I, walkera, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

I further pledge to only buy a PSP Vita if it can actually be used to play one of the games already on the list above (including 2012 planned purchases, which are not allowed to include any Vita titles).

For all of you thinking they thought of and included all major 2012 releases, RockPaperShotgun has a nice write-up of those. *diabolical grin*

Grah. Forgot about Dishonoured *sigh*

My wife saw the new game informer and said that she wanted me to play the South Park RPG. Looks like that will be one more for the pile!

Although I must say, I have been making some awesome progress even with limited time over the last few weeks.

Hey, guys, I finally beat Lost in Shadow and started playing Vanquish! Aren't you all so proud of me?

In all seriousness, Lost in Shadow is a really neat game, and I recommend it to anyone with a Wii, particularly fans of arty platformers, Japanese games, and overlooked gems. (Yes, Minarchist, that means you.) More detailed impressions starting here in the catch-all, then on through the next couple comments.

I also bought the Severed DLC for Dead Space 2 because I'm a sucker for Dead Space and had MS points to burn.

So ClockworkHouse and Minarchist have discovered one of the secret shames in my pile: I have not logged significant progress in Majora's Mask.

Fellow pilers I ask thee, which game in the list should be replaced by Majora?

Also: if anyone wants to dis-enable me on the FFXIII-2 Limited Edition that might be nice. I have a feeling if I get that it's going in the 2013 list, as I haven't played XIII and currently I'd get this mostly for the art book and OST.

Torchlight. It's a charming Diablo clone, but it's about half-an-inch deep, at best, and clings so closely to Diablo's gameplay that it feels more like an HD reskin than a new game. If you've played Diablo, and since you're planning to pick up Diablo 3, you can safely take a pass on Torchlight.

I'd go for the Borderlands DLC, but mostly because I was already bored with that game by the time I hit level 25. I can't imagine putting even more time into it.

EDIT: I liked Torchlight better than Diablo.

Minarchist wrote:

I did, too, but it doesn't differentiate itself strongly enough from Diablo to really need to be played if you've already played the other. And since I have no doubt that, in true Blizzard tradition, Diablo III will have little in the way of innovation, playing Torchlight and Diablo III in the same year is redundant.

shoptroll wrote:

I've only played Diablo II and not the original (got it off ebay last year so it went in the pile for eventual consumption). So that seems like a fair choice especially with D3 on the way and I'm already thinking of waiting on TL2.

I also would like to squeeze FFX and/or FFXIII in the list somewhere. Front Mission would come off the list for one of those. Not sure what else to sub out. Any thoughts? BTW, Half-Life and BioShock absolutely cannot be removed.

Mass Effect. I hated that game.

EDIT: Forgot I updated the list once already to replace Front Mission with FFX. So I just need input on FFXIII.

ClockworkHouse wrote:

I like it enough, it was on the list for games I started but was distracted from. The save is close to the half-way point I think so I don't think it's worth kicking out.

Right now I'm leaning toward axing Need For Speed Underground 2 or Super Meat Boy. NSFU2 i have to start back at the beginning because I lost the save and between Gish and working Isaac to completion I have enough McMillen in my life for the year.

So a couple things have come up which requires tweaking The List a little bit. Namely a PS3 for Xmas from my awesome girlfriend, and failure to push on Deus Ex and Kirby Mass Attack enough to see completion before year's end (I'm 1/2 - 2/3 complete on DX I think and Mass Attack is about 3/4 done). I also realized I meant to put Final Fantasy X in the list this year and completely forgot when I assembled this at first.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

In addition, I would like to accomplish the following:
1) No Game Left Behind: Actively work towards finishing games that were previous abandoned for shinier objects in past years.
2) Cap The Pile: 2012 releases must be played and beaten upon purchase. No exceptions.
3) Cold Shower: Steam sales are to be avoided except for DLC. Humble Indie Bundle is exempt.
4) Robot Rock: Further automation of Kingdom of Loathing to minimize time spent doing banal tasks in that game.

Go for Super Meat Boy. You'd probably quit halfway through anyway, if you're like me -- I've worked on that game three or four times and have still only just completed the hospital.

Well crap. There have been 3 games I've seen today that made me interested. X-COM: Enemy Unkown, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Castle Story. But honestly, I'm feeling I'll be able to resist the lure of all of them, unless Enemy Unkown nails it.

Oh, and Shoptroll. I just finished up playing through every quest save the Crawmerax one and the underdome stuff and I would say, you can skip the DLC, since Zombie Island was the only one that I really enjoyed. The Secret Armory is a real drag and it's only pull is the Crawmerax reward of top tier guns that can only be obtained if you're near top level. It's not worth it. At level 45, I was one-shotted by Crawmerax. Robot revolution was just ok, and decently short, but still not great.

I'm mostly doing the DLC because I loved Borderlands, and thought it would be a great way to prep for the sequel. Also, I already own it so it needs to be done at some point...

So a quick tally of the games I've gotten over the last few years but have to finish brings me to... completing just over two games every week to empty the pile by the end of the year.

That's not going to happen. What's plan B?

shoptroll wrote:

I said the same thing. Zombie Island made me hopeful, and is one of the few DLC's of any game that doesn't make me want to wipe the memory off the face of the earth of the person who came up with the dlc idea. General Knoxx restored my feelings to their previous state. It takes forever to do a mission and then you have to travel forever back to the start point to turn it in, only to turn right around and go right back where you were to do the next mission. The claptrap DLC was slightly better as the travel was shorter and there were more places so you didn't go to same place 5 separate times in a row. But it still could have used quick travel points. And some enemies only take damage with headshots in both the later DLC's.

Once again, Zombie Island did a number of good things, including enemies that weren't a pain. It started you out fighting zombies just to get to the town, and then once you were established, there were a number of shortcuts, that made the lack of quick travel less of a pain. I can think of 3 shortcuts in/out of the town off the top of my head. Also, the missions were more like the base game in that you could pick up a number of them, and some would have you go to the same area, so it didn't feel as annoying going back and forth to the base town.

Get to playing, not worrying about when it gets done, but only keep playing what is fun and get rid of the rest. This should be plan A.

Having said that, and after listening to the CC this week, I'm am removing Freedom Force from my pile indefinitely as it was such a pain, I had to faq it, just to muddle through.

That's been my plan so far, but that's not what this thread's plan is! :p

Really I do well on the pile till I hit one of those games... Just Cause 2 kept me blowing things up for a couple months and then Dungeon Defenders came out and sucked up my time... Both Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 are currently sitting near the top of the pile, and I know I'll take my time with both. Enjoying every moment I'm sure.

This is why I always have a few games going at once. I put more than 50hrs into Just Cause 2, but while playing it, still managed to finish off a number of other games at a rate of 1-2 a month. I also don't play online multiplayer games much anymore since the baby was born.

Well the point of the thread is to get through things eventually, not to fire throu things.

I think the tenets of the thread should be to make sure you....

A. Play things as long as they are enjoyable to you, don't play something you aren't enjoying anymore just to finish it.
B. the key to getting through a pile is to stop adding to it. If you don't add anything you will eventually get through it

Actually, that is this thread's plan. If you are having fun with the game, then stay focused on it. If you are playing games just to get them out of the way but aren't enjoying them, you should be jettisoning them.

I usually do too. In generally I have one big game going, a couple smaller games I can take on in shorter sittings, and often a DS game as well. Still spending 70 hours in one game is a good chunk of time that could have been spent elsewhere. Not that I regret spending it on a game I enjoy so much!

Mantid wrote:

Kamakazi's right: this thread's not about clearing the pile this year but about focusing people on playing what's in their collection instead of adding things to it. It's about taking stock of what you have and what you want to play before you chase the new, shiny things. It's a support group for persistent pile-builders, more than anything.

If you look through the pages, you'll see that most of us have posted lists of the games we most want to finish this year. Those are just a small selection of our piles (my list is 16 games out of the 43 unplayed games in my collection). Rather than thinking that you need to finish your 100+ games this year, pick out a short list of what you think you could realistically play through, and most importantly want to play through, and post that.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try and finish Zombie Island and see how far I can get with the rest. I probably won't hold back on jettisoning them unless I can find a group online to blow through them. I remember reading Knoxx plays a lot better with a group or partner so we'll see.

EDIT: In general I try and have the following going at a time: 1 PC/Console game, 1 DS game, and about 2-3 iOS games. I also play Kingdom of Loathing routinely for the social/MMO fix since it's browser based and it doesn't take up too much time. Usually.

I am having somewhat the same feelings about Borderlands. It's a somewhat unique sensation: when I play it (only solo), I am engaged and having fun. Yet I have no problems turning it off - no "just one more room" like in Portal 2 or DE: HR - and when I do, I never have any urgency to get back into it as soon as possible. Maybe it's because the mechanics are fine and the art style unique, but there's no story?

That paired with the fact that I am only in the low 20s and have more than half of the game and 4 DLCs to go makes this a hard game to have looming over the rest of the pile. I have been thinking "What about game x? Nope, finish Borderlands first!" followed by not playing anything at all lately. Should I kick it to not hinder my willingness to jump into other pile games?

Maybe I am trying to hard to like it?
