GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

Thoughts?

I have been having this issue too just on my iPad3 since ios7. It's fairly annoying and I have not been able to find any solution. If I tap in the blank space enough times I can hear the clip play sometimes.

I'm having the same issue as well.

They work for me on Chrome. I haven't tried Safari.

Haven't gotten to try it yet, but YouTube allows HTML5 video embedding via an iframe, which is also the only way Vimeo allows embedding.

Switching from Flash to that may fix the problems with video on iOS. I don't have anything to test it with, though.

I have the same issue in Chrome, just blank space where embedded YouTube videos should be on my iPad3.

Any chance we could get Nintendo Network and 3DS codes added to the system info page on user profiles?

Nintendo Network could easily replace Wii U, actually, and if you wanted to do the fancy auto-link thing like the PS3 info does, it could link to http://miiverse.nintendo.net/users/[... Network ID].

This.

I'm sure this is out there already, but it would be neat to be able to search on the mobile site without having to pop open another tab/page and using "site:gamerswithjobs.com". I have no idea how hard that is or if it's coming or why I'm old already or what "magotes" is all about or games or how the world has come to this it wh

Okay, I'm done testing. (I was editing this comment to check to be sure, and told people to ignore it until I was done.)

Notag seems to be broken. This is what I put below, using curly braces instead of square brackets:

{notag}Instead of {list} tags, use {list=1} tags.{/list}{/list}{/notag}

[notag]Instead of

[/notag]

Here's some improvements for spoiler blocks that I already have in place on my custom CSS that I think would be appreciated by all:

avoid wasted space by limiting the height of large blocks (example: Vector's RPGmaker problem) until the user chooses to show the block:

.bb-spoiler blockquote { max-height: 25em; overflow: hidden; }

hide images (and emoticons):

.bb-spoiler img { opacity: 0; }

Nice, hiding images will be a welcome update.

Applying that same logic to be able to hide long quotes would rock too!

I was wondering if it would be worth the hassle;
could all links pointing out of gwj be recoded automatically so they're opened as new tab/window?
could this be a feature that could be turned on and off in our own personal settings?

Middle mouse click? That's what I use when I see a link outside of the forum, even for specific thread.

I can understand you might want a way to tell it's an outside link tho, I would add my voice to your.

Indicators on links to the outside world would be nice... but frankly, I'd vote even for an enhancement to links within GWJ, to give some indicator of which thread a link points to -- the node number isn't really all that helpful, but maybe a hover text with the node's title? It's not a huge problem, but it's annoying to click a link and have the server suddenly lose track of what my last-read post was within that thread.

Hmmm, this is only based on my observations, but..I don't think it works that way to begin with. In other words, as soon as you go to a thread, no matter which page, your last-read post becomes the newest post until you set the last read post or someone posts something even newer than your last visit. I've had that happen where I click on a link to take me to a thread (like the start of the thread), but without using the "new" link, then I click on the "new" link and that tag within the page simply doesn't exist anymore and it can only take me to the top of the page.
When I hit the back button, Firefox is smart enough to put the scroll bar where it used to be, but that's about it. It'll sometimes take me back to the top of the page when I use the Back command, even if I go to a page with "#new", seemingly dependent on whether the browser is using the cached page or not.

What I'd like is if the "last read" status only updated when you actually accessed a page that was newer than your last read. As RolandofGilead mentions the problem is that accessing any page in a thread resets your "last read" status to the final post in the entire thread - even if you're scrolling back through the history and not getting anywhere near the end.

Yes, that's exactly what I was saying... clicking a link into anywhere in a thread loses what my previously last-read post was (i.e. sets it to the actual most recent post in the thread).

I think that actually would work pretty well to combat this issue... please forgive the bastardized pseudocode below:

onPageLoad() {
// assumes "posts" are a simple incremental number starting with 0 within each thread.
set $myLastReadPost = max($myLastReadPost, lastPost($currentPage));
}

So if you open page 74 of 75, it would set your "last read" post to the final post on page 74 -- a subsequent click on the "new" link would bring you to the first post on page 75.

Edit: changed min() to max() due to insufficient caffeination at the time of original post.

So I ran across the old "can't post a URL with () in it" again today. Realized there had to be a way around it, like links with spaces having %20 in them... and of course there is.

Use %28 for ( and %29 for ) and you can properly post URLs with parentheses in them.

A fun little bug: This post by Malor in the build-a-pc thread can't be quoted, with the javascript console complaining about an invalid Unicode character escape sequence.

I'm visiting the site a lot using tablet and phone. It's a long press away, but it would still be somewhat convenient.

Should just be as simple as adding 'target="_blank"' to the anchor tag generation.

Noticed an odd behavior around Spoiler tags. Seems like they cause a page to load a lot more slowly, and the link to reveal the Spoiler takes quite a while to appear. This seems consistent across platforms, in both Firefox and Chrome, and mobile devices.

Hey all, just wanted to +1 a couple of suggestions. I read the last 6 or so pages, so apologies if this has been mentioned:

1. Omnipherous' suggestion to repeat the Inbox/Favorite links at the bottom of the page, or, at the very least, a "Top of Page" link.

2. Hobbes2099's suggestion to have links open in a new tab. I know about middle mouse, but occasionally forget.

3. It would be nice to have functionality within quotes to jump back to the original quoted post. I know that UBB has this, it's a link in the top.

Thanks, and thanks for all of your work with the site!

I'll speak against forcing links to open in a new tab/window by default. I strongly prefer to have my own control over where/how links open.
I really like the idea to have links to other GWJ threads have the target thread's title appear as alt text. That would help me understand if it's a thread I'd get to on my own eventually or if it's something new I haven't been tracking, without screwing up the "last read" marker in threads I frequent.

That's a fair point. Perhaps a setting? (I don't know how possible that is...)

Yeah I can do my own middle clicking, or long press if on my phone/tablet.

I do like the quote link suggestion though, if that's possible.

POWER TIP: Firefox will apply exactly this behavior if you have your GWJ tab pinned. (Right click on the tab, "Pin Tab") Chrome might too, but you'll have to find out for yourself.

The Home button on your keyboard is a quick ticket to the top of the page.

Not on a tablet it isn't.
