2012, end of the world, or end of your pile? - the 12 month thread

Speaking of purple phallic items, how goes SR3?

I could seriously go for another replay

Yet to start it. Darksiders 2 is surprisingly engaging. SR3 is next cab off the rank though.

Late to post my August update, namely because Guild Wars 2 has made me forget about my pile...

After clearing almost my entire pile by the end of July, I found myself itching for something to play until Guild Wars 2 came out, so I ended up adding a lot of games to my pile (including the original Guild Wars trilogy, which I ultimately abandoned after playing a couple levels of it, not really what I was expecting). All-in-all, I ended up adding more games than I removed, so negative progress this month, but not by much.

So far, September has been completely dominated by Guild Wars 2, but I'll probably not play it as religiously once I finish the main storyline and hit level 80. Of course, then Borderlands 2 comes out...

Games Completed in August: Deadly Premonition, Rage (2)
Games Added in August: Rage, Mirror's Edge, Guild Wars: Prophecies, Guild Wars: Factions, Guild Wars: Nightfall, Darksiders II, Guild Wars 2. The Walking Dead: Episode 3 (8)
Games Abandoned in August: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Guild Wars: Prophecies, Guild Wars: Factions, Guild Wars: Nightfall (4)

I'm not as hardcore as some of the Total War players out there who want to beat the game with every faction. My standard is to finish at least one full campaign on hard difficulty. I used to consider "mastering" a TW game as being able to beat it on legendary difficulty, but Shogun 2's top difficulty is just painful.

I've seen very few players earn all the achievements, since some of them require you to be among the best PVPers worldwide. For example, one of the achievements is winning 200 multiplayer games, while another requires you to challenge and beat one of the game devs.

Interesting, generally I will have the most recent Total War game always installed, because a few weeks a year I will get a hankering and want to play some. So I never really consider them "beaten" until the next one comes out.

I always find it really interesting how people define "completed" in games that don't have a concrete end point.

Oh I've started a campaign for nearly every clan in Shogun 2, and have save games for England, the Turks and Prussia in Empire. I just need to set a cutoff point for pile purposes.

Rented Borderlands 2 yesterday... Forgot how much of a non-FPS fan I am anymore.

The fact that I have most of the DLC for the first one to still finish off has kept it at arms length for me too.

That and the fact that I have more games than I can poke a stick at and I'm broke

So normally people are all worried about the holidays at the end of the year, but I just want to point out the first three months of 2013.

Yeah.

Yeeeaaaahhhh....

Well......

Gotta get all those games out before new console announcements I guess

Eh. I'm probably in the minority here, but I only see 3 games on that list that really grab my fancy.

There are about 6-7 on that list I'm interested in, but they're all "unscheduled" - including 'The Last Guardian' which may not come out before 2020. I've kickstarted two that I want, and of the rest, I'll likely wait on big Steam sales.

Having a big pile has changed my priorities if nothing else. Pretty much everything in that list are skippable. There are one or two that are must plays, a bunch of games that look good and are in the "I should play those at some point" list, and a few where I'm just done with the series.

I'm with you, but even less interested in the first 3 months list. Looking at that list and my opinions, you'd think I hate fun.

Only Bioshock Infinite is something I'm really looking forward to, and after finishing 2 a few months ago, not as much despite knowing the devs are different.

EDIT: Removed list of negativity

It's also lacking anything on the 3DS or WiiU which would probably have me more interested. Most stuff on that list are either franchises I'm not interested in or installments in series that I'm quite behind on.

Right now I'm down for Ni No Kuni, BioShock:Infinite and maybe South Park. Further out, I'm already on the hook for Grim Dawn and Carmageddon among other kickstarters.

I technically feel the same (Bioshock Infinite, South Park and Aliens being the only Must Buys), but considering I got both Darksiders 2 and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron at launch in mid-August and still haven't beaten either one, three games is a lot of time consumption for me.

Of the three I would have lept at in the past (Bioshock Infinite! Dead Space 3 and Tomb Raider) I have yet to finish Bioshock 2, Dead Space 1&2, and about 3 other Tomb Raiders.

Add to the fact that I've just picked up some evening shift work, and I'm pretty much 'out' for the foreseeable future.

Not a major issue though. That's like complaining about not getting another cupcake, when you have a larder full of gateau at home.

My backlog is hopelessly mired. Now with XCOM and Mechwarrior Online coming out, I am totally lost.

PCman wrote:

In preparation for MWO (I have been playing more and more of the beta) I have been frantically clearing out the log.

I've also taken EU3, Victoria 2, and Hearts of Iron 3 off the backlog. It isn't that I don't want to play them, just experiencing a bit of Paradox overload after so many hours of CK2 and some of EU3. I don't want to start them, and not enjoy them because I have put so much time into those type of grand strategy games lately.

Finally got around to beating the final boss for the main quest in Torchlight.

Games shamefully purchased this month

  • Tales of Graces ƒ

I, Minarchist, solemnly pledge to remain incredibly awesome just like I am now. Also, to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

Downed Dirt 3, finished every single player map in HOARD and got through the mostly enjoyable Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Not bad, but it could have been better. Thankfully I'll continue to make pile progress for the rest of the year as I have no money to spend on games.

The thing hindering me most is I have now 3 free to play games that I am having fun playing. World of Tanks, Firefall, and another that's under NDA. But none of these are sucking up too much time as the last 2 aren't far enough along to warrant really digging in to, and the first is just a fun distraction that I only picked up because my next door neighbor said he was thinking of trying it out.

Hey, at least you guys finished games. I'm STILL going through Darksiders 2. Son of a bitch is long.
