Welcome!

If you’ve made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.

If not, you’re still welcome!

I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.

I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.

I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.

With the power of today’s computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.

With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.

If you’ve played my games, you’ll know that’s what I love to do.

I’m here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.

I hope you’ll be as excited by it as I am.

My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.

If you register below you’ll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game’s website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It’s my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.

The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.

My name is Chris Roberts.

And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.

In, like Flynn.

Some more discussion here, though a dedicated thread is probably better.

And I have a golden ticket

Paging Brian Rubin, this is the administrator: Brian Rubin to the front desk, please!

Edit: Err, nevermind, I saw he already posted in the other thread.

Looks like the plan is to make a game that brings current hardware to its knees.

Not sure that'll be as successful as it was in the 1990s, when everything was moving so fast. We _still_ can't play Crysis at max settings.

Sweeeet

Time to dust off that leather flight jacket, it seems.

Jacket is nice, but not necessary for me. I better need a proper joystick for this one!

Do you see my avatar? I am all kinds of ready!

I've got a golden ticket!

I have a golden ticket, I have a golden ticket....

I like joysticks and all, but I really would like a system like the one Freelancer had (with joystick support, of course.)

Same here, I'm from the Troy System.

Which joystick should I use for this new game I wonder?

Make it a proper PC game and not some cruddy iOS thing and he can feel free to take all of my money.

Hmm, I noticed it wasn't personalized, so I tried to write my name on my Golden Ticket, and now I have sharpie all over my monitor.

White-out isn't helping.

Do they sell gold-out?

No doubt the session will be full of press at GDC Online, but maybe I can sneak in...

The one you get on the site when you register and confirm your e-mail is personalized, the one he sends you via e-mail isn't.

Many Wonka Bars died to bring me my ticket.

I'm hoping for this and/or controller support alongside joystick controls. But they have to have joystick control options for classic space combat.

I too have my Wonka ticket.

Done and done.

Love this. Want this. Need this.

A new privateer..... please please please please please please

How much you want to bet the word Kickstarter will be used in the annoucement.

In. The Wing Commander series are among my favorites!

I got my golden ticket!

Unfortunately the first poll is being overrun by mandatory cockpit zealots. Hello, people, options are better for everyone...

I like local vertical when I'm in space, man. That doesn't make me zealot!

I didn't read that as mandatory to have them on, just desire to have them available. It's the option I picked, I"m not playing a space FPS!

I just started a long drawn-out meandering post about my favorite memories in Privateer. TL;DNTP (too long; decided not to post) - I hope that the 'no-cockpit' option is tied to an in-game mechanic. Upgrading ship sensors into a full VR helmet for the pilot or something like that. Something that can be damaged and force the user to fall back to old fashioned sensors and screens.

Got my ticket. Man, now I need to dig my joystick out of the cabinet and make sure it still works.

I never understood why there is such a silly thing as a cockpit in a spaceship. We have so many better sensors than human eyes, and personally, I'd very much like to be shielded much more than what a pane of glass provides.

Why not have a set of screens that I can configure in whatever way I see fit? Whether be it camera views of the immediate outside, or short/long range scanners, or galaxy map visualisations. Maybe I want damage control on my main screen, rather than the blackness of space.
