GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

The [ img=WxH ] tags is a good point. If you have a testing instance of GWJ set up, I think the fix you'll want to test is:
.comment .content .bb-image {max-width: 100%; height: auto;}

Yeah, didn't do it this weekend again. But I'll get around to it. Real Soon. And yeah, that's what I had been figuring on. The one case it doesn't support (which is supported right now) is changing the aspect ratio using the WxH bit. But I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that intentionally on here.

I need to see replies to my boldly wrong 2012 predictions!!!

Not sure if this has been mentioned already - I fully admit to being worse than a skimmer (a non-thread-reader).

But I'm always slightly annoyed that the "My favourite topics" link at the top left doesn't go to your user account version of the favourite page - the one with View / Edit / Favorites / Track as tabs along the top.

Can we either have the tabs along the top of gamerswithjobs.com/favorites, or then have that link point to gamerswithjobs.com/user/number/favorites instead?

Agreeing with Floomi gets you all hot and bothered? Everyone's got something, I suppose.

Also, can we get some sort of account option to hide embedded images by default? So it turns them into a toggle or a link or something.

It feels dirty. And he's ashamed to admit that he likes it.

I want to be able to see a user's tag (i.e. the text below their forum name) on their profile page.

I realize this is pretty edge-case but hopefully it wouldn't be that hard and it would help me with Employee Profiles.

+1 There are some that have great conversations going in them and not being able to favorite them either makes me just use the old way for all of my threads or bounce back and forth.

I've been adding front page articles to my favorites by creating the link myself.

Take the # at the end of the article URL (e.g. 110986 from http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/1...)
Add that to the favorite adding URL http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/favori...
To end up with http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/favori... and ta-da it's now a favorite.

Though, if the ability were added to the site, it would make this much easier

Furtivespy is hacking the website. Fire him!

Is that what took the site down at lunch? :p

WITCHCRAFT

So how is that YouTube button coming along?

People don't type their own tags?

I submitted the change a week or so before Thanksgiving, and last I heard, doogiemac was going to try and review it and roll it out the week of December 7th. Haven't heard anything since.

I wrote it to be like the other buttons, but I'm thinking I should have it check for a full URL and convert that to the proper tags, or alter the backend code to have it not care if it's just the video code or a full URL. Also should probably handle youtu.be-style links.

Quick note (didn't read to see if it was already reported) but the favorite topics from time to time will report the wrong number of new topics in the header. Right now I am seeing 1 new topic, but there are two when I click on it.

Requesting a UI nicety: could any URL thats a link to a foreign site have a graphic next to it indicating it's an external link, and also, when you click the link, open in a separate tab?

When you click the link, open in a separate tab?

Pretty sure you can set this up on your own machine...

A webpage can specify whether a link should be opened in the same window or in a new window. Usually what you're setting in a browser is how you'd like it to handle those new window requests: with a new window or with a new tab.

Links on GWJ are currently set to always open in the same window (that's the default behavior for links). It could be set up to have all off-site links open in a new window by default, with the user's browser determining whether that becomes a new window or a new tab.

You mean, like with the middle mouse button?

I always click links with middle mouse button unless I know I'm done with the current page.

Or Ctrl+Click. Ctrl+Shift+Click to make it the active tab.

A big problem with changing the behavior to make all links "open in new window" automatically is that while browsers have a "open in new window/tab" button (middle click, ctrl-click, command-click), they do not have an "open in same window/tab" button.

Hence, if the behavior changes, readers no longer have a choice. Whereas with the current behavior, readers can choose which option they want on a per-link basis.

Short form: Websites that open links in a new window/tab for me fill me with hatred. That would be a bad change.

Or just write a Greasemonkey script to make all links on GWJ pages have a "target" attribute of "_blank".

Pressing the "Recent posts" link will open Recent posts.
And scroll page down to the very bottom.

To recreate:
- go to Recent Posts
- scroll down
- click on any recent post
- click back on recent posts.

page should (correctly) go to Recent Posts but (annoyingly) to the end of the page.

Maybe it's time to think about promoting yourselves out of VM-land, and running on real hardware? It's 10PM, and the site is slow as molasses in January.

Yeah, it's gotta be an issue with the VM sharing physical hardware with other VMs that are chewing up resources. Looking at the system charts, when you posted that message we were running at 40% CPU for 5 min avg (very low -- we typically peak at 120-140% during very busy times). I'm posting a support ticket to Linode about it. In the past, they've explicitly moved us to different physical hardware in order to more evenly distribute the load (as opposed to letting the management tools do that for them).

Yeah, if you're burning that kind of processor and, likely, I/O power, it's probably time to move to real hardware.

GWJ is growing up.

Suggestion: Collapse-able elements in posts, such as images and particularly quotes, or more specifically images within quotes and nested quote pyramids that turn a page into a long page with repeated content that could start out as collapsed. It would make things much easier to read and follow.
