GWJ Mobile Site Changes

With the changes made to the mobile version of the site we lost the ability to resize. I'm posting in case this was an unintentional side effect. To make the site usable again I'm forcing my browser to use the desktop version of the site.

Lots of mobile sites seem to do that, I've got not idea why. Surely mobile users are much more likely to want to zoom?

Since the change, I find myself missing the old code. I had dolphin sizing the fonts juuust right and though the avatars were off to the left, the posts actually fit juuuust right for me. If I had a 10" tablet it might be good. On a kindle it's not great and I can't imagine how it looks on my phone. In fact, I'll check that tonight. I almost never read gwj from my desktop any more.

P.S. How can I force the old code?

I also prefer the old code. I can't even see who started threads now.

Yeah, being able to get the old could would be nice, since it seems to go to the mobile version on any resolution lower than, I'm guessing 800px wide.

The "Link" option at the bottoms of posts are missing in the mobile version too.

3rd gen iPad, goes mobile in portrait mode. Tilt to landscape, changes to desktop mode. Definitely bigger than 800px wide either way.

Well it was just a guess. Doesn't change the fact that my laptop is stuck in mobile mode. :p

Ok. Dolphin on my phone shows what I assume is the new responsive code... zoomable, avatars above post text etc. Still seems to be overriding my font size setting so I have to rezoom every time I navigate to a new thread.

Dolphin on my kindle fire is what I assume is the desktop code. It used to be zoomable and obeyed my dolphin zoom settings. Hard to read due to size and changing zoom settings will change it for all my browsing not just here.

I actually love the new code, but it took me awhile to get used to it.

First, I dumped Opera, because the zoom function in that browser simply went away. I went back to Dolphin, and not only is the zoom function available, but it re-jiggers the forum avatars in a more palatable way. Also, it fixed the reason why I stopped using Dolphin for GWJ anyway - the reply box is no longer a finicky jerk who refuses to let me see what I type. Now it is just as good as being on my desktop.

Assuming I could maintain 160 wpm with just my thumbs, of course.

Edit: tannhausered, sorta

I don't think the 3rd gen iPad reports its true screen resolution to browsers -- it's probably acting like a 768-pixel-wide display in portrait mode, still.

Huh. My tablet goes to the new layout if I hold it portrait style too. The mobile site's look, and layout would be preferable in landscape too though.

Zoom is definitely still not functional either way though.

People with zooming issues, is this still an issue if you go into Chrome's accessibility sections and force-enable zooming?

That works on my Razr Maxx.

Some of us are still on 2.3.

Didn't know that option existed. That makes GWJ usable on my phone again.

Yeah I'm pretty sure neither of my two android devices is ever going to see 4.0, which is pretty frustrating.

2.2 on my phone and Amazon's 2.x (2.1?) Custom version of android on my fire.
