The Big Board-Gaming Catch-All

I forgot to mention I almost played Wingspan but we had someone come late to game night and we were max out so I forfeit my spot. I was tired anyways but just being taught the game got me excited. I’m sure another opportunity will come up soon.

I unsealed my game last night, mixing in the base with the big white box expansion. I watched a quick video so I know that during gameplay, you drawn the green adventure cards until they are gone for a particular number, then draw the gold ones. Some early questions:

1) If I have several green cards, potentially with some expansion cards, of the same number, do I shuffle them together so the draw on them is random?

2) The expansion has some whitish numbered adventure cards. Where do they go in relation to the green and gold cards of the same number?

3) Some numbers didn't have cards. I'm not referring to the higher numbered ones, there were some in the lower number section that didn't have representative cards for a number - unless I mixed them up somehow. I noticed at least 2 where I didn't have cards of that number, and there were even dividers with that number. Hell, I'll go check to see which ones those were, BRB... Ok, memory was a little off. One of them was a lower number - "109". There is a 109 divider but no 109 card. The other was a higher number, 450. There's a 450 divider, but no 450 card. No 449 card, either, but this one isn't too odd since it's such a high number.

4) Mike - you mentioned EZ-Mode cards from the expansion that you added in. Were there adventure cards from the expansion that I shouldn't have added in, yet?

Admittedly, I haven't read the rules or setup or anything, yet, so these are probably basic questions answered in the book/expansion rules. It's more fun to talk about it, though, right?

This is the video I watched:

Spoiler:

Are there any others you would recommend watching before reading the rules and playing?

Just got the shipping notice on my 7th Continent expansion.

How is 7th Continent for guest players? Some friends of ours have it and I'm interested in playing a little with them but I dont know if suggesting that makes any sense. Its ok because we have Gloomhaven we can all play (even though 4 players drags the game to a terrible crawl.)

1) If I have several green cards, potentially with some expansion cards, of the same number, do I shuffle them together so the draw on them is random?

If you have multiple green cards with the same number, you should select one at random.

2) The expansion has some whitish numbered adventure cards. Where do they go in relation to the green and gold cards of the same number?

The white cards go in front of the green cards. The order should be white > green > gold.

3) Some numbers didn't have cards. There base game comes with dividers for some cards that are included in the expansions. If you didn't get all of the expansions there may be some unused dividers. The full card list is here if you want to see if you are missing anything.

There are three different ways to make the game easier. There is card 777 from the base box, there is card 888 which is "Immortal mode" in the white box, and there are a set of Prodigy cards in the white box which are blue action deck cards which make the game quite a bit easier. The Prodigy cards have some bold text at the top of the cards that tells you what they are.

There are rules for people dropping in or dropping out of the game. It is probably more fun to start from the beginning if possible, though. I'd recommend just starting a curse at the beginning and doing a short one like the Crystal's Song.

I have a game storage/easy setup question. Obviously there is an impressive number of companies who will sell inserts for any major game, but they seem to frequently become obsolete thanks to a new expansion hitting. I've also tried my hand at foamcore and while the results were satisfactory, the time spent was much greater than I'd prefer.

I seem to be arriving at the idea of using un-beautiful but readily available stuff to organize my games, like Plano boxes.

My question for today is this: Does anyone make generic playing card shoes that fit sleeved cards? One of the nicest parts of many inserts is that the storage chambers can be brought directly to the table and will keep everything organized there, as well.

Edit: Before anyone can say "Google that your damn self", I have, and Broken Token sells card holders that might do the trick. They look perfect for holding the cards during play, but maybe not perfect for storing. Still, might grab some.

Thanks!

We started tonight and played for a short while. Enjoyable so far.

Yeah, that's them all. So far I am very happy with them all - already had my game rescued once! And I am mostly concerned with figuring out the puzzle rather than proving my skill against the game.

Kit and I picked up Fabled Fruits and the expansion while we were in San Diego at the end of April. We finally played it tonight - just the base game, no Limes.

It's a keeper. It's fast, not too thinky, and will fit on our camper's table just fine. We played 3 games and they were all close, which I like for us.

Holy crap, I got my 7th Continent expansion and... is the "Replacement Cards" box replacing every single card in the base game?

Yes! It is basically the whole game minus some dice and figs.

Ya, I guess some of the cards were miscolored so they weren’t matching? I love the support but this is way excessive. I couldn’t tell but I don’t think I was actively looking for it.

I guess it's for the goodwill. There were a lot of very angry people on kickstarter and bgg.

But I haven't noticed any problems either, until I organised all the expansion cards. While shuffling I felt some of the exploration cards were smaller. I can't imagine that will affect the game at all.

This is why I would never publish a game. The customer expectations are just so high.

On UK trade/chat page I've seen folk giving their old cards away for nowt, some people selling them on for up to £40... so others can make their own DIY copy of the game.

Looking for a recommendation for a gift - a co-op, at least 4 player for a family with two kids under 10. No zombies, no "horror" (which in this context is broad enough to include games like Mysterium), and currently available.

Burgle Bros. But then my answer to any board game question is usually "Burgle Bros."

To be honest, it's always a good answer.

Any of:

Forbidden Island
Forbidden Desert
Forbidden Skies

would also be good.

Flash Point: Fire Rescue is excellent, unless the fire-fighting theme is too problematic. Victims can technically be "lost" to fire.

Forbidden Island - Yup
Forbidden Desert - Yup
Flash Point: Fire Rescue - Yup

Is Mechs vs. Minions still available? Programmable movement, so a little thinky, but if you play for fun and not worry as much about winning, it can be fun for younger folks.

There's a superheroes co-op game a friend of mine used to play with his 10 and 8 year old. Think it was Sentinels of the Multiverse?

Sentinels is very hit and miss. Some love it, some hate it.

Yup. https://merch.riotgames.com/en_US/collection/board-games/. Agreed that it's a lot of fun if you don't take it too seriously.

Last night was our first gaming session since my mates all went to UK Games Expo, which meant we played a couple of new games.

Villainous - fun game, like the asymmetrical game play and just has a nice amount of player interaction that doesn't descend into take that the game.

Home on the Larange - sci fi game, where you build a station and add modules to it to score points. Lovely art work and also there is a big book of stories based on the station you build. Anyway it ended up in a tie between me and another player and we couldn't find the tie breaker. So we messaged the designers of the game via facebook (they are atucally pretty local to us), they got back to us pretty much straight away, saying they know they forgot to include a tie breaker in the rules, and then told us what it was. Thought that was pretty great customer service.

That's... weird, but OK. I guess... props to them for replacing everything?

In my case, since it's just me and two others playing, I'm not going to bother with reorganizing everything. If someone spills beer all over some cards I'll replace them, until then we'll just deal with what we have. Thanks.

Epic quest begun: I've just primed all the minis from Hellboy, now 100% committed to actually paint them all.

Im currently working through painting up Gotham City Chronicles.

So far 20 of the henchmen are done, so only 178 to go

Hoping to knock out 8 more that are already mostly painted tonight.

This is the rough and ready standard the Henchmen are getting so I can whip through them quick-ish and get onto the Marquis figures.
