if only getting a group of adults schedule to line up wasn't so hard.

I was reminded today that Veteran's Day is Saturday here in the US. I was also reminded that my company observes the holiday on Friday. But I am on four 10-hour shifts, MTWTh.

That means, for me and those in my company like me, we observe Veteran's Day on Thursday.

So my week is done at 5 pm today!

I did a rewatch this year as well, I had to abandon 2, it just was the culprit of throw enough money and cool at it to see how it goes. It's very late 90s early 2k feel.

I love the first move, such a fun watch and it's amazing the train sequence still looks good.

4 is pretty good, 5 really corrects course on what 4 kind of missed, formula is down pat. Cavil as the bad guy was great. I am sad he is dead. Like very very dead. Does he have a twin of equal capacity to add to future movies?

The M as in Mancy episode of Archer and that joke in general.

Farting.

When you fart you are farting on yourself.

I learned a true fart fact recently.

If you hold a fart in, it gets absorbed by your gut into your bloodstream, transported to your lungs, and ultimately you breathe out your own fart.

So let em rip, kids, else you have to have a mouthful of your own farts.

Full fibre broadband is being connected as I type this. 150mbps estimated speed. The house has been on ADSL since we moved in and is at least 2km from the nearest exchange so the buffering has been real bad.

It is such an amazing upgrade. Within a week you won't be able to live without it. You'll judge quietly at your friends who don't have it, and low-key panic out in public trying to find a fast wi-fi connection that will even approach the experience you have at home.

J/K, but the difference is real, including reliability.

Thinking you’re out of blueberries to put on your porridge then finding you have just enough blueberries left in the fridge to liven up your porridge.

I decided to disassemble and clean my Series X today. It’s nearly a year past warranty expiration so nothing to void. Found a video, gathered my tools, and everything went smoothly. Didn’t break any plastic tabs, didn’t lose any screws. Only issue was that I tore a corner of the back sticker while pulling it off.

Amazingly, there was very little dust inside other than on the fan blades. Thank you Coway air filter!

After reassembling I started a game to make sure it was still working, and after a couple minutes the console killed the game and told me to keep the console cool.

Forgot to plug the fan back in. Oops. At least I know the temp protection works…

With the Holdovers coming out, the candlepin bowling alley up the street from me is now in it's third movie and an episode of The Simpsons. Not really sure why, maybe because neither the interior nor exterior have changed in 50+ years.
