Random thing you love right now that doesn't deserve its own thread

In 2004, I took an optional course in Movie Scenario during my Communications studies. For the oral exam, we had to discuss the narrative structure of a movie of our own choice. I got permission to use Planescape: Torment instead, which went great. With that same professor as promotor I graduated with Half-Life 2's Ludonarrative Dissonance as topic of my master thesis.

Now 17 years later, this Immortality review reminded me of him, so I sent him an email. Within a day, I got a response: he's been using Telling Lies, an earlier game by Sam Barlow, in his course and in relation to Alain Robbe-Grillet.

I asked him not to dissuade me from the illusion I nudged him towards that path

The Mountain Goats latest album, Bleed Out, inspired by ‘80s action movies. It is everything I would want from that combination of words. I present the track listing as proof:

1. “Training Montage"
2. "Mark on You”
3. "Wage Wars Get Rich Die Handsome”
4. "Extraction Point"
5. "Bones Don't Rust"
6. "First Blood"
7. "Make You Suffer"
8. "Guys on Every Corner"
9. "Hostages"
10. "Need More Bandages”
11. "Incandescent Ruins”
12. "Bleed Out"

They should do a Bond theme.

Christian Bale’s accent in Le Mans ‘66. Tis a thing of beauty.

I actually managed to finish a crazy thing.

Someone in the Dungeon Synth Forums has been posting a series of challenges. The Autumnal Equinox challenge had the following rules:

  1. generate a random dungeon to use for inspiration (I got Forbidden Palace of the Cursed Priest)
  2. your EP must use no more than 6 instruments/patches (drums count as 1)
  3. you have 14 days, starting Midnight, September 22nd
  4. your EP must be 6 tracks
  5. your EP must be between 28 and 31 minutes long total

You can download it now! I finished the last mixing tonight.

I listened this morning - really cool!

That is very chill, I quite enjoyed it!

I just finished up Taskmaster season 13 for the third time, as you do, and what should pop up but the first episode of the new season! Whoo! That’s me sorted for the next month and a half.

The channel 4 app here in the UK (All4) does an edited version of TaskMaster with all the cursing bleeped out. It’s a godsend as mini-sorb (10 years old) loves TaskMaster and so we can watch it all together.

Another great set of contestants. I adore Fern Brady’s accent. I couldn’t place it and thought perhaps she was from somewhere in Lancashire but she’s Scottish, from West Lothian. She’s from Ireland originally, which is perhaps why I couldn’t easily place her accent. It’s likely a combination of the two.

For me it's not as immediately good as the previous series yet (with Bridget Christie) but I love all Taskmaster. I saw a very mean post on reddit complaining that it was unfair that Dara didn't have to wear the massive box on his head for the film task.

The interviews on YouTube are a joy too. John Kearns hasn't truly shone in the programme yet, but he's such a handful in the shrink-style interviews.

That’s quite funny. It’s uncanny how often the expression on Dara’s face on the front of his box seemed to be appropriate to the conversation.

I'm sorry, I don't get the reddit comment.

My mail-in ballot is going out today!

Excellent!

My wife and I voted early in-person yesterday. Our oldest mailed in his ballot from college. Our youngest just turned 18 and is excited to vote for the first time.

That's four votes for sane city council, school board, and state office candidates. If more people participated in local politics we could reverse this attack on democracy.

November 3rd is International Godzilla Day. It normally goes by uncelebrated, but this year on that day, Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla will be playing in theaters across the US. Why am I excited for a random Millennium Era Godzilla movie? It will be the first it's ever been screened in the US. Plus, it'll be the first time I"ve ever seen a traditional Godzilla movie in theaters, i.e. a man in a suit stomping on fake buildings. Tickets go on sale tomorrow in case this is up your alley.

That is actually pretty rad. I am probably a bit basic but Godzilla has always been my favorite kaiju.

I do love this but I am going to have to take my Gamera is better than Godzilla opinion over to the hot takes thread.

Mine is going out today. Took them a freaking month to get it to me.

Funny observation - I moved from a medium-sized midwest city to a small township this year. The city's ballot was always at least 2 pages, double-sided. This township's ballot didn't even use one full page. I had 4 things to vote for - Senate, Governor, Representative, State Representative.

No local representation (city council, school board), or are those elections on odd years?

They must be. I've only been here for a few months.

Something else to love - the latest Taskmaster episode.

I was excited for Dara and Sarah, but I didn't think it'd be this good.

How are you watching these? We got the Taskmaster streaming service but it's still really far behind, just about to do series 11 I think.

I don't know how NSMike is watching them but they get posted on r/panelshow. The first comment thread will have links. I've been using the password-protected DailyMotion one as it's more reliable than trying to find a Google Drive mirror that's still available.

You can also us a VPN and watch it on Channel 4's website.

That is one way to do it, and I have used that in the past. I am using another way now, although it is not that different. I don't like to spread it around, though. The more attention it gets, the more likely it is to get noticed.

I am really not into the idea of watching on Dailymotion.

I helped get a cat down from a tree. Think that counts as a real life achievement.

Was it my cat that been missing for 3 days?

Not a huge love - more like relief. I don't weigh myself very often under normal circumstances, but when I noticed a roughly 12 pound swing in the course of about a month (which is to say, a month between weighings) with no significant change to diet and activity levels, I got concerned. After worrying and mulling over what to do for a couple weeks, I started weighing myself on a daily basis. After the first weigh in, I noticed my weight seemingly had recovered a little bit.

I was on about day 5 of daily weigh ins this morning, when suddenly I was 11 pounds lighter this morning than yesterday. I double checked that I still had all my limbs because that's really the only way I could reasonably think that I had lost that much in 24 hours. At first I assumed the scale was just defective. Until I noticed that the lower edge of the scale was just barely resting on the lip of the bathroom floor rug. When I moved it to be sure it was all sitting on hard floor, there was now only about a 2.5 pound difference between yesterday and today, which is much more reasonable, and explainable. Last night I was fighting some mild anxiety, and my mouth was dry, so I was drinking a lot of water, and peeing roughly twice an hour. I probably unintentionally flushed out a bunch of water weight.

Just to confirm, I moved the scale to a similar, but more extreme position over the rug and this time it was 25 pounds too light.

With this realization that the rug may have been interfering the whole time, I feel a significant degree of relief that I am (probably) not suddenly losing a lot of weight without trying. I am going to continue daily weigh ins for at least another month, just to make sure things are generally stable.
