The Big Board-Gaming Catch-All

well it doesn't make sense for me to sell it off in pieces, which is what complicates things since I don't think the guys that were interested are going to want to drop 4-500 on the whole thing.

yet selling off just the base game and 2-3 other things leaves me with a lot I can't use anymore.

I think you would be surprised at how many of the expansions you could sell off individually. And if you waited for the rest of it to sell before you got rid of the base. You might have a nice little influx of cash. I suggest doing a geekbay auction of your expansions on BGG. Just my 2 cents.

I think it's hardier sell the whole thing then just splitting everything. I recently sold 31 ships and (and starter stuff) for only $200 over Ebay. I bet if I sold my ships individually I would get way more, but the time would have been too big for me. I love that game, there are just too many other games that are better. It's a good problem to have.

On a funny note I did keep the X-Wing player mat. It's a massive mouse pad and it works amazing for computer table.

Damn. I'm not big into the game but would have loved all those ships.

Does the app for Descent run the Overlord for you in the base game? That's all I have and my friend who was going to run the base game for us as Overlord got ROFLStomped by us and I don't think he wants to Overlord any more. We like co-ops so would like to play the game in a pure co-op mode.

Nope. It's got one new free campaign in the app, but the base games campaigns are not in it. I'm hoping to get started on the app campaign this weekend with the family.

Thanks for the info.

So they've hit a snag for really stupid reasons on iOS, but if you're an android person, the 2nd edition of Vlaada Chvatil's Through The Ages is now an app! And it's really good! I bought it when it came out two days ago and have lost many, many hours to it already. It makes a wonderful but frankly very fiddly game into something that you can go cry into a corner about because the medium AI whipped you by like 80 points!

Seriously though, if you like civ-style games or Vlaada games or TTA at all, this is a fantastic way to spend $10. I've fallen in love. It's a game whose physical edition I own but can almost never find people to play. I'll take the AI players any day.

From the 'things I love' thread...

So, I bought the Arkham Horror board game a few years back (mainly because of the lovely art) and bounced right off of it and pretty much haven't taken it out of its box since.

BUT...

I just bought Eldrich Horror which arrived over the weekend (still love that art!) and basically spent the last two days playing solo games to figure out the rules. My legs are absolutely killing me this morning from sitting on the floor all day yesterday. Whatever magic streamlining they did between the original and this version works absolute gangbusters on me this time around! Right now I'm resisting the urge to play another game so that I can actually get some homework done instead (I'll beat that damned Azathoth yet!)

Now I just have to persuade some other people to play it with me! But I'll be honest - i think I'll probably be able to get my moneys worth out of it playing solo anyway!

We played another, very exciting, Seafall game last night. Lots of milestones done, and high scoring. I would guess we've got 2-4 more games (just five milestones left on the board right now).

Another game tomorrow night, then we have to take a break for five plus weeks (one player is out of town for a month or so).

If you do find people to play with, just be aware that the location decks tend to run out in vanilla with more people which makes the game feel like it has less meat on the bones than it should. However, the first expansion, Forsaken Lore, addresses this handily by throwing a bunch more cards into the mix.

Such a fun game, I'm always pleased to see other people talking about it.

I've already ordered one of the expansions (Mountains of Madness - just because it's my favourite Lovecraft story) but I fully intend to grab them all as soon as I can!

So far though the repetition hasn't bothered me as much as I thought it would. And for the moment I've just been pacing myself and sticking with Azathoth so that I can experience some different cards / mechanics blind with some other players rather than just burning through all the content solo.

It's got it's tendrils hooked into me bad! I've played it again twice since making the above post :O

* in fact, screw it. Just ordered Forsaken Lore as well. Who needs school books anyway!

So played two games of Seafall over the weekend. I know I've been highly critical of this game (and still am) but they both ended up being enjoyable. Here is the correlation but not necessary the causation: we didn't achieve a single milestone in either of those games. There are two people sniping each other and stealing colonies, another exploring, and me doing my thing.

What was my thing? Well towards the end of the second game someone decided to do some research; I said that is fine but there are no cards in the draw deck. I have every research card in the deck

Played some games this weekend. Had a smaller section of my usual group so I took the chance of testing my boardgame Dicescrapers and played a game of Quantum. I really like Quantum quite a bit as the ships are modular so you can reconfigure them on the fly which creates a sea of options on how to win.

Dicescrapers is coming along quite nicely and I'm pretty close to nailing down the core rules and the layout of the board. After that I need to play a million games with the extra special powers and make sure they are balanced.

Also played a solo game of Arkham Horror the card game and I am really digging it quite a bit. It was a bit fiddly to get into as the information you need is spread out over 6-8 different cards that you need to collate in your mind on the best way to proceed, but the theme and tension is lovely. Really looking forward to playing more of it.

I love Eldritch!

I still haven't gotten a play in since I got Dreamlands+Cities in Ruin, maybe I should set-up a solo game for myself.

that's the biggest issue though, set-up can be very lengthy.. especially as you get more and more expansions. I'm at the point where it takes me about an hour to set-up all the decks.

oh, also, card trays like this are a huge boon to combat table sprawl.

If you need more stuff to buy (obviously :p ) I think Arkham Horror Card Game is probably even better than Eldritch Horror. Eldritch Horror is fun, but the events on the cards rarely have much to do with your current scenario in particular; Arkham Horror Card Game improves on this by having unique scenarios with their own sets of cards.

I've been eyeing that too But one game at a time!

That might be going on my xmas list to Santa though...

Played two games of Rebellion recently with the new Rise of the Empire expansion. So far, I'm really digging it. There are 4 new leaders per side, 4 new types of units per side (2 ground, 2 space), new missions that partially replace the core game deck, and changes to the way combat works. The new leaders are interesting and can let you roll the new green dice during mission attempts. I also like that there are ways to recruit leaders through missions and action cards, instead of just automatically during the first few turns. There is a limit of 8 leaders in your pool and now it's possible to hit that limit and have to decide which leaders to keep. I also like that which leaders you get is highly variable in each game, and that can play into the missions or action cards you get.

The new units are okay, adding the green dice in addition to red/black promotes variety in your forces, which makes the new units more attractive. However, in two games I have yet to see the Imperial player build either an Interdictor or a shield generator. The combat changes are generally nice as well - using the new tactic cards is way better than the old way, but it also feels like you have to use the damage tokens more which makes it feel more fiddly.

I had thought adding in the Rogue One elements would feel weird, but they did it in a way that still feels very true to the original trilogy scope of the game.

Also had the chance last week to play both Star Trek: Ascendancy and the new version of Conan. I had heard lots of good things about Ascendancy, but it seemed kind of scarce among my friends and I'd never had the chance to try it until now. It's really good, I guess maybe the 3-player focus and hefty price tag have hampered it a bit. I played the Federation, the other guys were the Cardassians and the Ferengi, which are two new expansion factions. The Federation basically wants to explore and stay out of combat, the Cardassians want to go heavy military. The Ferengi want to expand everywhere and be friends with everyone, and are probably better suited to a 4-player game. Still, it was a lot of fun and feels VERY Star Trek. I'd pick this up if it weren't so expensive (and long - our game took almost 4 hours). Conan was okay - I get the praise over it but it still didn't feel all that different from other minis/skirmish games. I do like that the different scenarios are well designed and VERY different. Don't know how well that translates into replay value.

Quantum is one of my favorite games. I always enjoy when it hits the table.

That's an interesting state to be in. I think I've done research myself two or three times, and I've stolen a couple of cards I've wanted.

We're in a state where I need to break up some cards from the other players so they can't end the games quickly. That is slightly annoying, and with a 3 player game it makes this situation more problematic than if we were in a game with more players. Either way, we're going to try and finish this game off completely at the end of the week.

$68 on Amazon right now.

As mentioned in the What Are You Playing This Weekend thread, I played Star Wars: Armada this weekend. It wasn't just Armada though, not 1v1 with the starter set. It was a 3v3 game with, the game-and-boxes-of-ships owner and teacher suggested, 400 pt fleets. So apparently there are different kinds of Star Destroyer, and each kind has a different subkind... My team assembled what I recognized from the movies, and three hours later we lost by the value of one TIE Fighter squadron.

It was fine. It was also like learning how to build a radio and write a final exam at the same time. Firing on another ship is like a ten-step process, which is partly why each turn took half an hour. Our sides were a little too big for a learning game too. What really grabbed my imagination though was an idea for Fleets of Glory. FFG has got a lot of mileage off the Wings of Glory formula, so I think it's only fair that Ares Games should rip off FFG in turn. Imagine a game of Pacific War capital ships—big pre-painted battleships, destroyers, carriers, etc—with teeny tiny squadrons of Corsairs and Avengers, Zeros and Kates. Strip all away the cruft of Armada, use WoG's cards and damage counters, and put some of the chrome in the optional rules. I'm sure Armada's content is candy to knowledgeable SW fans, but most of it flew over my head like a Greeble II-class Vectrex monitor. But make that Pacific game...

I would be all over that game Gravey. I'm a sucker for anything naval combat. On that note, anyone want to recommend their favorite ship based game?

Not helping.

Now think of this style/scenarios played with a batman theme. Personally I think it will REALLY improve it. They are going to KS early 2018 from the last news I heard. Problem is its going to be pricey.

Have you played Sails of Glory? It's a lot like the WWII flying game or X-Wing, but the game really shines when you throw on all of the optional rules that make it tilt on too complicated. At the minimum, you'll have your ships and a sail level. You'll pick movement templates for 2 turns from now, and depending on how the wind hits your ship, you'll move differently (usually just faster/slower). You have cannons on either side of your ship, and with more advanced rules, you can load different kinds of shot into them. When you think you have a shot, you'll order a broadside and depending on how well you lined up your firing side with your opponent, they will pull a different number of damage chits. As your ship takes damage from the numbers on the chits, it loses some efficacy. With the complicated rules, you can do things like set fires, break masts, inflict crew damage, or cause water to flood in. It's pretty glorious.

+1. Sails of Glory is my favourite ship-based game, but then it's my only ship-based game. But the formula works, and like Atras says, it packs a lot of simulation into a relatively simple system.

I'm hoping to finish this game off soon and move to other things. The last games were more enjoyable because we're all doing stupid stuff, like get all the research cards, raiding each other and trying to build late campaign colonies instead of advancing the story.

I just read a great review in 'Armchair General' on a card game called, 'Panzer Orders'. It seem's it just ordered thru the designers site in England. Does anyone know if this is distributed in the US, and by who?

Thanks

So this was a Kickstarter. I doubt they have any distribution deal. Board Game Geek doesn't have a whole lot on it either.
