I never understood why there is such a silly thing as a cockpit in a spaceship. We have so many better sensors than human eyes, and personally, I'd very much like to be shielded much more than what a pane of glass provides.

Please... this is the future! Haven't you heard of transparent aluminum?
My thinking for the fighter jet style spaceships was always that sensors can be tricked or jammed. When all else fails you've got to fall back to basics. On the larger cruiser-style ships I'm right there with you... the ever vulnerable "command deck" seemed like an odd luxury to maintain just for the view.

I like the option of having cockpits, but it's my personal choice that I always turn them off if I have the option.

I always liked using the cockpit. The performance hit you got with it in Wing Commander 3 made me very irritated. I really liked the cockpits in Wing Commander Prophecy because it was just enough to feel realistic but didn't take up much real estate.

If the cockpit provides meaningful information, sure, that's okay. Most don't, most just block out critical view space. And the hand twitching on the joystick... pass.

User defined multi-display units, those are neat. Pick and choose the data displayed, and how its displayed, that's what the cockpit/HUD should be. Again, sadly, most games don't meet that standard.

Gah. Double-post.

Got one of thems too.

As did I! Can't wait!

Announcement is here: http://robertsspaceindustries.com/st...

He's doing his own 'Kickstarter' campaign with tiered levels and rewards. 2 years until the title is released. I have never donated to a Kickstarter campaign, but I just might have to jump on this one...

Nice preview on RPS.

Oh snap! I thought from the screenshots he was showing off his new fancy CG cutscenes, but that stuff was in-engine. Niiiiiiice.

DB Error on submission. He won't take my money. Sadface.

Giddyup.

Star Citizen is the best name they could come up with?

Edit - Oh, I guess the single player part is called Squadron 42. Weird.

In for 60!
Hook me up!
Take my money!
Make me happy!
Do it now!
ARe we there yet?

I so love it when dev's pimp out the PC experience. Even if its just in text for a preview.... Nice to know someone still cares

I don't own a PC for gaming at the moment, but this game might make me actually buy one...

This looks incredible...I just wonder if it is too ambitious. And how does he prevent it from becoming Eve?

You've got a couple of years to save up for one.

If I'm not mistaken, Eve isn't really a dog-fighting style space sim, is it? If I am mistaken I'm gonna pick it up, lol.

Why would anyone do such a thing?

That $120 tier is looking mighty-sexy.

Don't get me wrong, Eve definitely has some good things about it. But in the end, it all felt like I was doing a job instead of playing a game. And it is visciously cut-throat. And yes, Eve does have PvP dog-fighting though it doesn't play out with a joystick. It's more, hell, I'm not sure how to describe it. But it definitely isn't Wing Commander-esque.

I'm having trouble understanding the different tiers.. It seems like the "Early Adopter" Ship Pledge and "Have Starship Will Travel" Ship Pledge are the same? They talk about deliveries - is there no digital-only version of this game? I don't want to have to fork out extra just because he's in the US and I'm not... and what if I don't receive it through the post?!

A lot of it sounds like Evochron.... crossed with Freelancer - which sounds awesome!

Also, i might have missed it from the video but what are the credits for? Are they purely in-game? Because in the video he's basically hinting at microtransactions but I don't think he ever came out and said it directly...

Yeah, I want to support this, but I feel very iffy about the funding structure. I'll let things sit for the time being.

With Kickstarter the Early Adopter is a slightly price reduced version of another tier but with limited slots to encourage people to jump in faster. I believe the delivery is for your green card, bronze card, whatever googah.

Eve has 3rd person, tactical ship combat. You can call it dog fighting if you like, but only in the sense that people are shooting at each other.

The currency is addressed in the FAQ at the bottom. One time fee gets you in the game for life. Micro-Transactions buy you short-cuts, but nothing that couldn't be earned spending enough time in game.

Wow, the stupid is strong in this thread.

Eve? Really?
