Random thing you love right now that doesn't deserve its own thread

Since it's on Channel 4 now, I wonder if there's any chance of a Netflix deal for new episodes like with Bake Off.

Some of the later seasons are going to start airing in the US next month but it's on The CW so it's be censored. And, if they do season 7, I'm curious how they will handle Phil's wang.

Oh yeah. Phil's wang is integral to that season.

For those unfamiliar:

They had a clip of the hula hoop task on YouTube that is suspiciously not there anymore.

There' a short horror film just added to Shudder today called HOST and i was super impressed with it. It's generally a pretty plotless "group of young women accidentally summon a demon" premise but it's (presumably) filmed post-lockdown in the UK so the entire thing plays out over zoom (the length of a free zoom call, to be exact). The technical execution of it is REALLY impressive though. The special effects work is great, and it uses some chat features (face filters, zoom backgrounds) to GREAT dramatic effect. Even the end credits are great (someone has entered all the people that worked on the film on the 'friends list/contacts' bit and just scrolls down through them. That sounds lamer than it actually works out to be.

In short, highly recommend.

In fact i recommend Shudder in general. Pretty much EVERYTHING i've watched on there since subscribing at the start of everything getting locked down has been of a quality MUCH higher than the sorts of horror movies you see on netflix or (especially) Prime.

Yeah, Shudder is wonderful. I highly recommend their documentary "Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror."

Taskmaster Series 7's first episode was added to Youtube (US) today and Phil's... tackle... was certainly on display. As was Alex's posterior in the 'quick change' challenge.

Rhod sees every task as an opportunity to mess with the hosts as much as possible.

I think series 7 is my favourite series. With the exception of the songs about Deborah in series 5, it has all of my favourite moments.

This is my favourite outtake video from Taskmaster. Not sure why they took them all out though.

I think season 5 is my favourite because it was my first season and because Mel Giedroyc was very funny.

One of my favorite Rhod Gilbert moments is from when he was on QI and tried to convince everyone that Denmark was at a high enough latitude to experience polar night:

Random thing: Flonase. I went from daily sneezing and itchy eyes due to pet and pollen allergies to basically being fine, being able to breathe in 6 months and the change was pretty quick to start. I spent a lot of years getting tortured by allergies to have such a simple, cheap, off the shelf solution.

Yeah it works really well. Is that the one that the comedown is really brutal when you stop using it?

Got a promotion and a raise. And it is Friday.

Not my experience but YMMV. I often forget if things go well and remember when I suddenly have that nose sneeze that get's ya. Oh yeah go spray.

I use with generic Zyrtek, works well in combo.

When the Flonase gets you clear for good, after a few weeks, get some distilled water and a nasal lavage kit, and you won't even need the Flonase any more. Just wash your sinuses after you go out in heavy pollen weather and you'll be good. Works wonders.

Congratulations!

I’ve just been through a review of my role that has ended with a large increase of my salary and I’ve been put on a retention bonus scheme that means if I meet my objectives for next year I’ll be getting a significantly large bonus regardless of anything else going on. I’m feeling simultaneously quite proud and guilty as the company froze the usual pay rise this year, and massively reduced the corporate bonus scheme due to COVID-19.

I had no idea that was happening and one of the main people driving it through was a guy I’d say I’d been at loggerheads with most of the last year. Turns out he’s been listening much more than I thought! Gonna have to work bloody hard for the next year, but damn me if this isn’t the first time in a very long time I’ve worked for a company that actually appreciates what I do and is pulling out some stops to keep me. I’ll be honest, it’s kinda an odd feeling!

It is, when it happens, but it also means you've gotten the respect of the leaders (who are distinct from managers and executives). It's an indicator that you're getting some job security going. Congrats!

I can not seem to stop playing Mass Effect Andromeda co-op multiplayer lately. I long ago earned every possible reward, but I just keep playing and playing.

After a move characterized by unexpected complications and many miles on the road, ms. placed bravado, bravado-dog*, and I are sitting together in our new living room.

*Maybe he needs a better pseudonym, but the way he barks at strangers while weighing in at less than 30 lbs. suggests that my handle fits him too. Possibly better than it does me, but I was using it first.

I mean, bravadog is sitting right there.

The pitcher of margarita that I just made. I make the best margaritas. That’s my unbiased opinion.

Pour some from the pitcher into a shaker with ice, shake vigorously and pour into a glass rimmed with salt. ORALE!!!!!

Nice. I finally perfected my margarita recipe this summer. Every summer for the past three years I experimented with different Tequilas, liqueurs, and even lime juice options while considering taste, cost, and ease of prep.

Unfortunately (for my wallet) I can't use any other liqueurs except Cointreau. It is simply the best for margaritas.

Yum!

And your recipe is? Don’t leave us hanging

2oz Cointreau (slightly more expensive than an average triple sec, but worth it)

3oz Altos Blanco Tequila (a very nice, reasonably priced 100% agave tequila to counter the slightly higher cost of the Cointreau)

1oz Lakewood Organic Lime Juice (That's right, bottled lime juice! Fresh limes are ideal, but I've found that it takes one whole lime on average to give up an ounce of juice. It only costs pennies extra to go bottled, plus the safety and convenience of not having to cut/juice a ton of limes.)

Fill a shaker with ice, combine, and shake until icy cold. I don't prefer a salt-rimmed glass, so that's optional. The above ingredients make a drink that's not too sweet and not too tart but has a richness that I can't quite describe.

Do you roll the limes before you juice them? Roll them hard on a tabletop until they are really soft and about to burst, then dig in with a hand juicer; you should be able to get more than an ounce out of them...

Yup, and I definitely got more juice out of larger limes. But my local store sells mesh bags with a ton of smaller limes, so I was buying those for a while.

Then last summer my wife and I were drinking a lot of lime drinks by the pool and I got fed up with cutting/juicing a ton of limes. Also, I was a little worried I might cut myself after three or four drinks, which thankfully I never did.

Lastly, I'm lazy.

/out of context theater joke

I will be in my bunk.

Oh, yeah, and the tiny ones dry out faster... I get it now. Still sounds like good margaritas, though.

Very excited by this

North American Lake Monsters is one of my favourite recent short story Collections albeit it’s very bleak. If you want an idea of the authors work wounds on Netflix is an enjoyable adaptation of one of his other stories.

Cointreau for the win. It’s more important than the tequila IMO. I personally prefer reposado tequila over silver. I think that makes it a gold margarita or maybe a Cadillac margarita. Not sure. Most recipes insist on silver, but for me reposado is a non negotiable.

Here’s the recipe:

1 part Cointreau
2 parts tequila reposado
1 part lime juice
1 part simple syrup

It’s THAT simple.

Rim a glass with salt or sugar or both or not at all. Whichever you prefer. If possible put 1 or 2 large crystal ice chunks in the glass.

Fill your shaker with ice and pour all ingredients in. Shake vigorously for several seconds. Strain into your glass. Garnish with a small slice of lime if you can. The garnish actually makes it taste better.

I almost always juice the limes myself. Choosing your limes is important. I find that the lighter the color of the lime and the thinner it’s skin will provide more and better tasting juice.

Trader Joe’s brand of reposado tequila is excellent and it won’t break the bank. The reason I prefer reposado is that it has more “tequila” flavor. To me, silver tastes like vodka.

Simple syrup is really easy to make in the microwave. 1 part sugar, 1 part water nets you about 1.5 parts syrup. Microwave it for about 3 minutes or until it just starts to boil. Stir it as best you can before and after microwaving. You need to do this in advance because you need to give the syrup time to cool down. Chilled is best.

In my experience, the simple syrup can be replaced by adding 1 or 2 tablespoons of sugar to that shaker. You will want to shake it emphatically and for a few seconds longer to make sure the sugar dissolves.

This was my first time making a whole pitcher. It took about the same amount of time as making two margaritas.

Looked at the prices on eBay this morning for the last few GBA games I want to sell, and I totally did not expect those prices to be this high, especially the original Fire Emblem...
