I posted in Love thread since I couldn't find this one.
Press release-ish thing: EA Access is coming to Steam
?!
Well. This might explain why all those EA Origin digital codes were on deep discount on Amazon back at the end of April (e.g. Titanfall 2 for $3; Star Wars Battlefront 2 for $7.50).
I wonder if they'll do anything to make Origin purchases available through Steam.
I also wonder whether Origin as a storefront/library will eventually just disappear.
I don't know about that - I could see them doing something similar to Ubi - where you can buy through steam, but you still have to sign in to Origin to play.
Of course, that could be tested right now by anybody who wants to buy one of those games.
Every time I use the Steam Beta client all I can see if how much better GoG Galaxy's system for creating game lists/filters is. Why block you from making a custom list of all your games?
Here's what I mean. This is Steam's "Dynamic Collections". If you're using the Collection view, there's not a way to just, well, view ALL games. You have to switch back from/disable collection view. Which is stupid. Why not just let me flip between both without having to use a toggle box that I always forget the location of? (It's under games, then uncheck "group by collection". But I always check the wrong place initially.)
GoG Galaxy's Bookmarks/Lists thing is way more flexible. It can be filtered however you like. You can first create an All Games list. Then let's say, filter out Steam. Then Single Player. Etc. Way more elegant. I have one for all my Steam games, one for all my GoG games, one for just games that are currently installed, etc. And it updates live. It's fantastic because if I want to create a list that's a subset of something I've already created, it's way easier this way.
Want to create a new list of your 5-star rated games that are currently installed? Click the Installed list. Choose the 5-star rating filter. Then bookmark it, it'll automatically be added as a new list. Brilliant.
With Steam, you're editing the filters of each list and modifying them. If I did the above in Steam I'd no longer have a vanilla "installed" list because it would now be something like only my installed single-player games. And unlike GoG it wouldn't have any sort of intelligent naming to indicate the change.
Steam can "Snapshot" a collection, which creates a non-dynamic list of the current games in a collection. Again, a bit of an inferior system. Why create the extra steps and clutter?
You can also resize the artwork or change the view type of your games in the collections/lists. Another pretty basic feature Steam seems to lack.
I know those items seem small, but they also seem like stupid things to drop the ball on.
GoG Galaxy doesn't have any wine/emulation type stuff and no remote play features, but those are the only reasons I even use the Steam client. Whenever possible I launch stuff through Galaxy, even if it's a Steam purchase. Unfortunately, despite it being one of the most popular requests, no Linux client for GoG.
Some strange byproduct of the Origin games returning to steam? I just got four trading cards for Mirror‘s Edge out of nowhere. I played it probably 4-5 years ago?
That happens when they add cards to a game that didn't have them before.
I see EA Play is on Steam now.
And I already own pretty much all the games I want to play, so, um. Oh well.
Same prices as the pc xbox gamepass. Not a bad deal but seems like less games comparatively. So nice for people that don't already own these games.
I hope that we don't get the great game streaming war.
Have you played streamed games?
I hope we DO get the great streaming war. Zero load times, zero installs, zero update downloads, painless video capture, play anywhere on any screen... Consoles can't die fast enough for me.
I am not sure my internet is up for actual streaming of games but I did just try the xbox pc pass this month and while fun I do also want to have some level of ownership on the games I like.
With any luck, if the great streaming war breaks out, internet providers will get off their asses and start providing internet.
Plus Starlink is coming...
Steam Digital Tabletop Fest: Oct 21 - 26
Not exactly consisting of video adaptations of board games, but there might be some interesting things to check out in there. Not "just" sales, either - there's a schedule of events, like streams with game devs, etc.
What download speeds do people typically get from Steam? Im on a 1Gb connection and my speed tops out at around 16MB/s. My Xbox the next room over meanwhile is cruising at 10x that.
Is it me or Steam?
I'm on a 100/100 Mb/s connection, and I generally get right around that from Steam. My most recent download shows 12.7MB/s.
That's about right for you, 12 * 8 being 96
Yup, agreed. Your question prompted me to look up my current ISP plan, though, because I could've sworn I was on 150/150. And now I see I'm eligible for upgrade to 400/400 (for less than I'm paying now) - so I might have a new data point for you soon.
Mine tops out ~ 11MB/s.
Speedtest.net pegs my connection at ~100Mb/s so that checks out
Of course, my ISP advertises my service at much higher speeds than that.
When I had gigabit internet last year Steam was reliably downloading at around 40-50MB/s.
Download I just ran peaked out at 26.2. I (supposedly) have Gigabit. But I'm on WiFi also.
Alright, I've converted to gigabit with Verizon FIOS; Speedtest shows me at about 800/500 though. I just downloaded something from Steam and got an early peak of 53.8MB/s (430.4Mb/s), but it was averaging about 33MB/s (264Mb/s) for most of it.
Steam continues to give me download speeds of around 40-50MB/s on gigabit internet.
As a counterpoint, I just redeemed Epic's free giveaway of Star Wars Battlefront 2 and initiated a download from Origin, and this is what I got:
In all fairness, is there anyone amongst us who hasn't considered trying to move to that glorious land?

I have never considered trying to move here, no. That would be weird. But Gabe is welcome to stay.
He kind of looks like a cult leader now.
Ha, I love this line:
"It’s as if there’s a new element that’s been discovered called Not-Stupidium, and New Zealand is one of the world’s producers of it."
I'll tell ya, if I worked for Valve, I'd apply for the transfer.
He recently donated $286K (not sure if USD or NZD, though I assume NZD - EDIT: confirmed it was NZD) to an Auckland children's hospital, too!

Aussies?
(Generally there tends to be net migration to here from NZ, which prompted one former NZ prime minister to quip that New Zealanders moving to Australia increased the average IQ of both countries.)
He kind of looks like a cult leader now.
Isn't he? Given the way a lot of Gamers feel about Valve?

You can't fool us. Aussies have a well-documented obsession with the lands of Hobbits and Elves.
