Awesomenauts Catch-All of Awesomeness! Now on Steam!

Pages

A multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) originally for the PC-challenged, but it is now on Steam. I didn't know anything about it, until I learned it was free for Playstation Plus subscribers back in May. I loaded it up, and saw this:

Awesome! I'm back in the 80's and Saturday morning cartoons!

Anyway, I've played through the tutorial and a few random games, and it's quite fun. Give it a whirl!

It's currently out for PSN ($9.99), Xbox (800 points), and Steam ($9.99).

Here is a link to the Steam group.

Wait, I thought this wasn't coming out due to financial troubles with the publisher.

Is it out? Free for PS+ members? Considering how big of a fan I am of MOBA games on the PC, I'll definitely be checking this out.

I played the 360 demo with Trashie last night (he had bought it). I think it's got potential. I like the fact there are only three people per team, so it wouldn't take much to get a viable group up and running for regular play. It's a bit too slow for my tastes - speed being something Trashie drew my attention to - and in bun fights it's a bit hard to see who is hitting who. Having the screen zoom in would be useful.

I don't consider 800 MSP an impulse purchase, but I imagine it's cheap enough that GWJ people could take a punt on the game and not regret the decision. If six people decide to buy as a group and play one evening for a couple of hours, the game will have paid for itself.

Agreed with most of 1Dgaf's sentiments. All of the characters start out a bit slow but some get quite speedy with upgrades. Also, if all the characters were racing around the map like Sonic, I'd probably be complaining that things were too fast for my old man hands.

It's got some great voice-overs, refreshing art style, and a unique skill tree that allows for a lot of different builds. There's only three maps and six characters but there's promise of more to come (paid? free?).

Yup. too bad I don't have a PS+ account right now as they're giving out a ton of great content.

That's all I've got, guess I'll post the TB video:

I'm really digging the giant-garbage-robot when someone else is playing a floating-brain-guy. (I should really learn their names). Having never played MOBA games, I'm bouncing between this and SMNC and getting a nice kick from it.

If anyone wants to get a small group together on PSN, please add me.

Really solid MOBA game they made. Doesn't hurt it's free. This is now my go to before-bed game. Matches don't last too long and there's always something interesting going on, and many things to do.

Just unlocked him!

A group would be fun.

I'll add you whenever I can find my way home this evening. In fact, your PSN name looks familiar and we may have already played together :O

I've had the most success with teams of Clunker, Zoltor(?) (healing brainy robot thing), and either Leon or Lonestar. There's a level of nuance to the character builds and the actual in-game mechanics that I'm really starting to pick up on. I'm hoping it doesn't plateau any time soon.

Played my matches tonight as the robot, and damn he's a beast. Maxing his health and speed, weapon upgrades, and that bite makes him very near invincible/god-like. Unlocked the droids alien before I logged off. He hasn't impressed me in matches, but people may not be playing him well.

We need to organize a group and stomp some pubs. Sent invites to those above.

I've been ignoring the self destruct tree, just focusing on the bite and the missiles as well. The bite is extremely effective at making "squishy" characters retreat when they think they are eroding your health, bit by bit. It packs a punch that usually makes people retreat. It also is useful on drones when you are attacking a turret, I've found.

How is 4-player split-screen?

If anyone's playing on 360 I am down for some games

I'm down for some 360 multi. Handle's the same as my screen name here.

Never played a MOBA before, but I'm liking this. So far I lean toward the robot and the cowboy. Couldn't quite wrap my head around how to be effective as the floaty-brained healer guy or the stabby chameleon guy.

My favorite's the chameleon. The floating guy can be incredibly annoying in the wrong hands. I've played matches where he just hovers in one spot high up on the map and constantly carpet bombs the area below with those stupid bomb things. Super dumb tactic.

Well, despite somehow losing all my games tonight, this game is still alot of fun. I tried out random for the first few matches, but everytime I got the Chameleon, so I tired of him quickly. Seems like all the Awesomenauts have potential, its just a matter of play-style and experience.

I saw the monkey for the first time in my last match, and man does he pack a punch. His specials didn't seem be very damaging (more situational), and to counter this, not only can he levitate with his jet-pack, but his attack beam deals continues damage and can be ricocheted when upgraded. Really annoying! Can't wait to unlock him.

I played with the chameleon some more, I think I'm getting the hang of him. The key is boosting the lifesteal and damage of his blades all the way up as soon as possible and just wading into combat. He's fast enough to do a quick switch to an easier target if he runs into too much trouble, especially after you unlock camouflage. It's a really active, interesting way to play the game, I like it.

Lifesteal, eh? Good tip. I was mainly focusing on speed, modifying the blade's damage, and stealth to limited success.

I second the lifesteal for Leon. A friend is focusing on that and it allows him to damage turrets a lot more before having to fall back.

Also, I've been experimenting with Yuri (the monkey). He's tough to play, but if you have a good, aggressive team, you can really turn the tides with his healing field.

Yeah, I really like Yuri. Like that he can roll as support with the healing field, but he doesn't feel as helpless as the brain guy if he gets caught without a posse. His laser is killer when you beef it up. Actually I've tried speccing him out a couple different ways at this point and I really don't think there's a bad way to play him. His mines take a big Solar commitment to make them useful, but once you've got them maxed, if you know the level you can rain death from above with near-impunity.

Lash and Slash is definitely the way to go with Leon. Being the team "leader" with Leon or Clunk just feels so good. With a group, no one is unstoppable, but those two certainly can try.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but the sound here is very good. I especially like the character specific theme songs during loadout selection.

I just unlocked Yuri and will play with him later.

If any PS3 players would like to play with me, my usually time will be somewhere around 11:30pm EST.

This weekend, I played around with Leon's backstab ability. Puts into stealth and the first hit out of stealth plus the backstab and you can sneak up on the back of a party pretty quick. You may not do much damage (as you usually have to almost instantly retreat) but it breaks up groups as they pursue.

Fun stuff.

Arise, thread!

Took a break from Diablo III to boot this game back up.

Level 45? Huh. Guess I hit the level cap. Well, that was fun while it lasted. What's this? "Prestige?" Isn't that that thing that Call of Duty players are always yammering on about? Wonder what that does....

Wait, what? Gets rid of ALL my unlocks? Why on Earth would I want to do that? I love my unlocks!

...

Well, I really don't see myself continuing to play this game without that carrot-on-a-stick unlocking mechanic, so if I'm going to put it down anyway, I might as well do this prestige thingy and get that little icon or whatever.

All right, I'm definitely going to put it down now. Just one more game for old time's sake.

Oh, man, I forgot how weak these guys feel without my unlocks. This sucks, yeah, I'm definitely going to put this down.

After just one more game.

Wait, I don't get Leon's lifesteal blades again until WHAT level? Man, I thought that unlocked earlier. Well, I'll definitely want that unlocked when the DLC comes out, so maybe I should keep going just a liiiiiittle bit longer.

...f*ck.

*re-addicted*

I always try to get a couple games in before bed. I just hit level 40 last night, and had the best match I've played yet. My team was Clunk (myself), Voltar, and Leon. We faced another Clunk and Voltar, with Froggy. I think both teams were fairly matched, skill-wise. We made the first push for the top, playing on the wurm map, and got their turret down to 2/3 health before the cavalry came and forced us back. I can't remember the event that started it, but not long after we dropped like flies and wiped just a couple minutes into the match. A series of fortuitous circumstances let them quickly knock our turrets down to just one. Most of the middle and late game was us continuously defending the last turrent and drill. But unlike their early success, they would often attack with just two, whereas our team stuck together. With my bite snare and exploding slow, Volatr's constant heal and knockback, and Leon's overall power, we were able to feed off their failures and inhibit their advances.

At the point where we pushed their team near the mid, and wiped them, we made a push for it and were unstoppable. Not one of us died, and we were able to kill their drill in under 30 seconds. I love comebacks, and our team definitely earned it.

I didn't know prestige rolled you back. I don't know what I'll do. I wanted to get that badge for playing so much, but I love my suped-out Clunk, and don't want to go back.

Clunk's not so bad without unlocks. I never used most of his later stuff anyway: all I ever want from him is to be able to bite multiple enemies for massive lifesteal and explode without totally screwing myself over, and you can do that from the get-go. Stuff like making his regular attack into a homing missile is gravy.

Leon's the one that damn near requires unlocks to be effective: I couldn't even use him any more until I hit Lvl 13 and got his lifesteal blades back.

Really wonder what sort of timeframe they're looking at to launch the first DLC. They teased the new characters back a month ago and I haven't heard a word since. This is the sort of game that I would happily sink way too much money into if they released new characters at a regular clip a la the free-to-play MOBA model.

True enough, Clunk's still great low levels, but his higher skills make him a complete monster. When upgraded a small amount in game, I love it when two opponents think they've got the drop on lonely ole Clunk. As long as Froggy isn't involved (Clunk's bane), I like to hop over both, bite and snare the rear who's usually the weaker one, explode and slow, and usually watch them flee. Not to do with prestige, but I always get increased movement after bite. Clunk's durable, but if I can't get away from a bad situation, my momentum and my team's success decreases greatly.

I always keep movement speed in my loadout with every character, and almost always wind up buying it by the end of a match. Some need it worse than others, but they can pretty much all benefit from it.

Finally got this on 360. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm going to have to get in on some multiplayer once I've leveled up a bit. If you're interested, friend me up - gamertag is same as my GWJ handle.

I see this is out on Steam Wednesday. I hadn't heard of it until just now. There's no price though, anyone know how much it is?

Well, it's $10 on console, take that for what you will.

Very happy about the Steam announcement. I didn't play much after I prestiged, and now I'll be able to play with other goodjers.

There was a recent update with two new characters and skill tweaks. Can't wait to try that as well on PC, which I'd assume comes with the game. Hey, Aristophan, update the thread to include the Steam news. No doubt a lot of PC players passed over this, and being that it's the most fun I've ever had with a lord management game, I'd love to see the word spread.
