Meet Death, the star of Darksiders 2.

via GameInformer:

THQ hinted at the sequel to Vigil Game’s breakout hit almost immediately after the success of the first title, but we knew little about Darksiders II until now.

Fans of the first Darksiders are already familiar with Vigil’s fiction – the eternal war that rages between the forces of Heaven and Hell. With Darksiders II, Vigil looks to deliver a richer experience as players explore more dungeons, talk with a variety of NPCs, and experiment with a detailed loot system. The horseman War has been sidelined, so it’s up to his brother, Death, to travel through the world of the Abyss and attempt to restore humanity after its destruction during the Apocalypse.

It's pretty clear that we'll be getting more information about this during E3, and GameInformer will have a ten page cover story in their next issue.

As lukewarm as I was on the first game, it had a lot of potential, and I'm very interested to see what they do with the sequel. Here's hoping.

You know what's cooler than a scythe?

I share that sentiment. Interesting that the main weapon is the DLC weapon from the first (the one I used).

I actually quite enjoyed the original. Not enough that this will necessarily be an automatic day 1 purchase, but enough that I will pick it up eventually and might pick it up day 1 if it releases in a slow month.

In a perfect world the sequel will have less "where do I go/how do I get there" gameplay, but I'm sure I'll check it out regardless. I enjoyed the combat and a lot of things about Darksiders but the overall flow of the gameplay was off, hampered IMO by an often unintuitive environment, tedious traversal elements, and environmental puzzles/platforming that only seemed to cockblock getting back to the good stuff of slicing up demons.

I guess scythe matters, eh?

Man, I still need to finish the original.

You should. though the story is kind of weak, the ending is one of my favorites of this generation.

Can we all agree right now that Clockworkhouse isn't allowed to participate in this thread?

Good, with a few dumb points. I stopped at one of the dumb points near the end, but it really is worth finishing. Definitely worth picking up on the cheap if you're at all into 3rd person action-adventure stuff.

I like the design of Death, looks like Casey Jones reimagined by Todd McFarlane.

I enjoyed the hell out of the first one and the ending left me very psyched for this sequel. The main character is a surprise though. I thought we'd see the three remaining horseman in this installment. I guess they're developing two more games?

I'e wait to hear about the 4 person co-op / multi-player before I make any solid assumptions there. (although with a main character picked my initial assumption is off, so you are probably right.)

I was just enjoying the sweet irony that he started it.

Spoiler:

I've never been so pleased to have started a catch-all. No, not even the one for Duke Nukem Forever.

I'm cautiously optimistic but the first game had a lot of problems I'll need to see fixed before I buy into this one. I really do hope they pull it off though.

Two thoughts on the trailer:

  • It almost seems like the storyline for this one will run concurrently to the first. Death wouldn't need to "set out to save his brother" at the end of Darksiders because War had quite saved himself at that point. Alternatively, this game could take place during the gap between the opening of Darksiders and the bulk of the game.
  • I'm disappointed that Death's horse is black. It was odd that War's horse wasn't red in the first game, but that's not nearly as iconic an image as Death on a pale horse.

I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt for now since it's so far out, but I don't really see how any story they could make starring just Death can jive with the ending of the first Darkstalkers.

How's that? I thought the ending of Darksiders had the four horsemen coming together, but I don't see how they couldn't have side adventures leading up to that point.

Coming before the seventh seal was broken is what got War into trouble in the first place. I don't think the horsemen are allowed to just show up when they feel like it. If they could, why wouldn't they just have come help War during the course of the original Darkstalkers?

From refreshing my memory on youtube, the council set the whole thing (DS1) up, and the seventh seal was shattered in the ending, after being hidden through the game by Abaddon.

The story could also take place after the Four Horsement reunite. War beign captured by someone else and you taking the roll of Death while Pestilence and Famine are off doing something else. This keeps the story line moving forward, gets all Four Horsemen in the game, but lets you focus on Death's portion, with possible Famine and Pestilence games coming out later, or using the other two horsemen as powers, or summon type spells.

Also, the seventh seal had been semi-broken in the beginning as part of the plot to bring War in the first place. Despite it being heavily implied that the other horsemen are still locked away in whatever nether zone they come from, there's no TRUE barrier to saying they weren't off having their own adventures.

Or the 4 horsemen could just have split up to take on various tasks after the finale of the first game and then War gets in trouble. Whatever.

Citation needed, but I read that, yes, this game takes place concurrently with the first Darksiders.

I'm a little disappointed that Death looks like War with a mask and less clothes, actually. In fact, I'm hoping they don't try to make one game per horsemen, because that's one seriously long time investment to try and get into.

Nonetheless, I actually really liked the first Darksiders. It didn't have any of the crap from God of War I hated, and had enough of the Zelda stuff that I loved without being repetitive in its style. It was one of my ideal games and probably one of my favorite this generation. I was pleasantly surprised.

This game is on my "must-have" list and is one of the reasons I'm already more excited for 2012 than I had been for 2011.

Man, I know it's incredibly unlikely, but can I hope that they change up the style/gameplay of each game to match the horseman?

Maybe keep it a 3rd person view platformer, but I'd imagine Death to be a more 'stealth' character than War. Not sure where that goes with Famine and Pestilence...

I doubt it, it sounds like you want another game. I expect the core will be the same, but with alternatives to fit the role of the ranged weapons, vertical movement, etc.

Yeah, looking at the character art above, this is not death that comes quietly in the night.

I suspect his very footsteps sound like dueling electric guitars.
