2012, end of the world, or end of your pile? - the 12 month thread

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (iOS) is complete! Was a lot of fun, some great dialogue, was stumped occasionally, sometimes the game is picky on what exact piece of evidence it wants in order to prove a contradiction. It does make me want to play the Wiiware ports of the other two games (I don't have a DS) in the trilogy, though reviews make it seem that the port isn't very well done.

I've added Space Marine to my 2011 game purchase list, I hear its just a fun game and a short campaign, which sounds like a good fit. I also removed Catherine because the ending was spoiled for me via the Giant Bomb GOTY 2011 Deliberations podcasts. I may watch on YouTube how the last 40% of the game goes just to see how it all plays out.

I've also added a few smaller games like Renegade Ops and Rock of Ages to my Side Goals.

I've also been plugging away on Puzzle Quest, it's probably the first game on the Kindle Fire that feels like a full fledged game and I'm really enjoying it. I also hope to dive back into Trenched to finish it off as well soon.

So I dove into Batman Arkham City via my $1 GameFly month I'm in, and so far it's been... decent.

I'm kind of at in my personal lull in gaming, and I'm not feeling the urgency to dive back into it. I'm focusing on the main story and getting that taken care of, if I can, before my month is up on the 18th. Not sure I'll make it to the HD MGS collection, but may consider purchasing it.

The main story is pretty short. Solid, but short. You can also go back and do side missions after you beat the main story, so you can always do that stuff at a later time (or not).

I started Arkham City on 1/1 and beat it last night (1/9), first game off my pile!

Yes, the main story was pretty short. First game off of my list for 2012 and it's barely the 10th of January

Games on my pile, and my comments.

 • Alan Wake & DLC - need to start DLC and to finish final 3.5 chapters on nightmare
 • Assassin's Creed - Need to start
 • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - Need to start
 • Bioshock 2 - need to finish multilplayer/start Hard playthrough
 • Beyond Good & Evil - will play and 100%
 • Borderlands - Need to finish up final DLC achievements
 • Brutal Legend - Need to finish collecting and start Brutal playthrough
 • Bulletstorm - Need to finish Anarchy achievements
 • Battlefield Bad Company 2 - only have a couple MP achievements left to 1k. Would like to do that.
 • Batman AC - have about 5 hours of work left to 1k. Need to do that, and will not be buying dlc (probably).
 • Call of Duty:MW2 - need to do veteran run through. This is a priority.
 • Child of Eden - this is very difficult for me, but I need to start working on at least finishing the game. No plan for 100% or even 80%. If I can hit 50% I will give this bastard away.
 • Crysis 2 - would like to try and boost for 100%
 • The Darkness - just have about an hour of work to finish up the SP achievements, and then about 15 for the MP. Just need to find a good boosting partner.
 • Dark Souls -- 100 hours
 • Dead Space - will finish tonight hopefully, so that is good.
 • Dead Space 2 - would like to try and 100% at some point. Low priority, but planned.
 • Dead to Rights: Retribution - plan to 100% and sell.
 • Dead Island - plan to 100% this game and all its DLC. Just love it.
 • DJ Hero - just want to finish up the "campaign" and then I am done. Low priority.
 • Dragon Age: Origins - want to 100% game, but it isn't on priority list.
 • Dragon Age 2 & DLC - want to 100% game and plan to start back on it soon. Love this game.
 • Fallout 3 GOTY PC - hopefully PC can run.
 • Fallout NV & DLC - have most of DLC purchased, but need to get back to this game.
 • Final Fantasy 13 - need to get back to work on this game. I really like it but have been easily distracted.
 • Gears of War 2 & DLC - low priority, but I would like to boost some MP.
 • Gears of War 3 - no plan to 100%, but I really would like to finish campaign on insane.
 • Ghostbusters - will 100% if it kills me:)
 • Grand Theft Auto IV & DLC - one of these days I will get back to it.
 • Halo 3 - would like to at least clean up the SP achievements (need a scored run)
 • Halo 3 ODST - would like to eventually 100%
 • Halo Reach - am ok with where I currently stand, but may do MP again at some point
 • Halo Wars - plan to go for eventual 100%. Have a boosting buddy, but scheduling is not a priority
 • Homefront - will 100% SP, and try for MP if I can find dedicated boosting partners.
 • Kinect Adventures - need to play through with Minarchist and that will get me most of my missing achievements.
 • Lego Star Wars - would just like to get to 90%
 • Lego Star Wars 3:The Clone Wars - will 100%
 • Left 4 Dead - still want to play, but not in a rush.
 • Left 4 Dead 2 - still want to play, but not in a rush.
 • Lost Colonies - need to finish campaign and boost MP. Wish I hadn't bought this.
 • Mafia 2 - plan to 100%
 • Once Upon a Monster - most of the way done already - still probably need another 5 hours of grinding. Not rushing this one as my daughter loves it.
 • Red Dead Redemption - would like to ultimately 1k retail.
 • RockSmith - plan to work continuously towards 100%. This is an amazing piece of tech.
 • Rock Band 3 & Beatles - will play whenever for fun, but am not counting this as part of the pile. They are just fun for the family.
 • Shadows of the Damned - Need to do a playthrough on hard and normal and it is 100% done. will try and do a playthrough in January and February.
 • Splinter Cell: Conviction - not sure how far I want to get in this. Am always open to boost, but it isn't a high priority
 • Too Human -- 22 hours
 • Warhammer 40k: Kill Team - would like to 100%
 • Warhammer 40k: Space Marine - would like to 100%

2012 Releases I will be purchasing - list of releases

 • Mass Effect 3 - Day 1
 • Neverdead - we will see, will likely wait for a 30-40$ price point.
 • Kingdom of Amalur - probable day 1, but will try and hold out for a sale.
 • The Last Guardian (PS3) - Will await sale pending reviews, possibly week / day 1
 • The Witcher 2 when it comes out on 360 - Day 1

2011 and Prior Releases I will be purchasing and at what price - list of releases
These are the games I will restrict myself to when the buying urge comes upon me, and for lower prices than I normally would purchase (unless digital). I will not necessarily buy all of these games. I reserve the right to purchase games not on this list if found for under 10$.

 • Driver: San Francisco (360) - $20 or less
 • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360) - $25 or less on GOTY version
 • Saint's Row the Third (360) - $20 or less
 • Bastion (XBLA) - $5 or less
 • Xmen Destiny - $15 or less
 • Catherine - $15 or less

Side Goals

 • Finish up achievements and to clean pile up before adding again to it.
 • Focus on the 360 enough to support my team for as long as we're in the GTASC
 • Not to drop below 80% completion, and hopefully build towards 85%
 • Stay the hell away from a 3DS. I want one so badly and I don't know why!
 • I will buy DLC for games that I already own and not count towards pile.

I, SallyNasty, solemnly pledge remain incredibly awesome just like I am now. Also, to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

Kirby Mass Attack is done. Fun game. Now for Zelda and another Mom kill in Isaac.

Alright, here I go:

No game purchases until I have depleted my entire game library as it stands. This not counting replays.

That is what I pledge.

Purchased: Catherine. Minarchist, you better be right.

I am home sick today and put in some time with Vanquish today and it finally clicked with me and I see how it wants me to play. I think I am going to enjoy it.

You wound me, sir. But just in case you need reaffirmation: read this.

What changed?

Funny thing: it's still $60, six months after release. Pretty much everything else has dropped in price, sometimes dramatically, but not Catherine. I finally decided it never would and ponyed up, even though I missed the sale yesterday.

Atlus games retain their value really well. Usually due to the smaller print runs and bundling stuff into the package like soundtracks.

I still need to actually read the 9 pages of chatter I missed, but I thought I should at least get the list up.

The Goal
I wrote this in the 2011 thread and I think it works as an overall goal, so I'll just copy it here.

Me, a couple weeks ago]I think my ultimate goal is to get down to a rather small list (like 5, say) of current games, and only play those games that I really enjoy, leaving more time to revisit older games, and enjoy other pursuits as well.

I actually have been focusing on "other pursuits" quite a lot of lately. It has been nice, but man does it eat into game time, hence the focus on only playing stuff I really like.

Here is the Backloggery Unfinished page, and here is the list as of now.

The Want to Finish List

Games in my collection that I want to finish, including games that haven't been touched yet. Most of these are PC, so PC unless otherwise specified

 • Alan Wake w/ The Signal DLC (360)
 • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (360)
 • Saint's Row: The Third (360)
 • Dead Nation (PSN)
 • Ms. Splosion Man (XBLA)
 • Alpha Protocol
 • Atom Zombie Smasher
 • Baldur's Gate w/ Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion
 • Baldur's Gate 2 w/ Throne of Bhaal Expansion
 • Deus Ex GOTY
 • Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition
 • Revenge of the Titans
 • Magicka
 • Majesty 2 Collection
 • Sam & Max 201: Ice Station Santa
 • Sam & Max 202: Moai Better Blues
 • Sam & Max 203: Night of the Raving Dead
 • Sam & Max 204: Chariots of the Dogs
 • Sam & Max 205: What's New, Beelzebub?
 • Sam & Max 301: The Penal Zone
 • Sam & Max 302: The Tomb of Sammun-Mak
 • Sam & Max 303: They Stole Max's Brain!
 • Sam & Max 304: Beyond the Alley of the Dolls
 • Sam & Max 305: The City That Dares Not Sleep
 • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
 • Torchlight
 • Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
 • The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

Alan Wake I don't actually own right now. I originally borrowed it from a friend, but moved and had to return it. I'll be buying / Goozexing that to play it and the DLC that monkeyboy was kind enough to gift me.

The Bubble List (8 games)

 • Europa Universalis III Chronicles - I was specifically interested in this game when I got it. I played the tutorial and was following the thread for a while. I feel like this is a game that I would enjoy if I got into it, but holy hell is learning the dang thing daunting. I'll definitely give this game its fair shake, but there is a good chance it will get dropped anyway.
 • Elven Legacy w/ Magic, Ranger, and Siege Expansions - Got in a pack with Majesty and Majesty 2 because I wanted Majesty 2. Very little prior knowledge / interest in this before getting it. I'll probably give the base game a couple hours to hook me before I wipe it from the list.
 • Majesty Gold Edition - Same pack. Played a bit of it, but will probably drop it unless someone can say why it is worthwhile to play this one rather than just play Majesty 2.
 • Half-Life - Bought this in the Half-Life Complete Pack because I wanted HL2 and the Episodes on PC. I love HL2 and this is one of those classics that I never played, so I feel like I should play it, but I've read it has pacing issues by moderns standards, and honestly, I'd kind of rather watch Freeman's Mind than actually play it.
 • Half-Life: Blue Shift - Same pack. No real interest, and from what I understand, this isn't considered a classic like the main game is.
 • Half-Life: Opposing Force - Ditto.
 • Overlord: Raising Hell (DLC) - Got in the Overlord Complete Pack with Overlord and Overlord II, both of which I have beaten on 360. I mostly picked up the pack just to have another copy. I still own both games on 360, so replays will probably be on that system anyway.
 • Tropico 3 Gold - Another one I was specifically interested in. I loved the 360 demo when it came out 2 years ago, and sims are a genre that at least used to interest me. I tried the tutorial missions and just couldn't get into it, but it might have just been my mood at the time. Going to give it another shot before I drop it.

Allowances

Other people put up "The List" of games they don't currently own that they are allowing themselves to get. I don't want to do that, since my list for last year only vaguely matched what I ended up actually buying. Monkey game himself a dollar allowance which works better I think, but doesn't match my goal either. I want to play the games I have, and at such time that I can allow myself to get a new game, I will research and get one that I think I will enjoy the most. Until then, I can play vicariously through other people (podcasts, forums, etc). To that end, I have wiped my various video game wish lists completely (Backloggery, Steam and Amazon).

So, here are the conditions under which I will allow myself to get a new game.

 • Random gifts (not likely, since the wishlists are all empty now)
 • The girlfriend buys a game
 • The girlfriend suggests a game that she would like to play together (in local co-op, or pass-the-controller "single player co-op")
 • My backlog reaches 5 unfinished games, and after that would not go higher than 10 by adding a new game.

I, Garden Ninja, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that meet the above conditions, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

So I tried out MGS 3 HD on the 360, hoping they'd fix the inverse controls (they didn't). So I'll stick with the PS2 version then, not worth my time to change / start over.

So let's see if GameFly can send me AC Revelations before my month is up. Could be a very productive time for me

Update 2:

I'm going to take the unprecedented and dangerous step of actually expanding my list a bit, as I am new to this whole pile-management metagame and feel I may have been a bit conservative. Since I have so many games that I have played, but wish to come back to, I am going to add those in as well. My goal here is really to help scratch those recurring itches I get without feeling like I should be playing something else - in other words, to help manage those titles that I abandoned, but feel that I never put enough time into in the first place. Also, rather than strike out those games I have abandoned or may continue to spend time with I will color them blue. I am free to play these more if the urge strikes. Not every game I come back to I expect to finish, either - I will play until the desire to play passes.

Now Playing:
Rock of Ages
Wing Commander 1

Currently playing games in Red.
Newly added games in Green.

I, trueheart78, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

Can I...can I make a suggestion? How about instead of quoting our entire posts every time we make an update, we just do that once a month or so? And if we want to make updates in the interim we can just use normal posts like this one. These pages are massively long and hunting for a tiny update or two in those big things is not something that many people are going to do. Just a thought.

Says the guy who started the whole thing:

Can I make a request? That maybe gets to the OP? When you guys update these big lists you're creating, please just re-post the whole thing with your edits later in the thread, instead of editing your originals. That will seriously mess with thread tracking were you to do the latter.

Okay, so let me addend that original post with a frequency guideline. Clocker.

Totally in agreement here, since I already said I was going to do this for myself.

Ok. I am cool with that

I think I might just use spoiler tags for my lists so Minarchist doesn't have to see the updates.

That's not a bad idea either...

So giant walls of white with random emoticons interspersed? That'll be weird.

Well, I'm not removing emoticons from my lists, if that's what you mean

Also, you are one demanding tyrant :p

You shall address me as "Your Eminence".

Finished Rage and put Borderlands from "let's wait and see" to abandoned. With my backlog, I shouldn't be afraid to just cut games.

Edit: Darn, due to the Irrational Interview with CliffyB and his YT dev walkthrough, Bulletstorm is suddenly looking pretty darn tempting. But I need at least 6 finished pile games in Q1 so I can allow myself to get ME3, Dishonored and D3.

Edit 2: Puzzle Agent goes down hard. Next up: Advance Wars - Dual Strike (DS). Another game that goes perfectly with the play-offs. I need to start one of the bigger RPGs soon though.

And I'm still playing Saints Row 3. I do believe I've gotten over 60 hours out of this game so far, definitely my "bang for the buck" game of the past year. Oh, and did I mention that I will be in it for probably another 10+ hours this week? Still have a ton of storyline left in my 2nd playthrough and the first mission-based DLC comes out this week.
