GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

There's always the chance it's not on the site, but some adware on your machine. Not shuckin the responsibility, but it might be worth checking for any.

Quite possible, I got ker-thwacked by the Spotify malware attack on my work machine last week, and I think that's where I saw it. Haven't seen it on my Mac at home, so apologies if it was a false alarm. Will let you know if I see it from home.

How hard/feasible would it be to get keyboard shortcuts similar to GMail/Google Reader?

I think what you're wanting could be done with something like Autohotkey. However, just doing "J" for down wouldn't work because you might want to, you know, type a J. Probably would work with a modifier key, though.

Lifehacker did a piece on Autohotkey awhile back.

Implementing hotkeys for next/previous page and some other navigation would be easy to do with Greasemonkey (or hosted server side). Pretty tedious however.

Auto-locking / warning when posting in old threads

I was going to ask for a "first post after the last lull in conversation" button. Does this mean that wouldn't be needed?

It would be nice to have a button to take me ~3 days before present for any given thread. A while back on the podcast the guys said "don't feel like you have to read the whole thread before you post," but all these mega-threads are still quite intimidating to newcomers. If there was an official "here's a good current starting point" button then that might help.

I think a basic karma system could be used to that end. While a thread is progressing click a little "this post is awesome" button on great posts, later on you could read through the most awesome posts of the thread to get an idea of what has been discussed.

To be fair though, I don't begrudge anyone who just dives into a long thread. Most of what is in most monster threads is cyclical, repetition or minutiae that is perfectly fine for a newcomer to the thread to look at later. Make some effort, but don't feel you need to read everything. I'm sure most prolific posters in some threads forget what was being discussed some times.

It's only if someone misses something brick-through-the-window obvious or reposts something in the last page that calling someone a skimmer is really warranted.

Still really wanting a way to easily disable spoiler tagged sections on a mobile device. An auto toggle jQuery style call that changes the css class to a non masked one would be awesome.

Oh. There's a thread for this.
I want a bigger "recent posts" link on the mobile site, if no one's asked for it yet.

Yes please. Really to the point I can't read a lot of game threads on my Android because of the spoiler tags.

A search box on the mobile site would be nice as well.

I would love someone forever if they made a stylish script that re-sized huge images. A lot of posters just throw up 2500X1600 images.

That's already been built in. Just refresh the page.

Please please please pretty please give us the ability to unsubscribe from threads.

Ditto for that on my IPad.

Hate to whine like the whiny crybaby I am, but yesterday I dropped from "Consultant" to "Office Linebacker" for some reason. Could someone look into that?

That's not a bug, it's a promotion!

It must be an iOS/android difference then because still tiny here after multiple refreshing.
edit: oh, unless you were talking about the huge size images thing. In which case, it's your fault for not snipping the quote

Linebackers are more important than Consultants.

Coulda sworn I was a Linebacker before...

I blame terrorists.

God help us, yes.

I'd be all about this if I had any idea how to subscribe to a thread in the first place. That could just be me being dense though.

Just post to a thread and it automatically subscribes you. It shows up on the User Account->Track tab. You have to be logged into the site.

Which wouldn't be so bad except that eventually your entire first page of your tracking tab is full of never ending threads you have long since lost interest in.

One thing I always look for on this forum is a "report a post" link, especially on spammer posts. Bunch of them hitting tonight for instance.

So feature poor, this forum.

Happy Dave,
You're not... sorry. I had looked into Tapatalk when you first posted it and I thought I had replied already, but obviously I didn't!

That module actually looks pretty interesting and fairly comprehensive. Only issues with it are that it's still in development and being written for Drupal 6, where we're running Drupal 5. I definitely think it could be backported, but it'd take quite a bit of effort. If we get a truly mobile-friendly version of the site up and running, would that cover most of what you're looking for out of Tapatalk? Or, does it have additional functionality I'm not familiar with? e.g. off-line reading and reply queuing, etc.

Heh, no worries. If we had a true mobile stylesheet (not just the simplified 90's one we have now) then that would probably get it 90% of the way there. Tapatalk is an iPhone only paid app, but it has a really good, simple interface, remembers your place in threads, and let's you easily mark things as read. No offline/queuing functionality as far as I'm aware, but it's seriously slick.

There's an android and I also think a Blackberry version too.

As a new Windows Phone user, I thought I would also mention that WP7 also does Tapatalk. I bought it for another forum I frequent, and it really does make reading and posting on a small screen 100% easier. So put me in the list of folks that would really love to see Tapatalk come to GWJ.

The Amazon search widget on the left is being really slow in loading tonight, and the whole page hangs until it does.

+1

I also find the mobile website a bit annoying on my Android Tablet, but the real site is a bit too small. I would add my appreciation to Tapatalk, it is a great app I use on both may Android phone and tablet.
